Rotary Basics No. 2 The Organization of Rotary

Rotary is essentially a grassroots organization, with most of its service efforts carried out at club level.
The district and international structure is designed to support the clubs and help them provide more service in their communities and abroad.
CLUBS Rotarians are members of Rotary clubs, which belong to the global association – Rotary International. Each club elects its own officers and enjoys considerable autonomy within the framework of Rotary’s constitution and bylaws.
DISTRICTS Clubs are grouped into 529 RI districts, each led by a district governor, who is an officer of RI. The district administration, including assistant governors and various committees, guides and supports the clubs.
RI BOARD The 19-member RI Board of Directors, which includes the RI president and president-elect, meets quarterly to establish policies. Traditionally, the RI president, who is elected annually, develops a theme and emphasis for the year.
THE SECRETARIAT Rotary International is headquartered in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, USA, with seven international offices in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Korea and Switzerland. The RI in Great Britain and Ireland [RIBI] office in England, serves clubs and districts in that region. The Secretariat’s active managing officer is the RI general secretary, who heads a staff of about 600 people working to serve Rotarians worldwide.

More wicked wisdom

Assassination The most extreme form of censorship.
Astronauts Rotarians in outer space.
Audiences Coughing bastards
Australia A country lying in the South Seas whose industrial and commercial development has been unspeakably retarded by an unfortunate dispute among geographers as to whether it is a continent or an island.

The RC of Melbourne was the first in Australia, but only by accident!

Canadian Rotarians James Davidson and Layton Ralston were appointed as honorary commissioners to introduce Rotary to the antipodes in 1921, and arrived in Sydney on March 22, and found it ‘closed’, due to the annual holiday to mark the week of the Royal Easter Show. Nothing daunted, they went on to Melbourne to meet Walter Drummond, who had been promoting Rotary for Australia since 1914, and as a result, the RC of Melbourne was chartered on 21st April with 37 members.
The charter members included three Knights of the Realm – Sir John Gellibrand [chief of police], General Sir John Monash [Administrator, SEC] and Sir Robert Gibson. The list included the top men of the city, but not Wally Drummond. That poor bugger was not considered of sufficient seniority in his firm to be invited to membership, but was given the ‘honour’ of the office of honorary secretary. [ He was eventually elected to membership in September]

Auction/ Progressive dinner, Saturday 11th February 2006

Still about four weeks off, but John Calnin urgently requires advice from any member who can provide items for auction. All proceeds to our charities acc. Please give this careful thought and advise JC asap.
The function will cost $30 per person and guests will be welcome. It will start at the Calnins at 6.00.

They come real tough at the RC of OG.

A little bit of inclemency wasn’t going to put us off enjoying JC’s beach party last night. The baked spuds were a great success, and they even moved the Franken lad to make a quality comparison with last week’s meal at the pub! Simple tastes has our Hans.
The surf events were undoubtedly the highlight of a very athletic evening. Without doubt, the loudest applause was for Bob Osbourne’s effort on the four metre surf ski, riding the 2.5 metre swell into the beach with Shirley riding shot-gun on the stern. John Dodgshun’s win in the 100 metre body surf event was probably equally impressive, but personally, I thought that the ‘hands tied behind the back’ trick was just a bit over the top. I will remember Coral Barker’s 2.5 somersault with a full twist on the bounce castle. Just as well she was wearing slacks!
There were numerous Rotarians, lotsa visitors, [or relatives] and a host of children.
Bob Jordan, CEO of Barwon Coast, congratulated the Club on the Barwon Walkway project.

End Bit

An Australian tourist was booking into a pub in Ireland.
“Will you have a room with a bath or a shower?” asked the receptionist.
The Aussie, considering his budget, asked what was the difference.
“Well,” said the receptionist, “with a shower, you stand up”

Ed. note ; I wish to remind Alex that this is an Australian joke, rather than Irish!
