Bulletin number 15

Bulletin for the meeting held at the Ocean Grove Hotel on Wednesday October 13, 2004

Welcome, John Fox:
  • Kaye Rundle is not able to attend tonight’s meeting as planned. She will however attend in two weeks time.
  • Tim Kemp will be absent for a time as he is travelling to Brisbane to donate his kidney to his grandson. Member’s thoughts and prayers are with the Kemp family at this time. (Later it was announced that there has been a complication and Tim has had to return mid trip). John Dodgshun spoke to the club regarding some aspects of the kidney transplant procedure.
  • Welcome visiting Rotarian Charles Dawborn, Senior Active, previously Public Accountant and soon to be member of this club.
  • Welcome guest Andrew Brown (past member)
  • Welcome also Jan Ford and Jo Hawthorne.
  • Calendars are still available for purchase
  • Congratulations to Alison George – 8 years in Rotary and Helen Trigg, 4 years.
  • The Rotary Club of Ocean Grove was formed on October 11th, 1983 – acknowledgement was given to Foundation Members who were present - Henry Hudson, John Calnin and John Wynn.

Who Am I? Geoff Chandler gave a very interesting and entertaining talk on his unique pursuit of Milk Carton Collecting. From Maryborough Vic to Maryborough Qld, Cheshire to Oopsla to Russia, Copenhagen to Hertzfeldt, to Italia, Geoff has collected them all – and, much to his surprise, he has been unable to locate a fellow milk carton collector! This of course makes his collection VERY valuable!

Signe Uhlenfeldt: Signe expressed her appreciation for the hospitality and the interesting excursions that she has enjoyed while staying with the members.

Community Service, John Wynn: Bloodarine Challenge continues and Christmas Tree activities will begin soon.

Vocational Service, Alison George for Peter Cullen: The Dinner at The Gordon is to be held on November 9th.

Youth Service, David Tyrrell: David will travel to Warrnambool this weekend with Signe, Carolyn and a Brazilian exchange student from the Highton Kardinia Club for a training weekend for Youth Exchange.

Guest Speaker, Bill Brown: Bill spoke of his 15 years experience as a crewmember on a recreational hot air balloon. The rule of thumb is that if the tops of the trees are moving, you will not get off the ground. Therefore there is a lot of time spent standing around, or pursuing other attractions in the area. This is a good reason that a lot of hot air ballooning is done in the winery regions such as Rutherglen and Benalla.
Ballooning is quiet (you are moving with the wind), a great way to see the world, and controlled by hot air, and altimeter, rate of climb meter and temperature indicator. The first flight occurred in 1783.
