Coming up- a really exciting and cultural event
JC, our social guru and entrepreneur, has announced the final event in this Rotary year’s social calendar.
It will take the form of a movie afternoon at the Leopold theatrette on Sunday 28th May at 3.00pm. The precise address will be advised in due course, just in case there is an A-bomb attack or earthquake in the meantime. The cost is $10 each and the theatrette is one of those intimate venues and the max. accommodation is 48, so early bookings are essential.
The film is ‘Sleeping Camels’ which, we are assured, is a much better film than the title indicates!
But that’s not all.
Afterwards, we adjourn to the Italian Club in Moolap for a meal and, [wait for it!] a dance! But if you are not up to ‘tripping the light fantastic’, the Triggs and the Birrells will give an exhibition!! Fresh from their recent triumphs in that TV extravaganza, ‘Dancing with the Planets’, these talented ‘hoofers’ would normally command a very large fee, but which, because of Rotary, has been waived.
You have two weeks to get your paid reservation to JC, no later than Tues. 16th May.
Last night’s meeting with the Mayor of COGG, Cr Peter McMullin.
Peter, resident of Barwon Heads and a former Rotarian, is also chairman of the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Your bulletin editor would like to have heard more about that.
Peter talked about the bridge, the potential Target store in OG, of traffic and parking problems, the Geelong by-pass, the Bellarine Aquatic Centre, soccer pitches in Shell Rd., the Bellarine Peninsular Strategic Plan, the Pt. Lonsdale ‘Stocklands’ project and the possible relocation of the Geelong Yacht Club. Peter proved to be a fluent speaker and a consummate politician.
We never got to have that walk-way barbeque!
I expect you have all forgotten that I suggested, back in January, that we should have a grand opening BBQ at the Barwon Heads Bluff walkway. It never happened, but I am still determined to attempt publicity in ‘Rotary Down Under’,
I intend, with John Wynn’s help, to write an appropriate article, accompanied by photographs, but I would like to include in the photos, as many members as can turn up for the photo-shoot, which I have decided will be at 5.00 PM on Sunday 14th May, on site.
I fully expect that numbers will be limited because of holidays, leave of absence, illness, fear of heights, work commitments, friends for dinner, going out for dinner,’ not wishing to have me foto took’ don’t know how to find it, can’t afford the petrol, bike tyres need pumping up, the wife won’t let me, hubby won’t let me, can’t be bothered, didn’t read the bulletin, never read the bulletin, and simply, forgot!
I did a dummy run on a sunny afternoon last week, but the only sign of life was two lovers and my dog, and none of them were Rotarians. The two plaques look great and are unvandalised. I hope a few of you will turn up on 14/5/06 at 1700 hours.

HELLO FROM SOUTHAMPTON [A verbatim extract from a 1st May e-mail from Keith Nixon]
“I have sent out a flyer by e-mail to RC Southampton Rotarians and will be hand-delivering the remaining to those who do not have Internet. I expect, by this Wednesday, I should have a good idea as to how many are interested in the first leg of the friendship exchange in Ocean Grove. So far, I have expressions of interest from 9 [4 couples and 1 single], including Judy and me. I have also had three couples who, while they are not able to travel, have expressed a keen interest in hosting Ocean Grove Rotarians, and partners, where applicable, the following summer[‘07].
The key to a visit to Australia will be the cost of the flight and I would like to get at least another three committed so that we can work out a group rate.
While we are aiming at January, we may opt for a few weeks later if it’s a cheaper go. Some others, including Judy and me, wish to have a stop over in New Zealand, Hawaii, Fiji, etc. I will leave it in the hands of my travel agent, once I have the final numbers on Wednesday.
I will send you a very brief profile of the folks who have expressed interest at that time. I hope there will be a number of Rotarians who would like to host some pretty nice folks from Canada! We, in turn, will put on the afterburners and, during our stay, provide information on a video of our neck of the woods to entice a number of Ocean Grovers [is that the term?] to return to Canada.
I hope this sounds like a plan, John, and I will keep you posted as things progress [with success, I hope]. Please advise if there is any hesitation on hehalf of your members.” End
Now then, you ‘Grovers’, please advise John Fox if you are interested in
A Visiting Southampton, and if so, B When, and C For how long
D. Regardless of the above, are you prepared to host our Canadian visitors in Jan. or Feb. 2007 ??
Three of our members have already expressed interest in going, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be in 2007. It is not like a Group Study Exchange. We don’t have to commit to a rigid plan at this stage. Foxy
