Notable World Events in the week ahead [that was] The first potato chips!
When chef George Crum attempted to get back at a nuisance customer on 24th August 1853 by slicing his potatoes so thin that they couldn’t be eaten with a fork, he didn’t realize he was starting a billion dollar industry. But that’s how the humble potato chip industry started.
Part American Indian, part African American, Crum was working at a very fashionable restaurant known as Moon Lake Lodge in Saratoga Springs, New York, when he introduced his invention to Cornelius Vanderbilt, who complained about his soggy fried potatoes and was ecstatic when the new invention was served. They were first named ‘Saratoga Chips’
In U.S.A. alone, it is now a $6 billion industry, but without the ‘Saratoga’.
Also, perhaps worthy of mention, is the fact that Captain James Cook, on 22nd August, 1770, landed at Botony Bay.

Another bit of Olympic History The Modern Pentathlon
A sport from the ancient Games was included in the Olympic programme in 1912.It was the pentathlon, which involved five different athletic events – long jump, discus throwing, javelin throwing, a 200 metre race, and a 1500 metre race.
In 1912, Baron de Coubertin [The founder of the Modern Olympics], also introduced another pentathlon which he invented himself. He called it the Modern Pentathlon. The Baron was inspired by the deeds of a 19th century French cavalry officer who had to ride through enemy lines to deliver a message. Along the way, he had a sword fight, and had to shoot at enemy soldiers. Then his horse was shot from under him, so he had to swim across a river and run the rest of the way. The modern Pentathlon consists of riding, fencing, shooting, swimming and a cross-country run.
The ancient-style pentathlon was discontinued after 1924, but the modern pentathlon is still an Olympic event. I still don’t understand the rules of Judo.

A family fun day and bike ride, Sunday 31st Aug. along the track by the train, Drysdale to Queenscliff
Family and friends can join in. Starts at the Drysdale station at 11AM, registrations from 10. The ride follows the train line all the way. It’s not a race, but there will be prizes! There will be a BBQ at the Queenscliff RS after the finish. Entry fee of $5 includes sausage and burger [with or without onions], drinks available. The train will take the riders back to Drysdale at 2.45, or they can bikeride the return journey – uphill. A few district Rotary Clubs [including Highton and Bayside] are organizing the day, and any non-riders can take the train both ways for $5. If you don’t want to ride on a bike or the train, you can drive straight to Queenscliff RS and wait for the riders from about 11.30. THIS SHOULD BE A FUN DAY BE THERE !!!

This day tonight
If Rod and Judy Greer get to read this bulletin, the Foxes report that Jess is well and loves her daily romp around Begola Wetlands.
At this morning’s 8 AM meeting of the Board, a number of suggested programmes were discussed, but enthusiasm was particularly expressed for Jan Fox’s suggestion for a craft display- not a craft ‘market’ as announced tonight. Jan seeks volunteers to join her on a planning committee.
This weeks award for poor judgment goes to Geoff Brentnall, who would have got a perfect score of 8 in the footy tipping comp., if he had picked the pies! He also won the award for disloyalty!
The Board also resolved to dispense with a professional audit on the advice of Foxy. We are not required to have an audit by the Incorporated Associations Act, and the RI model rules simply impose the necessity for Rotary clubs to have an ‘annual review’ of their financial statements by one or more suitably qualified professionals. The requirements of a review, as opposed to an audit, are very much simpler, and could potentially save the club up to $2,000 in audit fees.
The district DIK committee based at North Geelong urgently requires helpers. Rotarians with spare time available should seek details from Pres. John or Geoff Ford.
A social programme suggestion sheet has been circulated by Marion Walton and Ingrid Cummins.
Please submit your preferences and/or new ideas to them a.s.a.p.
When she saw her first strands of grey hair, she thought she’d die.
