Guest Speaker, SC Jeff Brough (Bellarine Police Centre). Jeff is the officer in charge of Youth Relations and has been developing a program called the Bellarine Ropes Project. The project is designed for young offenders who have been charged or formally warned by a magistrate. Young offenders must be under the age of 18 and be first or second time offenders only. These young people have made a mistake, and the Ropes course is designed to encourage TRUST, to BREAK DOWN BARRIERS between officers and youth.
The course is a one-day exercise each time and is held at Camp Wilkin, Anglesea. Groups of 5 or 6 youth and the officers who processed the offences participate in high and low ropes activities.
The concept was developed in Boronia where statistics show that of 86 youth, only 4 re-offended after participating in the course.
The project is yet to be approved in Geelong by the Chief Magistrate of Victoria. The cost is $20-30 per head per day. Rotary may have an opportunity to fund some local young leaders or surfers to experience the course and the speakers who attend. Subjects such as drug use are covered.
Graham Hobbs – A Hawaiian Night will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Highton/Kardinia on October 9th at the Italian Social Club. Entertainment provided by the Highton Players, as well as ‘Shave and Shear a Solicitor” aka Graham Hobbs!
