Hear, hear
Three old guys are out walking together:
The first one says, “Windy, isn’t it?”
To which the second one responds, “No, it’s Thursday”.
And the third one says “So am I. Let’s have a beer”. I hope that doesn’t strike too close to home!

The Rotary Foundation. [ Extracts from a report of the D9780 annual giving sub-committee.]
The number of Centurians [$100 donation to the Foundation] in our district is now over 620,- 7 from OG, and has the potential to add at least US$46,600 to the Annual Programs Fund.
The Foundation invests contributions to the APF for three years and uses the interest to cover its administrative costs and augment its income. The original investment is then split 50/50 between the World Fund and our District Designated Fund. The District can then use its half on selected humanitarian and educational programs with up to 20% available through District Simplified Grants to assist clubs in developing projects serving their own local communities.
Our District 9780 has contributed $2.1M to the Foundation, has had 1326 Paul Harris Fellows, 88 Paul Harris Sustaining Members and 28 Benefactors. We have sponsored 62 Matching Grants, 42 Scholars and been involved in 37 Group Study Exchanges.
Regular Weekly Duties
Suzy Mann has asked me to explain the duties of rostered Rotarians, both for her own and Ben Israel’s benefit. I thought that it would do no harm to cover the main points for everyone, not because I am an authority on the subject, but because I have experienced those duties more than most members.
Chairmen are generally matched to speakers, but Assistant Cashiers & Thankers, and Greeters & Assistant Sergeants are rostered from amongst those members who do not have continuing duties. It is essential that all three of those members arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes before the start of the meeting. The chairman must welcome the speaker on arrival, and the other two have obvious duties. In particular, visiting Rotarians should be especially welcomed by the Greeter, who also hands out the dinner plaques and makes out make-up cards, and either Geoff Ford or Norm Elliott need the cash handling of the Assistant Cashier. Any rostered member who cannot guarantee to arrive by 6.00 PM will be excused duty, but the bulletin editor must be advised in advance.
The Thanker has the added responsibility of expressing the Club’s appreciation to the speaker at the conclusion of the address, and must liaise closely with the chairman and also obtain the presentation gift from the Secretary. The Assistant Sergeant carries the mace and the fines box and needs to be fairly quick on his/her feet. Fines by the A.S. are optional. Mentors for new members should follow-up on these suggestions.

News in brief
• Coral Barker, with her quiet persuasive voice, got us to lift our dinner fee to $20 [11.11% increase] before we knew what hit us!
• There are currently 103 S.C’s coming to next weeks Chrissie dinner. Drivers beware.
• Foxy has registration forms for the 2-4 March 2007 District Conference at Warrnambool.
• Defibrillator training is available at Bellarine Memories on Thursday 7th Dec commencing 7.00 PM. The venue is suitable for the pessimists, the optimists will be comforted by the nearby party hire, just three doors north. Contact Wal Kelly for registration. [either way]
• John Webb has leave of absence until 30/6/2007, Ken Wyatt until 31/12/2006.
Rotary by the Numbers
There are 32,596 Rotary clubs worldwide, catering for 1,221,812 Rotarians, but since the average is three new members every 30 minutes, there will be a hellavalot more by the time you read this. That’s an average of 37.5 members per club, so we are a bit above average.
Tonight’s meeting
I have three pages of shorthand notes, but as you probably know, my PC, known to me as FRED, can’t cope with verbosity, so this is a condensation of a prĂ©cis!
John Mazloum is our chef, but he hails from a family of 11, with, collectively, 60 offspring, [there may be more by the time you get to read this], so they have all been fairly busy. Mine was a very noisy table tonight, and I may have missed a bit, but I did get snippets, which included, I think, references to the Richmond Football Club, a French restaurant in South Yarra, Steve Martin, Toto’s in Carlton, [I think Coral Barker and Alex Magee were there, but not necessarily together], sundry Hollywood Stars, Deborah Hutton, [not, I believe, in Hollywood at the time] and Kylie Minogue.
John spent two years in Germany, did a ripper of an impersonation of Rocky, has marketed marble, and loves all young, attractive women, none of whom he ever discarded intentionally. He is [Good God, did I forget to tell you?], Lebanese, but despairs of his country. He would like to set up a restaurant in OG, modeled on ‘Three Hats’, with Paul Becuse as assistant chef. [Bookings three months in advance].
Of course, I speak in jest, but John was a breath of fresh air, as entertaining a speaker as we have had, at a meeting chaired by our newest member, Ben Israel, who truly excelled in that role.
