Geelong Friends of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

I mentioned at tonight’s meeting that this new organization has been formed to promote the Orchestra and to ensure that it continues to conduct five performances annually at the Costa Hall.
Several committee meetings have now been held, culminating in the distribution of several hundred brochures outlining the proposed activities of the ‘Friends’ during the next twelve months. The official launch will be held on 1st November as outlined in the brochure, and members joining by 24th October 2007, will be designated foundation members.
Those of my fellow Rotarians who lodged with me an application form with an initial subscription of $10 may re-apply using the revised application form which carries a full year’s subscription from 1/11/2007, and the amount already paid may be deducted from the single membership fee of $30, or the ‘couples’ fee of $50.
I am the honorary treasurer, and will ‘square off’ about that arrangement with the secretary, but those applications should be submitted to me with the appropriate sub.

At the scheduled conclusion of last Friday night’s concert, the MSO played a rousing rendition of Georges Bizet’s ‘Toreador’s Song’ from Carmen, a.k.a. the ‘Cats’ theme song

Patient “Is it common?” Doctor “Well, it’s not unusual.”

I know I’m OK, but I’m not too sure about you

John Lessor was our guest speaker tonight, and he reminded us that worldwide statistics reveal that one in four or five of us have some form of mental illness. Most of those illnesses are pretty harmless, but there are a lot that are not. There is probably more than one Martin Bryant out there! In a population of 21 million in Oz, one in four of us being ‘not quite right’, is scary.

John is the chairman of the Mental Health Review Board, made up of Psychiatrists, Lawyers and laymen with strong community interests. The legislative control rests with the Mental Health Act of 1986, constantly reviewed and amended, but probably in need of a re-write. The Board is an appeals and review process which has a huge responsibility, and is generally effective. The old-fashioned fearsome institutions which we commonly referred to as asylums have virtually disappeared, but there is still a disturbing problem.

John is one of up to 100 Churchill Fellowships awardees annually, who are granted 4-8 weeks overseas study tours.

Rotary Mottoes

The first motto of Rotary International, ‘He Profits Most Who Serves Best’, was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, in August 1911. The 1989 Council on Legislation established ‘Service Above Self’ as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish voluntary service.

Aren’t you glad you don’t rely on farming for your livelihood?

Jan and I recently traveled north to visit clients and friends, via Ballarat, Avoca, Birchip, Ouyen, Mildura, Robinvale and home via Wycheproof. Crops that were green and healthy just a few short weeks ago are dead or dying. Vine fruit properties in the Sunraysia district have been cut back to 5% of their irrigation water entitlement.

Lakes, such as Wendouree [which hosted the 1956 Olympic rowing events], are empty. You can walk across the Murray river in many places. Adelaide, which relies largely on the Murray for drinking water, is facing dire consequences of the most severe drought in Austalia’s history. There is no end in sight. Think of these people as you complain about our stage four water restrictions.
Desalination plants are only in the planning stage throughout Oz. Overseas countries have had them in use for years. Are we the lucky country, or just the stupid country?
