If I was a dog, I would want to attain the rank of GUIDE DOG!

Colleen Knowles, supported by golden labrador Oban, gave a fascinating, informative and entirely engrossing talk on the life and times of the Guide Dog programme in this country. Colleen has another interesting story in her repertoire as she has walked the Walls of China twice. Once for 47kms and then for 75!!
Potential members of this exclusive canine society are let out to eager volunteers for initial indoctrination as puppies, taken to shopping malls, church etc., to test their suitability for the grueling training to follow. But after 10 months as a trainee, these puppies have to be handed back for the real training regime. [I could never bear to part company with a liitle fella, but one person has done it 28 times].

The total cost per graduate dog is about $25,000, but the training is intense and rigorous and the reliance by the master on the dog is complete. Elaine Elliott asked the best of many questions, when she queried why Oban didn’t react to the commands used by Colleen to demonstrate her talk. Simple, Colleen didn’t have her hand on the ‘lead’ handle, and hence, Oban knew she wasn’t on duty. Remarkable
