A reminder to those members who have volunteered to take duty at ‘Amy’s Ride’

The volunteers received an e-mail from Rachael Kininmonth on Saturday night, and all members got a copy on Sunday morning from me. In a telephone conversation with Rachael, I established that we will be at a water and toilet stop at the car park adjacent to beach access W20 on the Ocean Grove/ Barwon Heads road.

If any other member wishes to offer his/her services on the day, I invite you to join the team in meeting Rachael in the Collendina pub at 3.00 PM next Saturday. It is most important that the team keep this appointment, and I would appreciate you phoning or e-mailing me with your acceptance of the invitation to meet on Saturday. Even if there are only limited jobs, more helpers could reduce the length of the shifts.

Extracts from the 2007/08 Annual Report of the Amy Gillett Foundation        I can get copies.

Lack of visibility is a major contributing factor in most accidents between cyclists and motorists on Australian roads. As cyclists and motorists, when it comes to making a safe choice to be more visible on our roads, we fall short. We’re counting the cost…..

Lights – front and rear
68% of car drivers in a recent survey said they found cyclists hard to see, as many were observed not using lights at night. For the cost of a dozen coffees, lights, front and rear, are the best investment. And don’t forget to check the batteries.                                          Front lights available from retailers for a maximum $29.98.
Research indicates that flashing red lights are much more visible to motorists. Some cyclists even have numerous red lights fitted to increase their likelihood of being seen. Victorian law also states that bike lights should be visible from 200 metres                      Rear lights $24.95

Why don’t you ever see the headline ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’?

Who do you think is Australia’s richest person?       James Packer [5.3 Billion] ?
No, he is a long way behind Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest [10.5 billion]. The founder and chief executive of iron ore company Fortescue Metals Group, Andrew has become the richest person in Australia. The 46 year old West Australian streaked past James Packer thanks to a rapid rise in Fortescue’s share price. His early years were spent as a jackeroo on the family station in Mindaroo. He is married with three children.

Embrace diversity to keep Rotary strong

For those of us who have been Rotarians for many years, the benefits of membership are obvious. Our weekly club meetings provide us with a welcome opportunity to see good friends; our projects give us the satisfaction of serving others.
It is important to remember that Rotary is a diverse organization of 1.2 million members, in over 200 countries and geographical areas.. We are not, and should never become, a homogenous group. And so we must be aware that there may be many excellent candidates for membership who may be different from us. They may be of a different age or profession, or come from a different background. But this is all the more reason to offer an invitation to visit a club meeting. If you know of someone who you think to be a qualified candidate but not a good ‘fit’ for your club, perhaps it is time to reconsider. What benefits might that individual bring to your club?
Every year, as the population of the world grows, the need for Rotary service grows with it. If we are to continue to Make Dreams Real, we must all embrace the responsibility of keeping Rotary strong.
