Guest Speaker, Kay Rundle: As CEO of one of the top 10 City Councils in Australia, Kay Rundle considers that one of her top priorities is to be a good listener. The City of Greater Geelong has an annual budget of 180 million.
Kay’s focus is to develop a cohesive community, the outcomes of which are a sense of belonging, social connectedness and increased social capital. Key elements that need to be developed to strengthen social capital are engagement, trust and solidarity - being involved and working for and with others. Volunteering is an indicator of social capital.
Council has initiated programs such as Street Life – Communities In Action (CIA) in Corio and Whittington.
Increased responsiveness of council is also a priority with reduced divisions within the structure of the organisation, calls being answered promptly and returned by the appropriate officers.
Structure plans for townships are being developed with consideration given to the green spaces between townships, leisure needs, council boundaries and controlled development. Kay encourages members to voice their concerns to council.
