Important Notice for all members

Next Tuesday, 1st April, will be your editor’s last meeting for four weeks, as I am taking my proof reader on a slow boat to China. My last bulletin before that break will be 1st April, and the next, will be 29th April. The programs for 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th April, will be printed next week, and if you plan to be absent for any of those meetings and you see your name listed for duty, it would be very helpful if you could advise me by phone or e-mail before 8.00pm on 1st April.

I am going to take a break for most of April

I find that writing a two page bulletin every week is a drag, and I bet you would, too. Three straight years of it is a bit much, but I promised John Calnin that I would continue for his ‘year’, so I am stuck with it for another 15 months, and you are stuck with me [or the ‘delete’ button]. Much of it is self-inflicted, as I could easily use photos, but I have this personal view that photos are a lazy way of doing the bully, and also, a lot of purely ‘Rotary’ stuff is, in my humble opinion, boring. I would like to be more of an editor than an author,
But at least I don’t have regular critics
So, I am proposing to write more about life in general, and there are some things about which I have strong views. This week, it’s ‘common sense’. It was going to be a reflection on the idiocy of professional footballers ‘urinating in public’, but that is, after all, just an example of what this heading is all about.

Obitiary

I thank Noel Emselle for the following contribution, which I feel sure he will not claim to be ‘original’.

‘Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn’t always fair, and maybe it was my fault’. More next week.

Of babies and birds

Did you see that terrific photo of Suzie Israel and her baby son in last Thursday’s Addie? Benjamin Charles Owen finally went home after weeks of complicated surgery.
Remember my articles about the successive families of cygnets on Begola Wetlands? After 35 days of heat and no rain, the lake was down to about 1%, and mom decided her latest brood of 4 had to move on. Last Saturday, she took them across busy Emperor Drive to explore the channel through to Bonnyvale Road. Let’s hope Dad, who stayed behind, got a call through to them that it rained 9mm in the lake on Monday.

Luba Grigorovitch was an inspiration

A double degree from Uni., joining Altona City Rotary Club at 22, Lynn Kosky’s assistant, sportswoman, world tourist, heading the New Generations committee, already attracted a 28yo & a 30yo into her club, and she’s much prettier than our youngest member, Luba has come a long way in a very short time. We should all take note, - a breath of fresh air!
