Totally irrelevant to tonight’s meeting, but interesting just the same...

On this day, Arthur Philip was entering Sydney Heads from Botany Bay (which was considered unsuitable for a settlement, - he had landed there on the 18th Jan, 1788). Eleven Ships, Seven hundred convicts and two hundred soldiers and a few ‘free settlers’ (80+) made up the First Fleet. They even had 6 rabbits! He landed and started the whole ‘settling’ or ‘invasion’ thing on the 26th!

So do we celebrate or sympathise?

Social. Marion Walton is getting together a group for the Merry Widow (she has further details) and also for Music in the park. The latter is each Sunday night in the Geelong Botanic Gardens. Marion is aiming for a group night on Sunday Feb 5th. (Great nights with a picnic and drink. Music isn’t bad either!)

Bowls. Gerry is organising teams for social bowls at Lonsdale on each Monday in February. There are already several expressed interest. So get on board for a roll and a feed.

Conference 2013. Gary has a theme and wording. Negotiating a colour with DGE Helen for what we will wear to the 2012 conference in Warrnambool.

Ocean Grove Community Picnic. Richard Grimmett advised that the Ocean Grove Community Picnic, hosted by the Ocean Grove Community Enterprise (noting the presence of board member Helen Butteriss at the meeting), managed by Rotary, will be held on Sunday April 15th at Ocean Grove Park. Organising committee will be made up of members from each group. Trevor McArdle and Gordon King offered to help.

Our DGE Helen has returned from her ‘education’ program in the USofA. She is full of the truth and wisdom that was shared with over 1200 DGE’s from around the world. Helen will give us a more detailed account in the near future.

Chris gave an excellent presentation in two parts.

An update and a bit of history of the OG Surf Club. It started just after WW2, and except for a short recess it has been continuous since. It now boasts a membership of over 800 and 150 active lifesaving members. The Club also can boast a proud history of competition, winning numerous state titles and competing strongly nationally.
The other part of Chris’ presentation was about his role as a program producer for television. This was fascinating and it is intriguing to get an insight into what goes into a ‘show’. 150 : 1 was a ratio of minutes of filming to minutes of actual show. Traveling the world to film and to canvas buyers and performers, etc was only part of an incredible juggling act involved in putting a show together. So now we all have to watch “The Great Race -Australia’ to see what talent we have in our own community. Chris is clearly a great organiser and someone we ought to be targeting for Rotary.

Report of the Meeting of 17^th January, 2012 .

Guests were Laurie Fagen, PP Maroopna Rotary, PHF.

Also a guest of Dick Clay, Maureen Renton, formerly from the land in the Echuca region, recently widowed and new to Barwon Heads. A warm welcome to Maureen.

And Rotary Youth Leadership representatives Nyasha (member Bayside Rotary and RYLA Leader) and Allen (member Rotaract based at Deakin) who spoke of their experience with RYLA, at Kangaroobie, near Port Cambell. The program develops youth in leadership and self esteem. The Youth Committee still looking for possible candidates for RYLA 2012 in April. As Allen indicated, young people aged between 18 to 25 who would benefit from a week of learning leadership skills and some time for self reflection would be suitable. Not just those already showing leadership potential.

Noel Emselle urges members to bring partners and friends to next week's meeting as Chris Paterson will be an interesting speaker. He is current President of the Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club, with a background in producing and will give an address titled, exploits with the moving image.
Art Show. Coral will give a presentation to the board. Noel Emselle has joined the committee.
Car Raffle. Gary Golding reports that the car raffle has raised $10,400 to date with further sales expected at the caravan park at Point Lonsdale on Australia Day (5:30pm followed by a BBQ) and at the next market on Feb 5th
Conference. Sponsorship is developing. A presentation is being prepared for the Warrnambool Conference. T-shirts, caps and even possibly lip-stick will aid the promotion of our conference.
We have a vacant room for the conference at Warrnambool this year. If anyone has now decided to attend, please see Rod Greer with a $50 deposit.
Annual Community Bowls at Point Lonsdale Bowling Club. See Gerry. Beginning Monday night, 8th Feb for four weeks.

Report of the Meeting of 11th January, 2012 .

The meeting was held at the home of Gordon King and Marian Coppins. The weather was not really clement but that did dampen the feeling of welcome we received in this very large garden with all sorts of promise for the future. As usual the food was provided by Bellarine Catering and was enjoyed by all. Thankyou, Gordon and Marian.

Meeting December 20^th, 2011.

Art show final presentation.

Ian Downing introduced the committee and thanked them for their hard work and energy without which the excellent results from our fist venture into the Art Show world would not have been achieved.

The Sponsors, who were our guests at this meeting were also recognized. These generous people were; Phil Edwards, Bill Steains, John Wynne, Peter Williams, Peter Malloy (R.T.Edgar), Bunny Carrigan (Carrad Solutions), and Geoff Eglin (Paxton Press).

A cheque for $4,303.92 was presented to each of the chosen recipients.

- Disabled Surfers Association (Julie and Mark Besana)

- Rainbow Riders (Ricky Runsfeldt).

- Cottage by the Sea Ian Featherstone).

Reports and Rotary Interest.

- Club Grove membership renewals are falling due in the next few weeks. Fill in the information and give it and the money to Secy Vic.

- The Gordon Institute Scholarship Program for the Catering Course has one applicant,

- Marion Walton reported that the Ocean Grove Primary School have many books for DIK. They will be collected and stored until the end of January.

- Anne Hodgkinson requested sponsorship for one student to attend the VCE Summer School at Melbourne University. She also reported that the visit of the two Thai students was very successful. Their hosts were also thanked.

- Market. As this falls on New Years Day this year James Ricchini suggests we and the stall holders dress to fit the day. Faggs Mitre 10 have donated a further five $150.00 vouchers for the market raffle prize.

- Peter Cullen attended the presentation of the awards to students from Oberon High in memory of Annette Cullen.

- It was suggested that DGE Helen Trigg might appreciate some encouraging emails while she is in Anaheim USA doing the DG training.

- Ambulance Monitor upgrade has been concluded. Of the $14,000.00 needed, $3000.00 came from the Community Enterprise Fund, $2500.00 from Ambulance Victoria and $8500.00 from OG Rotary Club.

The fines session at this meeting was a reverse – members of the Club who had done good deeds were recognized and their informer s were fined. This was a good way to end off the year.

Report of Raffle Ticket selling at the Caravan Parks. There were 171 books sold, so the time given so generously by most of the members and some partners was well spent. The evening was as usual capped off with a BBQ at the Calnins. Many thanks to Nan and John for once again hosting this evening.

The Meeting of December 13^th.

Induction: President Margaret presented Graeme Chamberlain to the Club as our newest member, and introduced his wife Sandy. They have four children, John, Luke, Tim and Stephanie. Graeme was previously a member of R.I. Nathalia Club for 11 years. His classification is Caravan Park Manager. He will join the Youth/New generations Committee.

Guests: Two students from Thailand, Miki and Anne who have been at the Eaglehawk Club this year were introduced. They were hosted by the Fletts,Greers and Campbells for their week at the seaside. Each student was presented with a gift from the Club.

Bree Anne Chamley was also welcomed. She was the face of the Multiple Sclerosis Society at the Mega Swim.

Reports: Shirley Dodgshun is rehabilitating in the Mackellar Centre after suffering a stroke. The sincere good wishes for a successful recovery are extended to her from the Club.

- Norm Elliot was welcomed back. He says he is O.K.

- Phil Edwards is also progressing well after some surgery.

- A Certificate of Appreciation from Barwon Health was received for our donation to Bronte's Ball.

- There have been lots of letters of appreciation about the Christmas Dinner from the Senior Citizens.

- There has also been a Certificate of Appreciation from the Multiple Sclerosis Society for our effort of $21,000.00 + From the Mega Swim. The organizing group, the participants and their supporters should feel very proud of their efforts!

- Raffle (Car).. Noel Emselle needs sellers for 30/12/11. Please see Noel.

- Lookout Reserve. Noel also needs a volunteer to check on the upkeep for the Friday nights in January. Please see Noel for details.

Entertainment: Bree Anne Chamley played and sang several of her excellent items from her CD. She wrote the songs herself and their composition showed considerable skill. The CD is for sale at $25.00. See Trevor McArdle.

The Meeting of December 6th

Presentations

V.C.E. support awards presentation

- Zac Kingsbury, (Year 11 and 12) was presented with his award. His very competent acceptance speech demonstrated that he would make good use of the scholarship. He also indicated how grateful and delighted he was to have the award as it would allow him to reach some of his ambitions. He was accompanied by his Mother and a friend.

Reports:

Senior Citizens Dinner.

- Seventy one Senior Citizens joined us for Christmas Dinner which everyone appeared to enjoy. Members of the Club were not required to wait on the tables this year so we sat with our guests and learned a little about them. I found my neighbour had a most interesting and surprising life.

-Entertainment was provided by Wilma Andrews who was accompanied by Lean Badenhop. Fred Andrews joined Wilma for a romantic duet!

-Anne Rose, the widow of Roy Rose was a special guest. Awards in his name are still given to selected students at the Bellarine Secondary College.

January Market- Market manager James has asked the stall holders and Rotarians to don some fancy dress or national costume for a celebration of New Years Day and a bit of fun. Is there a prize… watch this space.

Rotary Interest : I don't know if this is the right means or vehicle to express my thanks to you all for your support, constant encouragement and kindness during my long months of hospitalization and rehabilitation. The recording of each meeting was a wonderful way to keep me in the real world and to provide some normality as well as many laughs. I feel very priviledged to belong to our club and humble that you showed so much care and ongoing concern for me.

Pride of Workmanship Awards. (Part 3)

Chris Dixon. Chris has grown up in Ocean Grove and had completed his apprenticeship at ‘Lofty’s’ Garage in Wallington Rd. Chris has owned and operated Ocean Grove Sercie Centre for the last 11 years. In asking President Margaret to present a Pride of Workmanship Award to Chris, Gordon King highlighted Chris’ quality of service, friendly manner and how highly regarded Chris is in the local community. In accepting the award Chris was quite proud and humble to receive it and also stressed that what he did was his business, but what Rotary did was voluntary.

VCE Support Awards presentations

Megan King (Year 12). Megan was away at ‘schoolies’ week after completing her VCE. However, Megan had prepared a report which her mother presented on Megan’s behalf. In it Megan highlighted the fact that the scholarship was able to fund books, uniform and to finish her VCE. She hopes to get into an Arts degree or do Primary Teaching.
Stephanie Van Rekum Ayres (Year 11 to 12). Stephanie had a well prepared speech and delivered it with a great deal of self assurance. In it Stephanie also pointed out the value of the scholarship and the fact that without it VCE would be financially very challenging. Stephanie has already completed Year 12 Drama which involved a 40 minute performance, as well as a 7 minute solo (she developed the character Modesty Blaise from cartoon origins). She clearly showed the benefit of her studies. On the table I was on there was unanimous agreement that our funds had been exceptionally well allocated.
Zac Kingsburg. Hopefully we can get Zac to a dinner early in the new year.

Reports

Health and recovery. Welcome back to Ian Downing and Bill Walton. Norm Elliott is having a time in hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery. No doubt a hospital stay will not fit into Norm’s program!
Secretary Vic reminded us all that the Christmas Dinner is a partner’s night. You are booked in as a double and need to apologise if you or your partner are unable to attend. Please do so as early as possible.
Alison needs help to shift some furniture at home. Martin, Alex and one other have volunteered their services Thursday am.
Raffle Ticket Selling. Please watch the roster and put your name down for a time. There are plenty of options.
Market. This Sunday Dec 4th. There are some gaps remaining in the car parking roster. Please see Colin if you have time.
Seniors Dinner Dec 6th. Drivers required. Please contact Marion and Bill. Rotarians will not be required to serve the meals, but are asked to sit with our guests and ensure they are well looked after and have a good time.
Megaswim. Trevor reported that we are still receiving funds and to date we have passed $20,000! Needless to say we will probably do it again next year!
Medical information Booklets. It was agreed to purchase these and present them to our guests at the Seniors’ Dinner next week. (Ed...I thought the Board made the decisions!)
Geelong Community Enterprises. We have received a $1,000 sponsorship for the market. These sums of money come from Bendigo Bank. We thank them.
ART SHOW REPORT. Art Show Chairman Ian Downing presented to President Marg the final report for the inaugural Art Show. Ian congratulated the committee for their incredible ‘Service Above Self’ and the club members who all contributed to the Art Show’s success. Between sponsorship, sales and programs, approximately $17,000 was raised. The new committee will be chaired by Coral Barker and her team will include, Tony Haines, Marg Campbell, Martin Geerings, Rod Bush, and Ian Bent. The Club was asked if it would support continuing the Show next year. The strong consensus was, yes. Coral and her team will present a recommendation to Board in the near future.

Rotary Interest.

Our attendance figures for July, August and September of meetings are 63%, 63%, and 65%. Although this is not spectacular, the raffle, Art Show and MegaSwim along with organising the Senior’s Dinner and the Conference 2012 make for a very active club. Well done to everyone.

Important notice to members. Membership Nomination

The Club has received a nomination for membership on behalf of Graeme Chamberlain.

Graeme has been a member of the Nathalia Rotary Club (PP, PHF and was inducted into Rotary in 1991). Graeme and his wife, Sandie, have now moved to Ocean Grove. Currently, he is taking up a role as manager of the Pt Lonsdale Caravan Park. In Nathalia he owned and operated the local hardware store and before that was involved in trucking. He has visited our club on a number of occasions in the past.

If anyone has any objections to Graeme becoming a member then they are requested to put their objections in writing to the secretary within seven days.

Part 2 of Pride of Workmanship Awards.

Tony Haines spoke to the commendation for Constable Justin Joseph on behalf of the Vocational Service Committee. Justin is a respected member of the police force stationed in Ocean Grove. He has been the Youth Community Liaison Officer for 3 years and in that role has been involved on a weekly basis with youth and has organised an annual ‘Challenge Camp’ for ‘challenged youth’. His work has been invaluable in helping to break down barriers between challenged youth and their community.

Congratulations Justin. A worthy recipient.

Reports

Carols by Candlelight. The local committee is looking for people to sell candles and glow sticks at this year’s carols in the park on Dec 11th. Check your diaries and be ready to volunteer.

Vocational: Gordon Scholarship is still in progress and visits will be made to local schools in the next week.

International: A truck load of goods (thanks to John Wynn’s truck) have been delivered to DIK from St Peter’s Church and a couple of houses.

Youth: VCE awards(Bellarine Secondary College) next week. New student for 2012/13 is Zac Kingsley. The current students and new student will be our guests next week.

Thai students visit in December. We will be hosting 2 students for the week of saturday Dec 10th and returned Friday 16th. Host families have been arranged, but if anyone would like to participate then please see Ann.

VCE Summer school has seen some interest from St Ignatius College students.

Community: Seniors Dinner is progressing and to date there have been 48 acceptances to date. Members won’t be serving meals this year but are asked to sit among the guests and make sure they have a good time!!

Megaswim: This was very successful with over 2/3 of the club being involved. To date commitments and money received has amounted to over $16,000. There were 108 entries and 6 teams. Already there is considerable talk of teams for next year.

The surf club swam the furthest and were presented with the trophy.

Two individuals raised over $1,000 each, and Team Rotary collected $600.

Thank you and congratulations to all who helped in this inaugural event. We learnt a lot and frankly I thought we did a pretty good job, considering how little we knew of what to expect. Great leadership Trevor!

Sargeant John eased several dollars from reluctant pockets. Of interest was that Billy Steains is moving his boat out of the Queenscliffe Marina to a bigger moorings - his own lake!

Organ Donation

Mary Elliott, who is the chair of District 9780 Organ Donor Committee (and does a brilliant, tireless job in the role) introduced Tony Allan to tell his story as a heart recipient. Tony suffered cardiac myopathy and was given 6 months to live when the heart of an 18 year old became available. Tony, has managed to survive for 18 years and is living an active life, provided he is careful of his medication and activity levels (golf, cricket umpiring). A great story.

Mary then outlined some of the facts relating to organ donation and the importance of registering, even if we are an older demographic. The example set to family and community by being a donor is as important as the organs that may become available.

In expressing our appreciation for the excellent presentation Coral Barker summed up the Organ Donor program as follows:

“It is a program washed in tears. Tears of sadness for the loved one lost, and tears of joy in the hopes of a future.”

PS. It was fantastic to see the number of members who are organ donors. This is in no small part due to the persistent work of Peter Hawthorne.

It talks about the one cause (polio eradication) having many benefits well beyond the eradication of this terrible affliction. Please go to the effort to read the article and find out what these numbers mean; 125 to 4; 1000 to 3; 20 million; 2.5billion, etc.

They all reflect the efforts of Rotary International and its many members over many years.

Reports

Board (Nov 8th.)

An award for Maths Endeavour will be presented annually to a student at Oberon High School in memory of Annette Cullen. Annette worked for many years at the school with students who experienced learning difficulties. The award will be presented annually for 5 years at $200 pa. This year the award recipient is Melissa Westhorpe.
Ambulance Heart Monitor upgrade. Originally this project was to raise funds for two monitors. However, it was decided after consultation with the local ambulance that one would be the aim. ( A second monitor would only be held in reserve and may be relocated thus not necessarily serving the local community, which was a primary aim of the project.)

This project has now been finalised with funds from the following sources:

Ocean Grove Community Enterprise $3,000

Ocean Grove Ambulance Auxiliary $2,500

Ocean Grove Rotary Club $8,775 (including 3 winter markets and the balance from the Charities account)

Wetlands Project. Noel Emselle has distributed information on this proposal and we all should read it and give it some thought. It is a good idea and would give the club a new venture to add to the Lookout Reserve.

Riding For the Disabled has invited us to their Christmas function on 25 Nov from 11.00 to 1.00pm. Can anyone go? Let Secretary Vic know.
RC of Geelong are advertising sale of hams and turkeys.
Youth New Generations. Hosting families required for the visiting Thai students from Dec 10 - 16. See Ann is you can help. Ann is also looking for candidates for RYLA (18 -25) and RYPEN (15-16) in Mt Gambier next year April.

Art Show Evaluations. Get these in to Tony Haines asap, please.
Megaswim this weekend. Have you volunteered? See Trevor. He will have a wonderful opportunity for you to be involved in this exciting new venture. If you don’t have a job, just come and support the swimmers and the cause - MS. At this stage we have 6 teams but may get as many as 8.
Neighbourbour House Golf Day. Thanks to Tony, Wal and Vic for doing the BBQ. Congratulations to John Calnin for again putting together this excellent day. 96 players participated and helped raise $4,250 for the Neighbourhood House.
Auction of leftover wine and beer from the Art Show raised $250.
Car Raffle. Progress is slow at this stage and there is plenty of opportunity for more to volunteer to do a shift. See Noel to take part in this great fund raiser for the club.

Sergeant Rod. As usual he lightened all our pockets, including the Lions. While congratulations were in order for Foxy reaching 80, the fine on Foxy for a ‘detailed’ report at the last week was cutting! Have you no compassion Rod B? As for a debate between some of our ‘wordier’ members I shudder to think of the topic or the time involved. Besides it may be difficult to narrow the teams to just 6.

A grizzle from Greer. Members (males invariably), please note that our club contains 52 members of whom 9 are women. To continually refer to ‘guys, fellows, fellas, etc is not appropriate! The women of our Club are deserving of equal regard. A more appropriate reference is simply ‘Rotarians’..............

Guest Speaker

Leanne Jones, Marketing Manager Searoad Ferries.

MV Queenscliff relaunched.

Leanne addressed us on the change in the ferries between Queenscliff and Sorrento. The route, which first began carrying vehicles in 1987 has now seen the return of a refurbished MV Queenscliff. Leanne outlined many changes that her company, Searoad Ferries, have had to deal with as they remain competitive in today’s market. In particular, she pointed out that no longer was it ‘just a ferry trip’ but increasingly the journey has become part of a ‘tourism experience’. Consequently, the newly refurbished ferry is doing much more to give a more enjoyable tourist experience, including a cafe, ‘High tea on the high seas’, interpretative material, advertising and ‘infotainment’ about the two peninsulas as well as children’s entertainment.

Polio Plus: Clubs have committed to and fulfilled their obligation to the Gates Challenge. Polio Plus has the project of the Jenny Trenery (DG Brian’s wife).
Educational Programs: Peace and Ambassadorial scholars. We had an Ambassadorial Scholar recently.
Group Study Exchange: Our team has just completed their
exchange in Iceland which provided cultural and vocational opportunities for young business and professional people that fostered goodwill and friendships.
District Simplified Grants: for local projects in many forms.
Matching Grants: providing many projects in conjunction with
clubs from other countries.

Presentations

Barwon Heads 13th Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

PP Noel Emselle presented, on our behalf, a Surf Rescue Board to Peter and Malcolm Bell from the Barwon Heads 13th Beach SLSC. Peter is the current president and Michael is a life member.

The rescue board has been purchased from a $1300 donation from our Rotary Club last year. It will be an integral part of their rescue equipment for the next 5 years , and will be particularly valuable for assisting in mass rescues. After its ‘working life’ span has elapsed the board will then become an important training aid for a further 5 years.

(We are also into our 3rd year of a 5 year commitment to the Ocean Grove SLSC)

Pride of Workmanship Awards.

These awards are presented annually by our club (and many other Rotary Clubs) to people who demonstrate extra initiative in their workplace and who clearly demonstrate the Rotary ethos of ‘Service Above Self’. This year we made three awards.

Ruth Davies. Ruth works with the ANZ Bank and has demonstrated considerable skills and helpfulness to managing banking affairs for customers. In receiving the award Ruth thanked the club for recognizing her efforts and those of the bank to provide high quality customer service.

Chris Dixon from RACV Ocean Grove Automotive Centre . Any members who have had their vehicle serviced or used the services of the RACV locally will be well aware of Chris’ thorough approach to all aspects of his business.

Justin Joseph. Justin is a local police officer who works with some of our more ‘troubled’ youths in addition to his normal policing duties. He was on camp with some of these youths this week.

Unfortunately, both Chris and Justin were unable to attend our meeting to receive their awards.

Thank you to the committee of Tony Haines, Geoff Chandler and Gordon King for their work in researching and finalizing the awardees.

Reports

Training for Apple Mac’s. This took place at Gordon Kings and Marion Coppins home on Wednesday and was attended by several members interested in improving their skills or exploring the possibilities of improving their technology awareness. Thanks to Rod Bush for running the session.

(Anyone who has used Rod’s skills in Apple technology will join me in saying they are second to none. Nothing is too difficult or too complicated....) An App legend!

Secretary. Thank you from Polio Eradication for our support in successfully petitioning the Federal Government to donate $50m to polio eradication.
Torquay Rotary is seeking support to have RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment) accepted as a structured program of RI. By a show of hands we gave our club support.
Community. Bill has issued invitations for the Seniors Christmas Dinner (Dec 6th). Two replies were received within 24hours!
Youth. RYPEN. Be on the lookout for potential candidates from 15 17 yr olds. It is on April13 -15, 2012. VCE students award recipients will be our guests November 29th. Ann is looking for a couple of volunteers to take on some of the Youth tasks. See her update that will come via email.
Car Raffle. John Fox explained how we would be selling tickets this year and that we have 750 books to sell. Jan 3rd will be the caravan park selling and all books need to be back before then. There will also be available several pieces of Rotary promotional material for each selling time.

Tickets, table, chairs and promotional material are to be collected and returned to John Fox’s home.

Noel informed us that there are still a number of spots available on the rosters. Please find time to be available for a couple of selling times.

40 Books have been sold already.

Art Show. This proved to be an excellent event for the club. Ian Downing thanked the committee (Coral Barker, Tony Haines, Dick Clay, Marg Campbell) for their incredible efforts. It proved to be most successful and came in very close to budget. A full financial report will be available later in November, but a profit of close to $18,000 from the various sources appears likely. Over 800 visitors attended. Tony Haines has emailed all members with a survey sheet on the Art show and all members should, as a matter of importance, complete and return it to Tony as soon as possible.
MS Megaswim. This is taking shape and Trevor is still looking for roster volunteers, especially for the late night shifts. Please give it a go. MS is a crippling disease and its research needs our support. The swim is being held November 19th and 20th.
Market report. 450 vehicles. Over $1000 in stallholders fees and $840 raised through the gate for Riding for Disabled. Several new stalls helped add colour and interest to the market. Thanks to the team for organizing rosters. Surround yourself with excellent people and things usually work smoothly.
Fund Raising. SuperSprint are looking for our support for two events. One is an Otway’s Ride over the District Conference weekend of 23rd 24th March 2012. If there are any volunteers not already committed that weekend, see John Eyles. The other is more achievable. It is the Portarlington Triathlon on the 18th March, 2012. We will be supporting it.
Relay for Life. Martin Geerings gave a ‘plug’ for this event to be held this weekend. If you would like to support it through the CFA then he and other CFA members would be grateful of your donations.
CFA Open Day. Sunday 20th November. The local CFA is holding their open day. You are all invited (after you have finished your rostered duties the Megaswim of course).
AGM November 22nd.
Thank You Martin. Thanks to Martin Geerings for doing the Bulletin for the last three weeks. I appreciate it. (We had a great time in WA. Even managed a bit of a trip up to Geraldton. Wildflowers, history and geography always make for a good trip!)

Community Service Project: Rotary Club of Bayside.

They are looking for some involvement by other Rotary Clubs for their "Buz activities for Kids by Kids" program. Enriching the lives of young students from the Northern Bay College . Secretary Vic will enlighten us further at the next meeting.

Art Show: From the mouth of the Master..Tony Haines.

The Art Show provide 'Good Food' on the Friday evening, an abundance of 'Good Fellowship' and a wide range of opportunities 'to serve Rotary'.

The Committee is in the process of bringing the Art Show to a conclusion. The revenue has ceased but the bills are now arriving and payment of prize monies and refunds are keeping treasurer Dick very busy. At this stage it is difficult to put a figure on the overall profit but this will be done when a more precise figure has been determined.

It can be reported of the 336 pictures that were actually hung, 31 were sold.

Sunday was the busiest day but Saturday was the best day for sales. Monday was the quietest day - until all the artists arrived to collect their art works between 4.00 and 6.00pm.

The skills, talents and enthusiasm shown by the team leaders and their teams is something that our Club should be very proud of. More formal acknowledgement and sincere thanks will be expressed to Rotarians, Partners of Rotarians and friends of Rotary at an appropriate time.

It all proved that if you want something done, you ask a Rotarian.

In house winners for the Raffle, include Alex Macgee who won the $200.00 Harvey World travel voucher, Patsy Bush who won the 310 Restaurant voucher and Belinda Edwards who won Geoff Ford's framed tapestry.

The Committee will meet on Friday to determine what still needs to be done; how the Art Show will be evaluated (with an emphasis on member feedback) and

commence preparing a formal report for the Board and members that will enable informed discussion about the future of the Ocean Grove Art Show.

A great effort – thanks to all who were able to assist.

Presentation of the Junior Community Awards:

Tony Haines welcomed Teachers , Year six students and Parents from Ocean Grove and Star of the Sea Primary Schools to our meeting,providing them with a brief outline of the program's purpose.

Students are required to learn a new skill, participate in hobby and recreational activities as well as individual events ,write a report ,attend a meeting as well as be involved with other culture, religious and Indigenous events. Students gave excellent reports about the enjoyment,experience and participation the Program had brought them. All those involved with the JCAs are to be congratulated with special thanks to Jenny Landers (OGPS) who unfortunately was unable to attend, and our own Tony Haines who continue to champion this program.The results were there for all to see and hear.

Annette Cullen: Note from Rod Greer.

After attending Annette's wonderful farewell last week I realize that I had some of the details of her life incorrect my sincere apologies to Peter and his family.

Those who attended will appreciate how rich a life she lived and how diverse was her contribution to her family and community.

Condolences to Jan and John Flett on their sad loss of their grandchild.

Bill Steains reminded us not to get too excited about "christmas beetles", having got a bad infection culminating with visits to the Doctor, Eye specialist and Hospital emergency services several times. He is currently on a six week "steroid push" to aid his recovery.

Community Development: Bill Walton. Attended to the Park last weekend,with everything coming up roses..

Youth: Ann Hodgkinson Time to start thinking about RYLA Candidates in the age range of 18-25, living in or around our local community. Nominations due by February..( if you can think of someone please see Ann).

Looking for volunteers to service some 40 locations, Fridays to Sundays. 2 - 3 hour shifts.

Our Computer Guru ( Apple that is) Rod Bush is holding an info session for actual or prospective Apple users at Gordon Kings house - 225 Thacker Str., Ocean Grove.

Date Wednesday November 9th. Times: 2pm-using iphones/ipods/ipads

2.45pm- Computers..using iMacs & Macbooks. 3.30pm- General Internet/network questions. 4pm - Questions - Finish.

Lots of things happening and it appears that the troops are well advanced and on top of the pre-organization side of things, the team has worked very hard and are to be congratulated for their efforts thus far.

Rotary stands to make 25% commission on any sales of Art Works sold at the show.

According to Ian "there is enough fat on the bird to ensure we will at least be in front.

There are about 360 entries at this point in time ( which is still a moving target).

Some help will be needed to assist with manning our "hired" Eftpos machine.

Divided jobs during the swim (24 hours) into 4 hour segments.

Front Desk.

Swimmer registration,swim kit and show bag etc.handout,receipt of donations,raffle ticket sales(if held).supervision of sleeping areas.

Pool Area.

Swim board lap update,supervision of pool area,background music, Microphone.

BBQ.

Set up and take down,cooking serving and sales gas & food replenishment.

4 hour segments relates to requiring 52 people..We may need to double up as well as having partners help out. IT WONT HAPPEN IF WE DONT TURN UP IN NUMBERS-Please make yourselves available..

We will have entertainment Stay tuned in for updates.

Opening and Closing ceremonies as well as Trophies etc are being arranged

Vale Annette Cullen. As members would now be well aware, Annette passed away on Tuesday morning. All the members and partners of the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove express their sincere sympathy to Peter and family at the passing of Annette.

Annette and Peter have been long term residents of the Bellarine and have raised their two children, Alison and Peter locally (also 4 grandchildren). Annette taught for many years at Barwon Heads Primary and was a keen supporter and organiser of the local junior tennis. Her support of Rotary activities was also much appreciated. Annette will be missed by the Rotary Family.

Reports and Notices

· Alison George has moved back to Grace McKellar for intensive physio and hopes to be back in action in about 5 weeks. There is a rumour that she will lead one of the swim teams after all her water therapy!

· Mike Cummins was a 'virgin chairperson' (and did such a good job that he will get a regular spot!

· Art Show. More rosters were handed around. This time for Hall duties, selling raffle tickets, and for numbers and names of those attending the opening.

· Megaswim. There is an invitation to partners of Rotarians to participate in any of the many tasks that would help run the Megaswim. As for the Art Show this event will require many volunteer hours to complete successfully. Contact Trevor to register your interest. To date we have 8 teams entered. This is a good basis for the event. More details next week.

· Pulse Radio. As part of the promotion for the swim Trevor will be on Pulse Radio from 8.30 next Monday. So tune in!

· FROG's. The most recent breakfast went well with the guest speaker who had been a Physiotherapist with various Commonwealth Games Teams. It is pleasing that there is some interest being generated in assisting Rotary activities and possibly joining in the future. So well done Noel!

· Car Raffle. This will start after the Art Show.

· Market Brochures will be distributed to local businesses and to Tourist Information outlets.

· Footy Tipping. Of the 19 participants only two failed to get a prize this season. So Alex found some obscure justification for giving them each a bottle of wine. The Club got $450 from the Competition to go to Foundation (I think?).

· Sergeant John, Instead of the usual fines session we each contributed to the fines pool as a mark of respect for Annette and to give thanks for our own health.

Board Meeting.

· Monies (up to $1000) not charged for the meal of Oct 4th go toward the entry cost for members and partners for the Art Show.

· Community Service. Welcome Signs for the Lookout Reserve wording is being worked on.

· Winter Market. We will continue to run this in 2012 and review staffing requirements. John Paton was thanked for running it this season.

· Vocational. Revised proposal for The Gordon scholarship was accepted. To be reviewed at the end of 2012.

Guest Speaker.

"Vocational Education and The Gordon Institute"

Jane Trewin. Skills Centre Manager and a former Apprentice of the Year.

Jane spoke on the National Skills Week and how it was promoted through the Gordon. As this was the first year of National Skills Week, The Gordon promoted it by doing aFamily Makeover. A family was selected and The Gordon's skilled students went to work on the family. Fitness, horticulture, beauty therapy, hair, Master Chef, Skills for LIfe, and floristry were all part of the Makeover. (Better Homes and Gardens seems second rate by comparison!)

Details of the distinct nature of The Gordon were explained and it was an impressive list of courses, avenues for learning and potential outcomes that was presented. Jane was proud to point out that The Gordon is the state's largest stand alone TAFE and has a history of 125 years. It has a student body of 22,000 and a teaching staff of 650 full time equivalent teachers.

In his vote of thanks Geoff Ford was able to add to the sense of history. He had done his wool classing there while checking out the Home Economics department!

Nonsense

A handful of 7 year old children were asked what they thought of beer.

· 'I think beer must be good. My dad says the more beer he drinks the prettier my mum gets.'

· 'Beer makes my dad sleepy and we get to watch what we want on television when he is asleep, so beer is nice.'

· 'My Mum and Dad both like beer. My Mum gets funny when she drinks it and takes her top off at parties, but Dad doesn't think this is very funny.'

· 'My Dad loves beer. The more he drinks, the better he dances. One time he danced right into the pool.'

· 'I don't like beer very much. Every time Dad drinks it, he burns the sausages on the barbecue and they taste disgusting.'

· 'I give Dad's beer to the dog and he goes to sleep.'

Another couple of ponderisms.

· If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

· From Richard on behalf of his profession...'I know passing on the right is for the overtaker, and passing on the left is for the undertaker.'

At the beginning of the meeting…

Club Grove Manager Michael spoke to the meeting and gave an apology for last week’s meal and service. He also informed the Club we would not be charged for the meal last week. It was a gracious gesture and was appreciated by members.

Later in the meeting President Margaret asked for suggestions as to what we should do with the money paid last week. A number of suggestions were offered.

(Ed. While expenditure is a Board matter, Marg would be only too happy to receive suggestions as to where the money should go. Personally, I would suggest it become part of our contribution to the Rotary Foundation or one of its designated funds.)

A highlight –for some – of this week’s meeting was the Geelong Fanatics revelling in their 3^rd Grand Final win in 5 years. A reluctant, congratulations, was offered through gritted teeth by many on the non-Geelong supporters.

Reports and Notices

Vocational. Tony Haines led a discussion on the amended Gordon Scholarship proposal. All members (on email) had received a copy of the suggested changes and were asked to vote on their preference. The clear majority were in favour of adopting the model suggested by The Gordon for a First Year Scholarship, where we were involved in helping to select the student.
Secretary Vic called for Directors Reports before Friday October 7th as there is a Board meeting Tuesday October 11^th.
FROGS Meeting on Wednesday 5^th will have about 18 attending. An Olympic Physio will be the guest speaker.
Summer Market Season has started. Jim Ricchini reported that there were 76 sites booked. We raised $165 from the Mitre 10 Raffle (and have been promised 8 vouchers for the rest of the season. Thanks Mitre 10!!); $644 was raised at the gate for the Neighbour Centre. Jim thanked all those who did their rostered duties and invited all to check their emails to know when they are on duty.
Art Show. Dick Clay is looking to fill the raffle ticket roster. Contact him to take up the opportunity. Ian reported that we have now a ‘good number’ of entries. President Marg was able to get volunteers to had out Art Show Posters in the surrounding towns.
Car Raffle. Ticket selling for the car raffle will begin after the Art Show. We have ordered 750 books. Gary Golding is organizing the rosters.
Footy Tipping. Due to the busy program, Alex will hold over making some final, finals presentations until next week.

Sergeant John, made money out many people’s misfortune, such as those who missed their market duties due to daylight saving and amnesia. He also lightened the pocket of Geelong supporters for claiming their ‘efforts’ in some way contributed to Geelong winning.

Russell presented a detailed outline of the history of the Rotary Foundation from its creation by Arch Klumph in 1917 through to its many and varied programs today. The many ways in which people can contribute to the Foundation were outlined and these can be found on the Rotary International web site www.rotary.org. Of particular note is the District 9780 Paul Harris Society.

Russell explained the many programs that are sponsored and supported by the Foundation and had local and overseas examples to illustrate the avenues of service that are available. It served to stress the tremendous work that is done by the Foundation through Rotarians locally and internationally.

He concluded his presentation with the mission statement:

“Our world – not as it is, but as what it could be.”

Secretary. Each member received an invitation to join the ‘Centurion Program’ for Rotary Foundation. A number of club members are Centurion contributors and of course The Rotary Foundation is a great organisation to donate to.
Vocational Service. Tony and Marg have met with The Gordon to discuss the proposed Hospitality Scholarship. Originally this was to be for a 2^nd and 3^rd year student. However, with the change in staff there is a revised proposal for this become a 1^st year scholarship with greater Club input. The revised proposal is being distributed to Club members via email. Please read it and give your comments to Tony Haines. The scholarship value was set at $600.
International. Geoff (Go Pies) Brentnall (despite the euphoria of Grand Final Week) has made another delivery to DIK with excess goods from St. Vinnies.
New Generations (Judy Greer). Appeal for a volunteer to attend, with Tom Attard and his parents, a briefing in Ballarat on October 14^th 5.00 – 8.00 for the National Youth Science Forum. We have sponsored Tom and it would be good if someone from the Club could attend in support. Please contact Ann Hodgkinson, Rod or Judy Greer for further information.
Art Show. Ian reported that we have now reached ‘a critical mass’ of entries. We have about 200 and have a capacity for 450. Rod Birrell is looking for volunteers to do the set up on Thursday and take down on Tuesday. He made wild promises about what benefits were in store if you volunteered for his roster.
Footy Tipping. Alex Magee presented me (Rod G) with a ‘bottle of the finest’ for being nearly correct with the winner of the Brownlow medal.
Queenscliffe Information Board. The Borough is developing a new forshore plan and will be shifting this structure. It has our name on it and it needs refurbishing. Clarification of responsibility (us and/or Queenscliffe RC) is needed as well as a plan for renovation.

‘Bellarine Community Health’. Sarah Wynn

Sarah is the Community Development worker for the Bellarine Community Health Services (BCH). BCH is an organisation that provides health service support for the Bellarine Peninsula. It has 230 employees and 350 volunteers. (One of the biggest employers on the peninsula) and provides a diverse range of health support services to people living on the Peninsula. They have a web site (www.bch.org.au) which I would urge you all to have a look at to get a feel for the extensive range of activities that are provided.

Sarah’s message that there are significant health support services of a preventative nature available locally, was well made. These services covered all age groups and tried to deal with causes rather than cures. It reminded me of the concept of a ‘fence at the top of the cliff or an ambulance at the bottom’. We will certainly hear about Bellarine Community Health in the future.

What impressed me with Sarah’s presentation was her ability to ‘deal with’ people who have known her since her childhood. She did so with a very friendly and informative manner that was quite engaging. I’m sure even the representative ‘Pie’ supporter present could not have been offended by Sarah’s engaging ‘dig’ about the forthcoming Grand Final. Nor, do I suspect, that her ‘victim’ will forget, should the Pies actually win!

Secretary. A certificate of Appreciation from Bellarine secondary College for supporting various programs, including a VCE scholarship, Roy Rose Awards (Yr 9 citizenship), and student camps. Vic is also looking for someone to go to the District AGM to represent our club. The AGM is on Nov 6^th in Ararat.
International. Geoff Brentnall has more goods from St Vincent De Paul’s and is looking for material from the Club to go to Donations In Kind (DIK).
Membership. Noel Emselle will be acting Chairperson on behalf of Heather while she is on leave.
FROGS. The next FROG's Breakfast meeting is on Wednesday 5th October at 7 for 7:15 am. (A later start as 6:45 was too early for some Rotarians).

‘The lighter side of being a physiotherapist to Commonwealth and Olympic Games teams’.

As we all know, the future of Rotary depends on us bringing along and inspiring a new generation of Rotarians. I appeal to you all to approach younger and vibrant members of the community who may one day find the time, energy and commitment to join a service club.

The idea of the FROG group is to ensure that they have an opportunity to engage with us and see how terrific Rotary membership can be.

We have 2 more breakfast meetings before our busy summer period and I would hope that when we need more raffle sellers, market volunteers, and the like we can put out a call to the registered FROGs to do a bit of community service.

So, please get your invitations out there and bring or send along anyone who might make a good friend to Rotary.

Art Show. Tony Haines has emailed a set of task to all members. Choose your options.
Fund Raising. Phil Edwards reported that we are nearly half way to the target of $40,000 for the Ambulance to upgrade their heart monitors. Todate we have $8,000 from Ambulance Vic, $5,000 from our Club, Market $2,600, and the Ambulance auxiliary $2,500. The Lion’s Club is unable to come onboard as a major partner due to other commitments. Phil is looking for two volunteers to help him form a c’tee to look at how the remaining funds can be raised.
Conference 2012. We now have 22 rooms booked.

The changing Face of Education.

Guest Speaker, Colin Sing, Principal of Bellarine Secondary College, gave a thought provoking presentation on the challenges of change facing education today as it applied to Bellarine Secondary College(BSC).

The short DVD of ‘Did You Know’ highlighted the incredibly rapid rate of change in the world that students need to be prepared for. Things such as the jobs they will be doing haven’t need developed, technology will move so rapidly that we won’t be able to understand it (most of us know that from personal experience). Colin described it as ‘exponential times’.

BSC is a dual campus College of 1200 students. It has 120 teaching staff and is the biggest employer on the Bellarine. It faces unique challenges drawing students from across 8 different communities on the Bellarine.

The challenges Colin highlighted were developing 21st century skills that emphasized self direction, technology, global awareness and collaborative communication. Dealing with social networking and mobile phones was very much a ‘catch up’ process, but provided opportunities to incorporate the technology into the classroom. Opening up an insular mindset of people living on the Bellarine to opportunities outside the area was important and this involved city experiences, camps and some overseas trips. Most students went on to Deakin Uni or The Gordon and only 5% ended up in Melbourne for tertiary education. Dealing with the incredibly complex issues surrounding students social and emotional wellbeing, especially as it is affected by Facebook and other social media has lead to a major increase in staff resources. Finally, providing the necessary diversity of curriculum through VCE and VCAL in an increasingly stringent financial environment all made for a ‘Changing Face of Education’.

In his introduction and conclusion Colin stressed the valuable part we played in supporting BSC.

From the District Governor’s Newsletter for September. ‘New Generations’ is the 5^th Avenue of Service.

Some employers are paying their apprentices to attend the RYLA programs.
Five Secondary schools have shown an interest in developing Interact Clubs within their school.
Clubs are encouraged to build programs that involve young people in community service, thus helping to build a culture of service in the next generation.
16 Exchange Students are currently visiting on Long term and short-term exchanges within our District.
District 9780 Ambassadorial Scholar Beth Jens is studying her Masters (and then PHD) in the USA in Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. That is impressive!!!
We even get a mention in the newsletter for the Art Show.

Details are also provided about other Youth Programs and I’d urge Rotarians to have a look on the website for what is happening around the District in support of these programs.

The Census

Last Tuesday I attended a debriefing day for the census in our region (Geelong and the Surfcoast). Some of the, maybe interesting, facts and impressions that are worth sharing were as follows:

Australia is one of the best countries at getting accurate data about its population and housing. In 2006 we recorded about 97% of houses and 98% of population. This census it is anticipated that we will do better as we spent more time on working with the indigenous community, ethnic groups and the homeless.

In the USA they get about 80% and the UK got very excited when they got 85% to complete returns this year. In these countries the census is only every 10 years.

In the Geelong area we ran a Multilanguage form filling and information session that attracted over 100 residents from a wide range of nationalities.

Next census is likely to see more emphasis on electronic data collection, especially by collectors using hand held devises.

In 5 years over 50% of the population were living at a different address to the present.

In Victoria it costs about $15 per head to do the census

Over 300 people were taken to court last census for non-compliance. Fines up to $110 a day from census day could be the result.

Maths: The total is when you add up the numbers and a remainder is an animal that pulls santa through the sky.
Maths: If it is less than 90º then it is a cute angel.
History: Sometimes in war they take prisoners and keep them as ostriges until the war is over. Some prisoners end up in consterpation camps.
Holidays: On our activity holiday Dad wanted to ride the hores, but Mum said they were too ekpensiv.
Geography: The closet town to France is Dover. You can get to France on a train or you can go on a fairy

Just in case you have forgotten the Conference dates are Friday March 23^rd, Saturday March 24^th and Sunday March 25^th. We are booked for TWO nights, Friday and Saturday night at a cost of $140 per night including a buffet breakfast.

Conference 2013. Far more important! Gary Golding informed us that we have a lot of the ‘bits’ in place. The venue will be the Bellarine Aquatic Centre with the support of the Surfside Primary School for morning and afternoon tea and lunch. Catering will involve local groups. Formal special meetings will be at Suma Park and the social program is exceptional!! The Blues Train has been booked as has the refurbished Portsea Ferry for the Saturday night (can we go on both?).

Art Show. Getting closer every day! And yes we are getting entries. Raffle ticket roster is a volunteer opportunity for the weekends (see Dick Clay). Tony Haines is looking for people to lead Hall setting up and taking down for the Art Show weekend, (It’s called ‘bumping in and out’ in arts circles) and someone to organize the raffle at the Art Show. Please form an orderly queue in front of Tony and Pam’s place in Blackwell St.

Homeless badges. Peter Hawthorne is selling these at $5 each to support homeless youth. He has enough for all members, and will get more!

Keith Fagg and Jon Mamonski from Bravehearts

Guest Speakers. Bravehearts.

Keith Fagg and John Manmonski gave a very moving account of the organization they are leading and of the issue of child sexual assault.

Basically, Bravehearts is an organisation that is addressing the issue of child sexual abuse in young children. Keith and John outlined a number of quite frightening statistics. In Australia some 59,000 children each year are subjected to some form of abuse. That’s 1 in 5 or a child every 9 minutes. Most of us are parents and grandparents. I find it difficult to get my mind around those figures and then to think of our 5 grandchildren!

Most children who are abused are victims to someone they know and very few perpetrators are actually convicted.

The foundation aims to develop and initiate programs that will create awareness and educate children in strategies that will enable them to act when they feel uncomfortable. A helpline 24/7 has been started. 1800brave1 (1800272831)

Bravehearts is also introducing programs into Geelong and District schools next term and are looking for support from individuals and clubs to assist in funding the programs. Membership is available for $10 and the cost of the program into one school is $1200 to run the program and provide materials.

A bit of editorialising……!

New Generations or Regenerating Rotary.

In reading this month’s Rotary Down Under for New Generations Month I came across an article on ‘eClubs’.

Has anyone in the club tried a make up through an ‘eClub’ meeting. This month’s RDU has the story of Simone Carot-Collins joining one such club. Simone had been a Rotoractor, Rotary Club President and Assistant Governor and now with two children found it impossible to continue her Rotary commitment in the traditional way. The ‘eclub’ option has allowed her to continue her membership in a fulfilling and satisfying way.

In District 9455, which covers most of WA north of Perth and Kalgoorlie, they are intending to start a hybrid form of the ‘eclub’. It will involve a monthly meeting and regular online sessions. As a member of an eclub members must be online for ½ hour each week and commit to 13 hours of community service that is approved by the club board each quarter.

In our District 9780 we cover a large area and surely time and fuel costs must keep a lot of potential Rotarians out of recruitment. Is the ‘hybrid’ concept a model for us to try? Is anyone interested in taking on such a challenge? Is it a way of developing new clubs and attracting new and younger members?

DG Bears. As a fundraiser for Foundation Jenny Trenery is having a name the bear competition. The bear has migrated from China and has managed to be dressed in Guernsey. We contributed well on the night.
Footy Tipping. Billy Walton was the clear winner and the rest of us were losers!
Gordon King, as Sargeant, took us through a Rotary Quiz. There was a certain amount of cheating from the top table and of course they won! Protests over the 1^st President of Rotary International were ignored. My research found that Sylvester Schiele was the 1^st President of the Chicago Club, and Paul Harrris was the first president of the Rotary International (Gordon was, of course, correct!)
PARTNERS NIGHTS. Sorry folks but we need to be reminded again, especially as the Club is continuing to charge us for the number booked. If it is a partner’s night you must apologise for your partner if they aren’t attending. (Otherwise, you can expect an account).
DG Brian. This was an excellent presentation. Brian met with some of the Board in the afternoon and we were able to update him on the activities of the club and of course he was impressed! Brian’s address used the 2011/12 theme of “Reach Within To Embrace Humanity”. Three aspects that were stressed were the emphasis on family. The best we can do is help provide a home, where we can educate the mother, educate the children and thus build good neighbourhoods, communities and ultimately good nations. Secondly, to have continuity in our programs. What we do shouldn’t be episodic, but have ongoing support. Thirdly if we want change then we need to be the change we wish to see. If we want peace, we must live in peace and try to be the instruments of change. The 02/03 RI President talked about changing the world one life at a time. Brian then referred to a number of our programs that fitted the above challenges, including the heart monitors for the ambulances, senior citizens dinner, Lookout Reserve, Megaswim, and several others. He called for us to continue to display leadership

Lookout Reserve. Judy and I did our rostered clean up at the Lookout Reserve last Sunday. There was very little rubbish, the grass was tidy, the new wall and direction finder (and, yes I did check to see that it was pointing the right way) certainly added to the southern side. All the signs were clean and generally the place looked ‘cared for’.

Did you know that when you stay in a hotel or motel with ‘card swipe’ doors that the card contains your details (I thought it was just coded to your room) including name, credit card and address. The cards are not reconfigured until someone else hires that room. Your details sit in the ‘tray’ at the reception desk for anyone to ‘swipe’ with a card reader. How secure is that?

The Meeting August 30^th.

As a ‘Teams Meeting’ it looked very much like a Club Assembly, but the attendance was very good. Well done to all who attended and welcome back to the travelers.

Reports

Community. (Bill Walton) Our work at the Lookout Reserve is ongoing. The weekly roster is happening and we will continue to maintain the grass and the plants. The brick entrance is being built along with the drinker, cairn and direction finder. In the future we’ll put in more shrubs and grass and information signs to the reserve and as identification for the reserve. We may even get up to a Rotunda some time in the future.

Surfside Primary Kitchen and Garden will be monitored as to how we can have further input.

Senior Citizens Christmas function will go ahead as will the ANZAC morning breakfast.

We continue to be part of the District Smoke alarm battery service for the needy.

Future possibilities include a Thacker St boardwalk to the river and park development at Tuckfield and Presidents St Corner.

Social (Marion Walton). Lots of good suggestions for activities and we should see a fun year. Ideas included, Music in the Gardens (in Geelong), Sorrento for lunch, tirivia night, and even mini golf got a go!
Market (John Paton). The gaps on the roster for this Sudnay were able to be filled. Rotarians were reminded to park around the back of Surfside to relieve parking in the main carpark.
Youth (Ann Hodgkinson). The budget for youth was outlined and this also showed up the full extent of this program for the club. Contact has been made for the Thai students’ visit in December, applicants are being sought for the various awards, scholarships and camps. (Ed. There is still scope for some others to get involved to take on some of the tasks. It’s a big field)
FROGS (Marg Campbell). The next meeting is Wednesday Sept 7^th at the Ocean Grove Golf Club (6.45 for 7.00). Helen Buttress from the Business Association is the speaker “Strategies to survive the current climate”.
MEGASWIM (Trevor McArdle). Nov 19/20. We have 3 teams registered already and will now begin to advertise extensively in the area to attract up to a total of 12 teams (6 lanes). Fund raising will be by MS and we will be ‘supervising’ over the 24 hrs.
Vocational Service (Tony Haines). The Gordon scholarship will need to talked through with the new member of staff at the Gordon who will be responsible.

The Pride of Workmanship Award is now open. We are looking for suitable candidates in the following areas:

Brian is a member of Warrnambool Rotary. He has been club secretary, president, GSE Team Leader, and has fulfilled many district leadership roles. In his professional life he has worked in heath care (ambulance, rural health, and also drug and alcohol services). Now retired, he drives tourist coaches! Jenny also has health care background working in hospitals and pathology.

Community (Bill Walton). The foundation for the wall at the Lookout Reserve has been completed and the rest will be done in the coming week. The brickwork for the direction finder is to follow. We have already received some favourable comment from visitors to the park.
Market (John Paton). The September Market Roster will be sent out (in the emails this week already!) There are several gaps and so volunteers are needed urgently. The alternative is you may be ‘volunteered’, so get in quick!
Youth (Ann Hodgkinson). Members were asked if they would support hosting of Thai students who are at school in Bendigo under the sponsorship of the Eaglehawk Rotary Club. The students are in Years 10,11, & 12. There was support for our hosting of the students in early December for a holiday break for their hosts. Five or six families offered to be hosts. Ann will organize details with Eaglehawk.
Social (Marion Walton). A pizza and movie night to ‘Red Dog’ was well supported (16 Rotarians and partners attended).
Art Show (Ian Downing). Entries are starting to come in and further publicity is underway within the arts community in Geelong.
Footy (Geoff Brentnall, aka ‘Collingwood Kid!) Gary Golding won last week and Bill Walton is still well in front (but will he be loyal to St Kilda this week).
Fines (John Paton). As usual a lot of half truths and character assassinating, but Coral traveling to Torquay to get to Waurn Ponds and Fred Andrews buying movie tickets for the wrong night were top efforts.

Guest Speaker

Peter Hibbert (Building Bellarine Connections).

Peter Hibbert

Peter covered a wide range of issues relating to accessibility on The Bellarine for all ages, especially the more senior (that’s most of us!) and younger.

Building Bellarine Connections is a community organization that is funded and supported as a joint venture by the State Government, City of Greater Geelong, Borough of Queenscliffe, and Bellarine Community Health. It’s purpose is to examine access on the peninsula for all different groups. The group then acts as an ‘action group’ to bring about change.

Peter spoke of the various reports that had been developed and how some of these have turned into real change of access. In particular, readable timetables at all bus stops, the provision of ‘community buses’ for people to get to shops, appointments, etc. Buses, bus interchange in Geelong, and taxis on the peninsula were other areas of action for BBC.

A couple of interesting facts Peter raised were:

there has been a 30% increase on bus use in the last couple of years,
The Bellarine has the highest percentage of over 60’s in the state,
5000 people accessed the community bus between Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove in January, and
there is no petrol available on the eastern end of the Bellarine past Portarlington.
Peter has even been able to use MYKI locally!!

My grandpa started walking
five kilometres a day when he was 60.
Now he's 97 years old
and we have no idea where the hell he is.
The only reason I resumed running is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.
I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I'm doing...

Social Event. Movie and Pizza at Readings, Waurn Ponds Cinema for the screening of “RED DOG”. Marion would like numbers. Meeting at 5.30 for pizza and pasta before the screening at 6.50.
International. Geoff Brentnall has taken another load of goods to DIK from StVincent de Paul in Ocean Grove.
Youth. Ann Hodgkinson reported that our student for National Youth Science forum has been officially accepted, and she and Judy Greer will be visiting Bellarine Secondary College to discuss the Roy Rose awards and VCE support program this week. There has been an invitation for us to have a display at the College’s Awards Night in December. (Take note Publicity…. A big opportunity).
September Market. John Paton has lost the counter! (1, 2, 4, 7, 3, 6, etc…) Help him find it! There are also vacancies for several jobs at the market. The roster will show your ‘windows of opportunity’. See John P to offer to help.
Blues Train. On January 28^th Richard Grimmett is organizing the booking of a carriage. It’s a great night and shouldn’t be missed. 50 tickets available.
Hans Franken sends his best wishes from Broome and also some examples of his photography were shared.
Art Show Raffle tickets. At the Pt Lonsdale Market we sold 4 books and two bears!
Club Grove is having a wine night next Wednesday ($55 a head). If you are interested contact the club.

Angela Di Sciascio

‘Finding Valentino’. Angela Di Sciascio was our guest speaker. What a terrific presentation. Angela had spent a year (2008) in the Abruzzo region (east central Italy) where her father had lived before migrating post war to Australia. Like many families, they didn’t talk much about the past and so her father’s heritage was all a mystery. With the onset of her father’s alzheimer’s disease, her journey back was to discover as much about her Italian heritage as she could. The book she wrote “Finding Valentino” is the story of that journey, the culture, the language, cuisine, and above all the connection with family. It was a thoroughly enjoyable presentation including several passages from the book. The sales of her book were testament to how much we enjoyed the evening.

“Never lose your heritage”

It helps make sense of the present and the future.

Our District was one of three nationally to have grown in the last year. Four of our clubs are participating in pilot projects on membership. The district newsletter has some details and this can be accessed on the district website: www.rotary9780.org There are also articles on Australian Rotary Health, Organ Donor awareness and other project around the district.

For the gardeners: When I bought some fruit trees the nursery owner gave me some insects to help with pollination. They were free bees.
