Reports.
Geoff Brentnall
  • Community (Bill Walton).  The foundation for the wall at the Lookout Reserve has been completed and the rest will be done in the coming week.  The brickwork for the direction finder is to follow.   We have already received some favourable comment from visitors to the park.
  • Market (John Paton).  The September Market Roster will be sent out (in the emails this week already!)  There are several gaps and so volunteers are needed urgently.  The alternative is you may be ‘volunteered’, so get in quick!
  • Youth (Ann Hodgkinson).  Members were asked if they would support hosting of Thai students who are at school in Bendigo under the sponsorship of the Eaglehawk Rotary Club.  The students are in Years 10,11, & 12.  There was support for our hosting of the students in early December for a holiday break for their hosts.  Five or six families offered to be hosts.  Ann will organize details with Eaglehawk.
  • Social (Marion Walton).  A pizza and movie night to ‘Red Dog’ was well supported (16 Rotarians and partners attended).
  • Art Show (Ian Downing).  Entries are starting to come in and further publicity is underway within the arts community in Geelong.
  • Footy (Geoff Brentnall, aka ‘Collingwood Kid!)  Gary Golding won last week and Bill Walton is still well in front (but will he be loyal to St Kilda this week).
  • Fines (John Paton).  As usual a lot of half truths and character assassinating, but Coral traveling to Torquay to get to Waurn Ponds and Fred Andrews buying movie tickets for the wrong night were top efforts.
Guest Speaker
Peter Hibbert  (Building Bellarine Connections).
Peter Hibbert
Peter covered a wide range of issues relating to accessibility on The Bellarine for all ages, especially the more senior (that’s most of us!) and younger.
Building Bellarine Connections is a community organization that is funded and supported as a joint venture by the State Government, City of Greater Geelong, Borough of Queenscliffe, and Bellarine Community Health.  It’s purpose is to examine access on the peninsula for all different groups.  The group then acts as an ‘action group’ to bring about change.
Peter spoke of the various reports that had been developed and how some of these have turned into real change of access. In particular, readable timetables at all bus stops, the provision of ‘community buses’ for people to get to shops, appointments, etc.  Buses, bus interchange in Geelong, and taxis on the peninsula were other areas of action for BBC.
A couple of interesting facts Peter raised were:
  • there has been a 30% increase on bus use in the last couple of years,
  • The Bellarine has the highest percentage of over 60’s in the state,
  • 5000 people accessed the community bus between Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove in January, and
  • there is no petrol available on the eastern end of the Bellarine past Portarlington.
  • Peter has even been able to use MYKI locally!!
Stuff and Nonsense
  • When I was forty, my doctor told me that a man of my age shouldn’t be playing tennis (or running, swimming, etc).  I couldn’t wait until I was 50 and could start again!
  • Walking can add minutes to your life.
    This enables you, at 85,
to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing
    home at $4,000 per month.
  • My grandpa started walking
five kilometres a day when he was 60.
    Now he's 97 years old
and we have no idea where the hell he is.
  • The only reason I resumed running is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

  • I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I'm doing...

  • Club Grove is having a wine night next Wednesday ($55 a head).  If you are interested contact the club.
    • Angela Di Sciascio
  • ‘Finding Valentino’. Angela Di Sciascio was our guest speaker.  What a terrific presentation.  Angela had spent a year (2008) in the Abruzzo region (east central Italy) where her father had lived before migrating post war to Australia. Like many families, they didn’t talk much about the past and so her father’s heritage was all a mystery. With the onset of her father’s alzheimer’s disease, her journey back was to discover as much about her Italian heritage as she could.  The book she wrote “Finding Valentino” is the story of that journey, the culture, the language, cuisine, and above all the connection with family.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable presentation including several passages from the book.  The sales of her book were testament to how much we enjoyed the evening.
“Never lose your heritage”
It helps make sense of the present and the future.
From the District.
Our District was one of three nationally to have grown in the last year.  Four of our clubs are participating in pilot projects on membership. The district newsletter has some details and this can be accessed on the district website: www.rotary9780.org   There are also articles on Australian Rotary Health, Organ Donor awareness and other project around the district.
Stuff and Nonsense…
For the pill pushers:  Pharmacists find their work to be very encapsulating.
For the gardeners: When I bought some fruit trees the nursery owner gave me some insects to help with pollination. They were free bees.
Club shutterbugs:  A photographer was great at botany because he knew photo synthesis.

The week that was……..

The Meeting August 9th.
A great intro and welcome by our President Margaret.  Who'd have thought that in one short sentence Margaret could create such imagery of her household in the early hours of Monday morning!!!

Reports….
Pulse 94.7   Rotary Time slot Monday 8.30 am.
We didn't listen!
It was disappointing that no-one at the meeting last Tuesday had listened to the efforts of Coral and John on Pulse Radio (Monday 8.30am).  It is important that we support each other in club ventures such as the Art show, Radio, ANZAC Day, etc.
Richard Grimmett has a recording of the broadcast and the podcast can also be downloaded from the Pulse website: www.947thepulse.com
(I'm listening to the podcast as I prepare the bulletin.)
A belated, well done and thanks to Coral and John!

Health.
  • Bowelscan Report.  The sale of test kits was up on the previous year.  In our postcode (3226) there were 5 positive tests.
Community
  • The brickwork for the Lookout is ready for construction. Paper work has gone to Council and a 'brickie' is ready and waiting!
International.
  • Shelter Box and Disaster Aid Australia have both put in articles and information relating to their projects in recent disaster areas.  Check the district website to see what they are doing.  Clearly they are looking for our support!
  • DIK.  There will be a pick up next Tuesday August 16th.  Please contact Geoff Brentnall if you have suitable goods for pick up.
August Market.
  • There were 54 stalls and $729 was raised at the door for the Ambulance project. The day was a mixed success for the stallholders.  John Paton called for some new volunteers for the September 4th market.  The roster with 'gaps' will be out next week.
Social Events.
  • Sunday 21st August.  The RED DOG movie will be on at Readings Cinema.  Meet for a Pizza or Pasta at 5.30pm and the movie will be screened at 6.50pm.  Let Marion know if you're going.  These events are always good fun.  It's evidently a good movie.
  • October 9th A mystery bus trip and 2 course lunch for about $50 each.  Marion Walton will have more details next week.  Please give it your support.
Footy tipping
  • Geoff Brentnall (more Collingwood!) is filling in for  Alex Magee.  This weeks winner is Jan Brown and Billy Walton is the clear leader.
DGE Helen Trigg
  • Alison is now getting a recording of the meeting and enjoying it immensely.  Well done, Richard.
ANZAC DAY Breakfast.
  • For many years a team of Rotarians have been cooking bacon and eggs at the Dawn Service. A request has been received from the RSL asking if Rotary would take over making tea and coffee.  It is not a difficult task, but does involve a 5.30am start.
  • Rod Greer tells all about the Census
  • We are looking for someone to take on the job.  It involves getting volunteers to help, purchasing supplies, setting up and cleaning up.  All over by 7.30am.
John Calnin has the details.  It is a great activity for the club and this would add to the quality of our Rotary Service.

The 'guest' speaker.  Someone to be counted on!
I thought I was brilliant. What more can be said……
Well, not quite, but I was happy to share something of the Census with the club.  It has been an interesting journey and I have enjoyed finding out about a new area of the Bellarine. Hopefully, it wasn't too boring.  (I promise to shut up for some time……)

Conference 2012.
  • There are only a couple of rooms left.  See Rod G. with your $50 soon!

From August Board:
Youth: $8,000 worth of projects were approved by the Board.  Ann H will need help in looking after all the different programs.  If you haven't got a 'big' job then please see Ann to take on one of the many opportunities.  We intend to support RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Australia for18 -25 year olds), RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment for 14-17 Year olds), several of the Science programs, junior leadership awards and programs, VCE scholarships and summer schools.  These programs are a  strength of our Club and we need to be fully supportive of them.

Publicity: 349 hits to our website! We even have our own facebook page at: www.facebook.com/pages/Rotary-club-of-Ocean-Grove

International: Geoff and his team will be continuing with DIK, and be getting speakers for ROMAC and Interplast as well as seeking financial support. The c'tee also wants to build our ties with overseas clubs with which we have had contact.  (Southampton in Canada, Dacca in Bangladesh and Salzgitter in Germany).
Geoff is even planning an international dinner.

Vocational Programs.  These were reported on last week in the Bulletin.

Fred's fancy (Money Matters): The last word surely must come from the Treasurer.
Charities account has a balance of $26,843 with current commitments of $13,000.  The Administration account has $13,733.  But…… don't get excited. It has to last.

Something to think about.
'Smoke signals and Tom Toms or bytes and tweets'
The idea of Facebook and twittering are foreign to most of us.  I don't really want them and don't really want to use them.  However, I do want to be part of a Rotary membership where I'm not one of the younger members……
Nigel Lane put it well last week in his address about 'Facebook' being a friend or foe.  I'd be suspecting that we can fight the trend of 500 million world-wide and become 'communication dinosaurs' wondering where the world has moved to or we can learn how to use 'Facebook' and twitter for our own Rotary message.

It is interesting to note that since I joined Ocean Grove Rotary in 2003 there were several members not 'online' and without mobiles.  Now, if I'm correct, we have only one member not on line and none that don't have and use their mobile phone.  I'd suspect that we have at least 8 – 10 who are on Facebook.
It is in these areas where we must act in order to extend Rotary to the next generations.
Tuesday night's guest speaker (Ron Cockell) further accentuated the need for us to try something different when he 'convinced' Coral Barker(Art Show) and John Fox(Membership) to be part of the Rotary Radio segment on Pulse 97.4 next Monday (August 8th) at 8.30 am.  I hope we are all listening.
There is a clear link between membership and communication.  There is equally a link between what we are seen to be doing and the level of support we receive in sponsorship, new member interest, etc.
Rod G.
(sub. editor)

Meeting August 2.
Special General Meeting.
We now have a new set of Rules and Bylaws that fit in with RI and Consumer Affairs, etc.  Well done to Tony Haines who with his usual diligence has made the 'rough places smooth' in bringing these documents up to date and eliminating contradictions.

Vocational Service.  The plan for 2011/12 includes the following……
Hospitality Apprenticeship 2nd & 3rd year Scholarships - $400 & $200 respectively.
Pride of Workmanship Awards with the following possible categories: customer/trade service, business innovation, professional services, trade apprenticeship and community service.
Work Place visit.  Suggestions invited.
Vocational service speaker during National Skills Week in October.
Shine On Awards
Davidson Restaurant visit.
Member classification talks.  (Tony Haines)
International. Geoff Brentnall has taken another load of goods (including 'National Geographics') to DIK in Geelong.
Community Service.  The combined ramp project with Lions, in Barwon Heads is 'a work in progress' and will be on hold until the project manager gets back from holidays.
Market.  The next market is this Sunday (August 7th) in the Surfside Centre.  Rosters have been distributed.
DG Helen reported that the "Yellowboat" rowing around Australia will bypass the Bellarine and go straight to Melbourne, thus not requiring any hosting by us.  She thanked those who had volunteered.
Conference 2012:  We have booked 20 rooms (17 doubles and 3 singles) for the Conference.  March 23rd, 24th & 25th 2012 at the Olde Maritime Motel Warrnambool.  So far Rod G has deposits for 11 rooms.  Get in quick, they will go fast.

FROG's Breakfast. Two new "friends" were due to attend but one did not show. Apologies were received from several others. 12 of us in total had a hearty breakfast as the sun rose over the golf course and river.  Then we heard an interesting account of Mark Graham's recent visit to Uganda where he helped with two Cotton-on Foundation projects.  My thanks to the Rotarians who made the effort to support the initiative.  As the weather improves I am confident we will get better support. (Noel Emselle)

Guest Speaker, Ron Cockell from Pulse Radio 94.7 (Geelong's community radio station).
Ron outlined his working life in radio from 3GL to 3CS, 3AW as night editor to Pulse 94.7 in Geelong.  He had some great anecdotes of his time in radio and also had an important message as to the influence radio has as a means of communicating a message.  In particular, relating to Rotary using the opportunity presented to tell 'the Rotary Story' in its many forms.  At which point Ron then dragooned Coral Barker for the Art Show and John Fox as a long serving Rotarian to be part of the next program on Monday August 8th at 8.30 am.
Ron stressed that Pulse Radio had a significant audience base reaching over most of Geelong, the Bellarine and Surf Coast.  The Rotary program has been supported by some of the Clubs in groups 9 & 10 (Geelong, Bellarine, and Surfcoast area) and was keen to get more support.
Sumfing lita!
The Art of Insults from the past….
To the British Prime Minister, Disraeli… "Sir you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease".
"That depends Sir", said Disraeli, "whether I embrace your policies or your mistresses!"
"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure."  Clarence Darrow
"He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends."  Oscar Wilde.
"He's a self made man and worships his creator".  John Bright.
Have a good week in Rotary and listen to the Pulse on Monday at 8.30am.
