Richard Grimmett is our 24th President
In the warm and social ambience of the Barwon Heads Golf Clubhouse last night, Richard James Grimmett was inducted as our newest, and possibly our youngest club President.
Born 11th January 1964, [don’t get out the calculator, he’s 42], at Albury, Richard is very much a newcomer to Rotary, having joined our club in 2003, but he is far from being a newcomer to the concept of Service Clubs, as he was a member of the Ocean Grove Apex Club for 10 years and served that club as President in 1996/97.
Richard was educated at the Dimboola Memorial High School, and is now a principal of Bellarine Memories, married to Heather. He has served our club as director of Club Service and Bulletin Editor.
He plans to chair a board meeting on the second Tuesday in each month, and will submit regular newsletters to this publication.

It was a great night
Guests included Past President Henry Hudson and Isobel, Bill and Queenie Penna, both couples from our sponsored club of Queensciffe, local member Lisa Neville, and representatives of Lions. Helen was supported by Past President Richard. It would be hard to beat the Barwon Heads Golf Club for the venue of such a significant night in the history of our club.
Lisa Neville spoke warmly of the contribution of Rotary to our community, particularly in our initiative with the defibrillator project and other local projects. Predictably, Rod Birrell stole the show with his hilarious ‘call of the card’ for a mythical Melbourne Cup. [ we never did get to hear who won], and past president and past District Governor Henry Hudson responded eloquently to the toast to Rotary International.
Helen Trigg bowed out in style
In her outgoing report, Helen referred to the support she received from her Board, to the various prominent projects undertaken during her year and to her appreciation for the support she received from all of the members. It was a very classy and sophisticated evening, very ably chaired by vice-President John Calnin.
My memories of Helen’s year as our President.
I will remember that year for her style and her ’presence’, for her eloquence, her warmth and her caring. Well done, Helen. I will retain memories of Rod Birrell, surely our best Sergeant-at-Arms ever, even with his constant victimization of poor Webbie, of JC’s excellent but strangely poorly attended social functions, of John Wynn’s spectacular Barwon Heads Walk, of our meeting venue over the last twelve months, where I reckon we had the use of both the best and the worst of our many eating locales and the best and worst of the meals. [Nothing like variety, eh?]. They are my main recollections of a pretty good year in top company. What are yours?

Martin Geerings is our 28th Paul Harris Fellow. [ in our 28th year of membership of RI !
Martin has been a very active member of our club for 16 years and has served Rotary in a great variety of roles during his devoted commitment to Rotary service in this community. His appointment as our latest PHF was warmly applauded by all those present at last nights meeting, including a standing ovation from the 14 past recipients of this prestigious award.

An accolade for our very own Webbie.
How many of you know that John Webb is the current President of the prestigious Barwon Heads Golf Club? He has been a member for 37 years and is a past club champion, currently lamenting his handicap ‘blowing out’ to 5. Wot a bugger!!
Traditionally, Webbie will probably serve the club as president for two straight years and currently attends the club for the benefit of its 1750 members at least once every day. At least he now lives within walking distance of the clubhouse. *******************
And whilst I am talking about accolades, how about Past President Tim Kemp?
I had to cajole, bully, and constantly remind him of his promise to give me copy for the bulletin in relation to his truly outstanding job as Assistant District Governor during this last twelve months. But I finally got it!
What a fantastic effort to have attended 131 functions in a year! I believe that to be a record which will never be broken. A commitment to the wide family of Rotary in this district of 61 clubs. No-one thought to mention this tonight, and Tim would not expect it, but I sure hope that the DG appreciates what a great contribution to the district Tim has made.
I have had a lot to drink tonight, but if the gods of computerisation are with me, his report, which I urge you to read, is an attachment.

Of growing old
Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.
The first patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week.
The second sees his family doctor after waiting a week for an appointment, then waits eighteen weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn’t reviewed for another month and finally has his surgery scheduled for a year from then.
Why the different treatment for these two patients?
The first is a Golden Retriever, the second is a Senior Citizen!!
