Anne Brown must be a collector, and I am a grateful recipient.
Anne has lent me Vol.18 No. 921 of ‘The Bulletin’, published in Sydney on Saturday, October 9, 1897, and a reproduction of ‘The Age’ Vol. 1 No. 1., dated October 17 ,1854
They are rather hard to read, understandably so after more than a century, but there is a Pandora’s Box of absolutely super stuff to reproduce and I will bring you excerps over the next few months. Those extracts will not be edited. Far be it for me to interfere with the journalistic expertise of the Bulletin or the Age!! The original price of each was sixpence [5c]

Extracts from the DG’s Newsletter
Out of the 61 clubs in our Rotary District, 6 have 15 members or less, and there are 3 with 75 or more. As of tonight, we have 46, which is better than the district average of 36.
Not so good is our average attendance, which was a bit under 65% at the last count, which put us 45th in the district. But then, the true figure could be better or worse, because 11 clubs didn’t report numbers at all!
There is a Group Study Exchange with Siberia this year, inward arriving 5th Feb. and departing 9th March, but due to attend the Warrnambool conference, first weekend in March. Our team arrives Siberia 3rd May, home 5th June.

Whatever happened to Common Sense?
Today, we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.
No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, ‘why the early bird gets the worm’, ‘life isn’t fair’, and ‘maybe it was my fault’.
Common sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, [don’t spend more than you earn] and reliable parenting strategies, [adults, not children, are in charge]. PTO
His health began to deteriorate rapidly after well intentioned reports of a six year old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or sticking plaster to a student, but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live when criminals received better treatment than their victims and took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and he could sue you for assault. Common sense finally gave up the will to live when a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, and was awarded a huge settlement when she spilt a bit in her lap.
We miss him, because, if he was still about, he might have told those footballers to stay on the bus and to keep their mouths shut. And he would surely have told those teenagers at Werribee that committing a serious crime is sure to be discovered if they put it on film. I wonder how he died?
Some of the foregoing has been ‘pirated’ from the bulletin of the RC of Footscray, and I am grateful to Noel Emselle. ******************************

This Day Tonight
One of the features of this very enjoyable social function was the induction, by District Governor Andrew Suggett, assisted by President Richard, of Suzy Mann, Ben Israel, Dennis Sanders and Ken Fleay, [ transferred from Ballarat East]. We will hear more of their background over the coming weeks.
District Governor Andrew then addressed the club on the occasion of his official visit, [ about halfway through 61 clubs]. He referred to World President Bill Boyd’s challenge for 1.2 million Rotarians throughout the world to ‘Lead the way’, and for all of us to follow his personal challenge to ‘Enjoy Rotary’.
Andrew expressed sobering reflections on the devastating impact of the drought, not only within our Rotary district, but throughout the whole country. He also spoke eloquently of the aims and ideals of Rotary and the introduction of the ‘Club Leadership Plan’, probably the first major change to administration policies in 100 years.
Finally, Andrew reminded us of the District Conference to be held in his home town of Warrnambool from 2 to 4 March 2007. It will be the best conference ever, and if you havn’t yet registered, contact Foxy real urgent!!
