Now THAT was real public relations
The Anzac Day Dawn Service attracted a record crowd on a beautiful clear and calm morning, and our club members can be justly proud of the contribution we made on several fronts. Prominent amongst our contributions was the excellent breakfast provided by a team led by John Calnin, and including Carole & Rod Birrell, Marion & Bill Walton, Coral Barker, Fred Andrews, David Cooke, Hans Franken, Paul Gleeson, Bill Steains, David Tyrrell and John Webb. One of the above is officially on leave of absence, and another is not yet a Rotarian, but about to be inducted. To get on the list for this much-sought-after duty, you have to put your name down twelve months ahead!
Favorable mention of our club was made three times by the RSL President, before, during and after the ceremony at the cenotaph, and again at the breakfast. We were very well led by President Richard. This, together with our Xmas dinner for the elderly citizens, is clearly the best form of public relations

Distorted Nursery Rhyme No. IV
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King’s horses, and all the King’s men,
Had scrambled eggs for breakfast again. I reckon my proof reader will pass that one!

Sports commentator slip-ups
“Sure, there have been deaths in boxing, but none of them serious”. [Alan Minter]
“I owe a lot to my parents, especially my father and mother”. [Greg Norman]
“One of the reasons Arnie [Arnold Palmer] is playing so well is that before each tee shot his wife takes out his balls and kisses them. Oh my God ! What have I just said ?!!! [US PGA commentator]
Today was May Day
1st May, a day of traditional springtime celebration, probably associated with pre-Christian fertility rites. Traditional activities include processions carrying garlands, the naming of a May King or Queen, and dancing around a maypole. May Day was designated an international labour day by the International Socialist congress of 1889.

Induction [tonight] of Paul Gleeson
ADG Alan Ollis assisted President Richard to induct Paul and Julie Gleeson into our club. Paul is a teacher of English as a second language, mainly to migrants at the North Geelong Secondary College. He has also taught at several local schools and had a stint in the Northern Territory. Two children. His enthusiasm for Rotary was obvious, and we welcome him warmly.

The Barwon Heads Bridge rated only a very brief mention
Guest Speaker Rtn.Duncan Elliott was a very canny and eloquent speaker to avoid getting too deeply into the already muddied waters under the BH bridge. Vicroads has an area of responsibility covering 230,000 square kms., which is only 3% of Aussie area, but 24% of the population. We have in Vic. 4.4M. reg’d vehicles, and Vicroads is responsible for the annual expenditure of billions in construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and infrastructure, employing 2,500 staff.
Young drivers represent a disproportionate % of accidents, three times the norm. There are heavier penalties ahead, but our road toll has come down dramatically, and by world standards, is well under control.
P-platers may, in future, have first to do 120 hours on L plates.
As often happens with a good speaker on a topical subject, the 90 minutes for our rostered programme was insufficient!

A filler
No matter how grouchy you’re feeling,
A smile is always quite healing;
It grows like a wreath, all around the front teeth,
Thus preserving the face from congealing. The RI President’s message will have to wait until next week!
