Anniversaries
3rd March Tony & Pam Haines [On this day in 1991, Rodney King was caught speeding in Los Angeles, and his subsequent kicking and beating by police resulted in a broken leg and numerous facial fractures. The police reported ‘cuts and bruises of a minor nature’, contradicted in a video filmed by a witness. Racial tensions erupted, and in three days of violent rioting, 55 people were killed and about 2000 wounded. A year later, the police concerned were convicted under federal U.S. law of violating Rodney King’s constitutional rights.] Ed. Comment. It could only happen in the U.S.of A

A Woman came home, screeching her car into the driveway, and ran into the house. She slammed the door and shouted at the top of her voice, ‘Honey, pack your bags. I won the lottery!”
Her husband responded, ”Oh my god! What should I pack, beach stuff or mountain stuff?” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “Just get out.” Contributed by Phil Edwards.

Birthdays & Aniversaries
6th March Dick Clay & Leone Clay. No, I haven’t made one of my rare mistakes. They share a common birthday, and it’s not unique in the annals of our club. Past president [1995/96] Gerry Spencer and his dear but recently departed wife Audrey shared a common birthday, also in March. I also hasten to assure you that I am well aware that Dick is not a Rotarian [yet].
Interesting to note that on this day in 1475, Michelangelo Buonarroti was born and in 1992, a new computer virus was discovered, dubbed the ‘Michelangelo’, and due to attack computers worldwide on his birthday. When the dreaded day arrived, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 computers were reported to be effected, not the predicted 5 million.
9th March Helen & Richard Trigg. Well, on this day in 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte married Josephine de Beauharnais, but of far greater impact on the world was the introduction of the first ‘Barbie Doll’ at a New York toy fair in 1959.

Chinese schoolchildren equipped to make the grade
For more than a decade, the Rotary Club of Crows Nest, NSW, has been helping families in rural Binxian County, Shaanxi Province, China, invest in their children’s future. Previous efforts, some supported by Rotary Foundation Matching Grants, have trained primary school teachers; provided schools with desks, chairs and books; and given scholarships to students, enabling them to stay at school.
In 2006, the club joined with the Rotary Club of Shanghai in a matching grant project that provided nearly 6,500 books to create libraries at 29 schools and tuition support for 148 students. Before the effort began, students in the isolated villages had no access to outside study resources because no other libraries existed.
Ongoing support is making a critical difference in the children’s lives. “Our first priority is to continue financially assisting students we supported in previous years until they leave primary school,” says Crows Nest club member Bill Lee. “When family income is insufficient, the girls are first to be taken out of school. This is one reason for giving preference to girls.”
One student, Han Mei, gained admission to Baoji University of Arts and Sciences. At its own expense, the club is continuing to support her education until she receives her bachelor’s degree in Chinese literature.
“I finally fulfill my dream to study in university,” Han wrote in a letter thanking the Crows Nest club for its support. “This means that after I graduate, I will be able to find a stable job.”
