Guest Speaker: Tony Featherstone – Cottage By The Sea

Cottage by the Sea is overseen by a voluntary Board of Management. Over 600 children a year from all over Victoria are provided with relief care in a holiday environment at the Cottage.
The Cottage offers short term care (camps) for children. We see them as a haven for children in need. Children can be referred to The Cottage by schools, social workers, community welfare groups, doctors, refuges etc.The camps vary from a five to an eleven day stay and are held throughout the year, not just in the school holidays.

During their stay the Children are kept active and occupied during the day and, depending on the season, visit many local tourist attractions, including the Marine Discovery Centre, Jirrhalinga Wild Life Park and Amaze-N-Things. Importantly they experience numerous outdoor activities, fishing, barbecues, beach games as well as indoor activities, art, craft, cooking. Educational and recreational activities, along with rest and plentiful food, is the order of the day. The children are supervised twenty four hours a day. All staff are qualified and/or in-training teachers or child care workers.

The Relationship between The Cottage and Cathy Freeman
Cottage by the Sea has for many years considered the benefits of having a Patron represent its interests to the Australian community. Cathy, through her knowledge of Cottage by the Sea and her public profile, provided us with the opportunity to appoint a Patron. The Cottage has had an ongoing relationship with Cathy by helping to respond to fan mail since the Sydney Olympics. This activity continues today under the sponsorship of Australia Post. We have designed Cathy's role as patron around the commitments and responsibilities that Cathy has today. Cathy has visited The Cottage, met the children, and has developed an understanding of the caring environment and support provided. Finally and most importantly, on every visit Cathy has shown a unique ability to have fun, relate to and inspire the children.
