Club Assembly 13/11/07 revisited

Your editor is grateful to SecRod for submitting a two-page report of proceedings. Reprinted below, [verbatim] is his summary on each of the 4 points for discussion.

Youth Exchange.

Generally not supported. We appear not to have the 4-6 families ready to commit and there are broader issues with Exchange program. The type of student coming appears quite affluent and world wise. We could do well to review an Exchange program differently. Maybe shorter, or targeted to less financial kids. The existing program is , in our Club’s view not working as it was originally designed.

Non Apologies and Attendance

There is general consensus that if you don’t apologise and don’t attend then you should be sent an account and expect to pay. There is support for some sort of extreme circumstances, but that needs a final arbiter [probably President or possibly Board]. Issues of cut-off time being too far out from meal time and the Hotel needing to have some leeway in case of unexpected visitors.

Local Project

The picnic tables/rotunda is still on the agenda of many members. Some support for seeking community input into possible projects. Barwon Coast tasks are well supported as further options. The idea of a Boardwalk north of the OG Golf Club is a new idea and should get a look at. Grubb Road walking track, Kingston Park, walkathon, and several others which we are involved in but could wind up further were listed. PAD project is one we should not forget either.

Market Coordinator and future of Market

Yes, we can do it, but ‘not me’ appears to be part of the thinking. Skills required are not world shattering, just much of what got you into Rotary in the first place.

There are a few humdingers in this lot!

My brother-in-law gave me, for my birthday, a little 54 page pocket booklet titled ‘Instructions for American Servicemen in Australia 1942’ [A reproduction from the original]. Included in it are these examples of Australian slang. The following are reproduced exactly as they appear in the book.

Drogo rookie. Sheila a babe. Cliner another babe. Sninny a third babe. Shivoo a party .
Shikkered drunk. Chivvy back talk, lip. Plonk cheap wine. Smooge to pitch woo. [Fair dinkum!!]

Last night’s proceedings A report from my roving reporter ‘Algie’ Your editor was at a very late meeting

• Cindy Harrison-Roberts provided a very informative address about the causes and preventive measures of the coming fire season. Our town is not immune from the threat of bushfires, with many of our fringe areas being densely wooded.
• Our members who attended the dinner for RI President-Elect C K Lee reported a well attended and interesting evening.
• The visiting Sudanese choir will be our guests for a BBQ at ‘Carols in the Park’ on Sunday 16th December.
• Members are reminded that the District Conference will be held in Swan Hill from Friday 29th February to Sunday 2nd March. If you need further information or seek registration, contact our on-to-conference man Hans Franken.
