The worst bulletin

I sent off last Tuesday’s bulletin without first referring it my proof reader. Subsequently, she classified it as my worst! ‘The Golfing Nun’ story was too long, too irrelevant, in poor taste, and not particularly funny. Furthermore, in the report about Barbara Peek, it is ‘Uniting’ Church, not United. I have sulked ever since.

So, you don’t know what a ‘shelter box’ is? [This day tonight, 25/47]

Shelter Box provides shelter and warmth for up to 10 people for a prolonged period. Each box is uniform in size and normally contains a 10 person tent, 10 sleeping bags, a multi fuel cooker and ancillary equipment such a water purification tablets, a torch and batteries, spade, rope, plastic bags etc. The basics a family would need after losing everything in a disaster.
The contents can and are varied when requests are received from Aid agencies or when being sent to tropical climates such as South-East Asia. The sleeping bags are often replaced with an extra tent and equipment for an additional 10 people, in that case providing accommodation for up to 20 people.
All organizations and individuals who sponsor a Shelter Box are advised of the Shelter Box Number and are issued with a certificate and banner and are advised of its final destination. The sponsor’s name is placed within the Shelter Box and their name is placed on the Roll of Honour on the shelter box website: www.shelterbox.btinternet.co.uk/
The cost is A$1200, but donations of less than $1200 are welcome and can be used for individual items.
You know you are living in 2007 when…………..

• You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.
• Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don’t have e-mail addresses.
• You pull up in your driveway and use your mobile phone to see if someone inside can help you with the groceries.

Anam Cara [Soul Friend] House

Diane Wright was our guest speaker tonight, and clearly, the ‘mover and shaker’ for this notable project to provide the Geelong community with excellence in respite and end of life care within a home-like environment; embracing respect and compassion for all people.
Arising from a public meeting in October 2003, the historic two-story Presbytery of St. Mary’s Basilica in Geelong has undergone extensive renovation to provide a six bed, fully staffed facility, due to be officially opened on 07/07/07. The full cost is estimated to be $600,000 before any bed is occupied, and the annual running cost will exceed $400,000. It is not intended to charge any fee to a patient, with a likely maximum stay of 12 days.
President Richard presented Diane with our donation of $1000.
Suzy Israel handled her maiden duty as ‘thanker’, with great charm and sincerity. Well done, Suzy.

Notice Board

• The Queenscliffe Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Uniting Church, will hold a ‘Christmas in Winter’ dinner and wine & hamper auction this Friday in the Uniting Church, Queenscliff, commencing 6.30pm. Phone 5258 1986 for a reservation.
• The RI Council on Legislation, [representatives from all 530 Rotary Districts], voted, at their April meeting, to reduce the required minimum % of meetings to be attended by a Rotarian in any period of six months from 60% to 50%. [RDU, June, 2007, p18]
• At the same meeting, the trustees were asked to reduce the minimum amount for Matching Grants from $5,000 to $2,500. If successful, this would mean that if we contributed $1,250 to a joint project, and our partner club did the same, RI would put in $2,500.
• The RI per capita dues will go up by 2%, -- less than inflation.
• The ‘Ocean Grove Voice’ is to be rejuvenated, but monthly, rather than weekly.
• Ken Fleay won the footy tipping, but Rod Greer got the prize, and Judy got on top??
• Vic Harnath gave us a slide show of the bowel scan project, and if you weren’t at the meeting, I’m not gunna describe it!. There were 549 kits distributed locally, and Vic was warmly congratulated for his efforts.
• Just in passing, Fordie, birthdays are announced for the coming week, not last week!!
