Jan Howard
Jan flies out of Tulla at 7.30 AM on 20th January, joining up with about 40 other outward exchange students to Sydney, then, flying South African Airlines via Perth to Johannesburg and thence to Sao Paulo in Brazil. From there, it is about a day’s journey west to her host club at Tupa.
What an adventure for a 17 y.o. lass who has never previously been out of Oz! She has completed year 11 at Bellarine Secondary College and will return to face year 12 at the end of her 12 months in Brazil.
Tupa is a town,[?] of about 90,000, north-west of Sao Paulo. The nearest city is Marilia and Tupa’s longitude is about 22 degrees north latitude, just north of the tropic of Capricorn, which puts it the equivalent of Winton in central Queensland, and in line with Mackay. My atlas actually shows Tupa, on the rail link with Sao Paulo. Further west is Paraguay.
Jan expects to be hosted by three families, and at least the first host family speaks English. Portuguese is the national tongue. Jan’s email address is janny_111@hotmail.com
She will need to check if this is OK in Brazil, and if so, I will email the weekly bulletin and will keep you informed of her adventures. Please note there is an upper case _ between the y & 1
Jan has asked me to convey to you all, her thanks for our support and sponsorship.
Next meeting------ 3rd Jan, casual at the usual venue, then, on the beach for the 10th.
New Year Honours RBA’s [Rotary Bulletin Accolades] to:
Jo Hawthorne Jo has only lived in this community five minutes but she is currently serving a two-year term as President of the Ocean Grove and District Community Association, a job of enormous responsibility and impact in this community, which Peter reckons occupies Jo for about 25 hours per week. Ask Jo to do something, and it gets done.
Geoff Ford It is dangerous to single out an individual Rotarian, as there are many contributors in our club. But, in my opinion, Geoff is the perfect example of the quiet achiever who is always there, with a smile, and who always delivers. He is surely 90% of the car raffle, which was the second highest fund-raiser last year, and he is just about our permanent receptionist.
There are no badges or other decorations for those two, only our gratitude and admiration.
The Sixth Day of Christmas
WE had 33 members, 37 partners, guests and visiting Rotarians, [including 6 from the RC of Queenscliffe], twelve drummers drumming, eleven pipers piping, ten lords a leaping, nine ladies dancing, eight maids a milking, seven swans a swimming, six geese a laying, five golden rings, four birds calling, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree. Fair dinkum.
Geoff Brentnell was awarded a well-deserved Paul Harris Fellowship, and we donated $300 to the St. Vincent de Paul charity. JC deserved our accolades for a beaut night, and so did the pub.
End Bit
‘To perceive Christmas through its wrapping becomes more difficult with every year.’
