A reminder about Anzac Day

John Calnin and his Anzac Day breakfast team urge Rotarians and their partners [and other family members] to attend the Dawn Service at the Ocean Grove Cenotaph at 6.15 am.
JC reckons he has adequate support for the breakfast project, but pop into the neighbourhood centre on your way in case re-inforcements are required.
……………………………

I make no apologies for reminding you, once again, about weekly duties.

Geoff Ford and/or Norm Elliott man the door every week. Too often, they are left without an assistant cashier or a greeter. On average, the other members might expect to be rostered for either job on no more than four occasions each year. If you can’t make it as rostered, and are too busy to find a replacement, phone me, [FOXY, 52551675] and I will either do your duty or find someone else. If you are going on leave or otherwise have leave of absence, let me know! Nobody else will.

Application for membership at St. Andrews [R & A] Golf Club.

A Scottish Jew who had worked hard all his life in Scotland decided that he would like to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, so he went to exclusive St. Andrews to apply for membership. Told about proposers, seconders etc. he was also informed that his application would have to be approved by the membership committee. Subsequently, he received a letter of rejection, so he went back to find out why!
He was asked, ”You’re Jewish, aren’t you?”. “Aye, but I’m as Scottish as you are, Jock”.
“Well, you understand that we wear nothing under our kilts”. “Aye, I know that”.
“And being Jewish, you must be circumcised”. “Aye, and I am that”.
“Well, the committee decided that it would not be acceptable for a circumcised man parading around with us”.
“Och, away with ye man,” he cried. “I know I must be a Protestant to march in the Orangeman’s parade, and a Catholic to belong to the Knights of Columbus, but this is the first time I’ve heard that a man has to be a complete prick to be a Scotsman”.

The last two of the RI programs

World Community Service
Rotary clubs and districts from two different countries form partnerships to implement community service projects. [e.g. Our partnership with Southampton for the Fijian project]
Menu of Service Opportunities
RI recommends that clubs planning service activities consider nine major needs or concerns.
Children at Risk, Disabled Persons, Health Care, International Understanding and Goodwill, Literacy and Numeracy, Population Issues, Poverty and Hunger, Preserve Planet Earth, and Urban Concerns.

New Centurian Challenge

DG Wayne advises that the response from Rotarians within District 9780 to the Rotary foundation through the Centurian system.has been excellent with 121 Rotarians having donated the minimum of $100aus.p.a. Geelong West is the leading club with 11 new Centurians, Drysdale next with 5. [I think Ocean Grove has 1]
Wayne reminds us that in three years time, 50% of what is donated to the Rotary Foundation is returned to our District for use in local projects.
There are no administration costs, [surely a unique situation in the charity field], and all donations are tax deductible.
Donations for this Rotary year should be forwarded by May 31st to PP Bob Pullin, district chairman of the Foundation, at 6 Roycroft Avenue, Highton, 3216. Foxy can be the postman if you wish.

The Hawthornes of Kerang

It is great to have a member reminisce about a family history that goes back to 1851 in this Country. Of a family store in a country town for 123 years with the same family. Of an involvement in such diverse fields as the gold rush and State Parliament. Agnes McColl and David Hawthorne started the dynasty in retailing, and it wasn’t all retailing, because they had 13 children.
Our Peter told us of those magic, overhead air-propelled cylinders of dockets and cash between counter and office, of coupons and wartime rationing and gas producers and dust-storms and rural development and the disastrous Kerang township fire of 29th November 1954. Thank you Peter—well presented!
