Notable World Events in the week ahead [that was] December 20th 1979
In the mid-1970’s, the Arab oil embargo. rising fuel prices, and falling sales both at home and abroad were taking a heavy toll. By 1979, Chrysler, the weakest of America’s big three car manufacturers, was losing 6-8 million dollars a day, and was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. The Corporation appealed to the U.S. Government to organize a federal bail-out, as it had done earlier in the decade to save aviation company Lockheed. Initially, President Jimmy Carter was reticent, seeing such intervention as violating the principles of the free market. Conversely, allowing the American giant to crash would result in massive job losses at the Detroit car maker and hundreds of thousands more in related industries.
A package involving U.S.$1.5 billion was passed by a reluctant congress on 20th December 1979. 29 years later, they are doing it all again, but, for about three times the amount, and by all of the major car companies, the heads of which, on their first approach to the Government, mainly flew in by personal jet.
A poor little country hick like me can’t understand why these people are allowed to get away with this nonsense. Blind Freddy’s dog would know that there are simply too many makes and models of vehicles on the road. I reckon the car companies will continue to go broke, and the rest of us will continue to suffer the consequences. I wonder how many of the top execs. are Rotarians?

A biographical note
JESUS CHRIST [c.6 bc-c.30 ad], the founder of Christianity, born ‘The Son of God’ in Bethlehem, Judaea. According to the accounts in St. Matthew’s and St. Luke’s gospels, he was the first-born child of the Virgin Mary of the tribe of Judah and descendant of David and wife of Joseph, a carpenter. The birth took place in a stable, because on their way to Joseph’s home town, Nazareth, in order to comply with the regulations for a Roman population census, they found there was no room for them at the inn.
Little is written of his early boyhood and manhood. He is believed to have followed Joseph’s trade of carpentry, but at the age of twelve we are told how his astonished mother saw him knowledgeably discoursing with the scribes, being assured by him that he was about ‘his father’s business’. But nearly 18 years passed in obscurity, until his baptism at the hands of his cousin, John the Baptist gave him the divine intimation of his mission. Extracted from Chambers Biographical Dictionary.

A letter to the Editor, from the President of the Rotary club of Bourne & Cookham, UK
‘Dear John,
I was taken by your piece on page one about The Human Touch and will be reading it to my lot today at lunch, thanks.
The rule about meeting EVERY week is under heavy stress in the UK and we are to bring a suggestion to RI at the next conference, that we have the CHOICE to meet TWICE a month, only, in order to promote Membership of younger men & women who have to WORK and cannot make every week.
We as a club had, until ten years ago, always been a lunchtime club, but then alternate evenings and lunchtimes were introduced and this is our format today.. With the move to encourage more younger men and women to join us, we are I think, moving towards an all evening club, which I think will be sad, but who apart from us old farts can attend at lunchtime anyway.
It is something which will rumble on for a year or two, but in the end the Lunchtime Clubs will go and we will have Breakfast, Twilight or Evening Clubs only with meetings twice a month. Sorry to ramble on, but I feel we should all know how our fellow Rotarians feel at any time and how better than through our contact with each other ?’ Robin 02/12/08
Ed. Comment Robin’s letter is reprinted verbatim, and I have not even acknowledged it at this time. I would be interested to hear your views, and will print them if space permits. I reserve my judgment.
