Bulletin No. 24

Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove Inc
Volume 24 No. 24
Notice for the meeting at the Ocean Grove Hotel Bistro on 20th December – 6.30 for 7.00.

Our annual Xmas dinner and party. A purely informal evening, but let us give Geoff Ford a spell from the registration desk and his and the assistant cashier’s duties can be taken by any member who does not turn up with a partner.
Remember that this is an official partners’ function, and you will be registered to attend, with your partner, unless you lodge an apology with Hans, no later than mid-day, Monday 19th December

Birthdays and Anniversaries

Geoff Brentnall, 24th, Jesus of Nazareth, 25th, Colin Brown, 28th, .[printed here because otherwise, he would miss out on the announcement by the Sergeant!]… The same goes for JC.

Coming Events

This is my penultimate bulletin for 2005 and the last will be conveyed to you on the night of the Christmas party. There will be no meeting on 27th December, and the first meeting in 2006, 3rd January, will be back in our usual venue. That will be a casual night at the OG Hotel and the following Tuesday, 10th January will be on the beach with partners, children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. JC will provide more details at the Xmas function, but it’s a 6 PM start.

The famous annual George garden party will be held on 31st January.

Extracts from the DG’s Newsletter

Insurance update - Amendments to the Rotary Insurance Policy to cover Sexual abuse/assault incidents at Rotary events.
The Rotary Australia insurance policies have now been amended to provide cover for legal liability arising out of sexual and/or child assault, abuse or molestation.. In simple terms, this provides cover up to $500,000 for clubs and their members if such an incident occurs at a Rotary event and the victim[s] or their family commences some form of court proceedings for damages. It should be noted that it does not provide cover for any person who commits such an act. No insurance cover is provided for any event that breaches the law or legislation.
The excess for any claim in relation to this cover is $50,000. Any queries should be directed to District Insurance officer Trevor Slater.
Ed comment. I see this as a potential bonanza for the legal profession. We should shudder at the possibility of any such action being brought against us. The action would probably fail, but the defence would be very expensive. The ‘ excess’ would break this Club. Thank God for incorporation!

Organ Donor Awareness

There has been a marked increase in registrations, and the DG extends congratulations to all concerned. Consultation within families is essential if internal objections are to be avoided

RC of Queenscliffe

The DG has reported glowingly on the presentation of the Charter in the company of the 18 charter members and 180 guests on September 30.
Ed. comment: I wonder how many exchanges or make-ups there have been between our two clubs in the almost three months since then. A significant ‘lapse’ between mother and daughter?.

Membership and attendance report for September

There are 61 clubs in our District. With an average attendance of 65.65% for the three months to 30/9/05, we were 43rd. [Can’t wait to see what difference the new hotel chef has on those results!]

Nature is Beautiful

Jan and I, together with our two little dogs, set off on our daily walk around Begola Wetlands on a recent evening, and stumbled across a pretty little mother tortoise, desperately trying to dig a hole for her eggs in very hard ground, at least 100 metres from the lake. It had been a long and uphill battle for her, so I picked her up and gently carried her, upside down, to softer earth near the waters edge.
On the way, she very gently laid three beautiful off-white eggs into Jan’s hand, which we buried for her in soft but protected soil near the water. Mother tortoise then went for a swim and laid one last egg in the water. Nature being what it is, she will abandon her babies, but we hope they hatch and survive. A magic experience!

The end of a very successful project, The Barwon Heads Walkway.

Community Service chairman John Wynn reported on a project which will go down in our Club’s history as one of the truly great community service projects undertaken by this club. Surely, the best seaside walkway in this area, and a great credit to all those who took part. Emailed photos to PC owners have been posted in hard copy to all other members.

Any Bulletin Editor what goes to Rotary without a pen is a dill!

Alison left her handbag at home and most of my other table companions were writing raffle tickets. My memory is failing , but this is a bit of wot went on:……………..I think.

• We are playing cricket with little bats sometime, but more in Jan.
• Next Tuesdays Xmas party in the pub bistro is at 6.30 4 7, & will cost us $20 p.h.
• The beach party on 10/1 will cost us $40 per fam.
• Fred Andrews new address is 14 Battersea Rise. {Sounds like a pommy address]
• There’s more, but I forget.
End bit

A duck walks into a chemist’s. “Give us a jar of Vaseline”, it quacks.
“That’ll be five dollars’, says the chemist, without batting an eye.
“Put it on my bill, please”………..”Certainly sir. Anything else?”
“Yeah, give me a packet of condoms, too”……..”Yes sir. Shall I put them on your bill?”
“No thanks. I’m not that kind of duck.”
