The night we cancelled a meeting because of a horse race
Article 6 of the standard club constitution, provides,[a] that a club shall hold a regular meeting once each week on the day and time provided in the bylaws, [b] provides for a meeting to be changed within a six-day time frame either way, and [c], provides for cancellation by the Board, of no more than four regular meetings in a year. Essentially, a club’s Board of Directors may cancel a meeting if it falls on a legal holiday.
6.25 PM, Tuesday, 4th November, 2008
Anyway, with publication of this week’s edition five minutes before the meeting is due to start, it’s a record!

The Hungarian uprising is crushed [and we should never forget that this sort of turmoil could happen again.]
The Hungarian uprising against the control of the U.S.S.R. began on October 23,1956, with peaceful demonstrations in Budapest. Protestors were calling for the reinstatement of Prime Minister Imre Nagy, who had been dismissed the year before for his liberal policies, and the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the country. Clashes between armed police and demonstrators became more violent and Soviet tanks were called into action.
That night, the Hungarian Communist Party reinstated Nagy, but fighting continued. On October 25, Soviet tanks fired at demonstrators in Parliament Square and hundreds of protesters were killed. The tanks withdrew from the city on October 30. Nagy announced that his government was dedicated to gaining freedom from the U.S.S.R. and Hungary was withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact.
Nikita Khrushchev, leader of the U.S.S.R. ordered a crackdown on November 4. The Soviet Air Force bombed Budapest, and tanks and soldiers invaded the city at dawn. By November 12 the uprising had been crushed. An estimated 30,000 people had been killed in Budapest alone and more than 200,000 fled to the West.
Nagy had called for help from the UN and the West, but they did not respond beyond expressing their disapproval of Soviet actions. He took refuge in the Yugoslav Embassy but was captured by Soviet agents and on June 16, 1958 was executed for treason. In 1989 his body was exhumed from an unmarked grave and he was buried with full honors on the anniversary of his death. Soviet troops finally withdrew from Hungary in 1991.

The Ibis Part 6 of 6
Much pressure had been placed on various authorities to maintain water levels, flows and breeding vegetation to preserve the future of the Ibis. The Promotion Committee of the Field and Game Association of the Kerang District was anxious to build a suitable viewing hide or mound for the public to see the birds in their natural state, without disturbing their natural habitat. With the assistance of the Fisheries and Wildlife Department, the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission and the Shire of Kerang this was fast becoming a reality, but that was a long time ago, and there have been many years of drought since then.
Perhaps Peter and Jo Hawthorne, or Bill Steains can provide a postscript. I will undertake to print it.

Rotary by the numbers [comparing figures at 1st July 2008, with 1st April 2008]
Rotarians 1,231,483 [up 6437]; Rotary Districts 534 [up 2]; Rotary Clubs 32,270 [down 637!!];
Rotaract Clubs 7396 [up 291]; Rotaract members 170,108 [up 6,693]
Interact Clubs 11,605 [up 350]; Interact Members 266,915 [up 8,050];
Ed. Note: This would appear to indicate two strong trends- 1. More Rotarians are being compacted into much fewer clubs, and 2, Rotaract and Interact are growing at a much greater rate than Rotary –[ worldwide perhaps, but clearly, not in Australia]..

22nd November, 1963 – The assassination of a President
After arriving in Texas earlier that morning, the U.S. presidential party departed for a 16km. motorcade through downtown Dallas to the Trade Mart where President John F Kennedy was to deliver a speech. It was a clear day, so the President and Mrs Kennedy were traveling in an open-topped limousine.
At 12.30 p.m., the motorcade turned a corner into Elm Street, and as the Presidents car passed in front of the seven-story Texas School Book Depository, a series of rifle shots was fired from the building. President Kennedy grabbed his throat as he was struck in the neck, Texas Governor John Connolly , sitting in front of him, turned around and was shot in the chest, then another shot hit the President in the back of the head.
In the confusion that followed, security officer Clint Hill clambered into the car, and pushing Mrs Kennedy down, shielded her and her husband. In five minutes, the speeding limousine reached the Parkland Memorial Hospital where President Kennedy was pronounced dead at 1.00 p.m.
