Guest Speaker, Bob Davis: 1957 Best and Fairest for Geelong, 1958 All Australian Team Captain, Victorian Team Captain and Captain of Geelong, coach from 1960 – 1965, including night premiership in 1961 and premiership in 1963, Bobby Davis spoke colourfully of his life, beginning with the words “How lucky you can be to join in with a club, and have them look after you for the rest of your life”.
In 1933, Bob’s father, a barber, rode out to Clunes to set up shop and begin life in this small community. He soon made an impression in the town and was successful in many areas, including bookmaking. Bob was sent to boarding school in Ballarat following the death of his mother, where he literally stayed from 1939-46. St Patricks College had not lost a game in 51 years and in 1946 Bob playing for Ballarat College was confident of a win. His father backed him with 300 pounds and Ballarat lost by three points!
Bob decided to go and play for South Melbourne and went down for a run uninvited. He was promptly rejected after stating that he was there to ‘save South Melbourne’, not once but three times before he had a chance to prove himself. Later it was Bob’s turn to reject South Melbourne when he was spotted by the scouts at the Eastern oval.
In 1948 he was recruited to Geelong and traveled in a taxi to training and to games from Ballarat, stopping at the Elaine Hotel for a three course lunch on the way to the Saturday games! There were finals in 51, the flag in 52 and the team started to gather momentum, wining 26 matches in a row at one stage.
After an invitation to ‘talk about the footy’ on channel seven with Geoff Raymond, Bob began his career in the media, though he claims he has never had a ‘real’ job. He later returned to Geelong to coach the team in 1960.
