‘From The Chalk-Board’:
‘Care Packs’ - District Governor’s Partner’s Project: Christine Sim’s 2009/2010 Project provides for Glad sandwich-bag size ‘care-packs’ of male and female personal essentials (soap, combs, tooth-brushes, tooth-paste and so on) distributable in emergency situations (e.g. Bush Fires). It would be good if this Club was involved – perhaps by the procurement of complete packs or separate pack-items through Club purchase or member-donation. President Rod would like to present our response on the night of the District Governor’s visit. To this end he would like to know Club members’ feelings on the subject (please advise him, or Judy, as soon as possible).
Bangarang Drought Relief BBQ 16 August: Margaret Campbell and John Calnin hope other Ocean Grove Rotarians will share with them the joys of a long scenic tour to the heart of the Wimmera and back on Sunday 16 August.

Membership Month – August 2009:
Noel Emselle will kick-off Membership Month on 4 August with a club workshop. RI and District statistics will be reviewed. Issues include new member recruitment and existing member satisfaction and retention. The meeting on 11 August will be a ‘guest night’ when Ocean Grove Rotarians are asked to invite a friend or colleague to share our fellowship – and to hear a special guest speaker, John Reid; vintner, journalist, poet, radio announcer (774 news) – and a Point Lonsdale resident. Noel tells us that ‘John will offer us a tasting of some of his wines and his poetry’. It is an occasion not to be missed – especially by people who could or should be Rotarians!
The Rotary Story And How We Are Shaping It:
The more we know of what is going in the Ocean Grove Rotary Club; the more we can apply ourselves to Rotary’s objectives - locally and at large. As foreshadowed; there will now be space in the first issue each month for committees etc to communicate more fully than is possible at the weekly dinner-table. Rotarian Phil Edwards’ excellent contribution is the first in the series.
Markets (Phil Edwards)
The major effort in the months leading up to the start of our market season in October is to get our sponsorship in place, our advertising squared away, the rosters finalised and get our stallholders. We have secured $2100 in sponsorship so far ($1500 from Club Grove and $200 from each of three local supporting sponsors); we are still waiting on a decision from Bendigo Bank with Geoffrey Cummins working hard to get a decision from them. Once we finalise our sponsorship outcomes we can get out advertising cards and signs printed with Richard Grimmett working hard finalising the art work as this bulletin goes to the blog (as opposed to goes to print).
Our application ($455) to Council to use five of the roadside Community Noticeboards for advertising across the full market season has just been lodged and we hope the signage will draw in customers from beyond Ocean Grove. If we secure our final sponsor (Bendigo Bank) we should be in a position to also replace some of the heavy old yellow signs that are put out each market morning with fresh lightweight signs and also implement a safer stowage arrangement for the Club trailer.
In September like last year, all Rotarians will be asked to help in a letterbox drop of the A6 market cards – great exercise – so get ready to pick an area. This season the market cards will be printed on the reverse with a short synopsis of Rotary and where we have spent money in the last financial year; this is aimed at contributing to the awareness of Rotary and answering the often asked question of “where does the money go?”. Our net profit this season is $25K – a 35% increase from last season.
We are working toward a joint advertising activity with the Surfside Primary School Produce Fair who have their Fair on the same day as our November market – we should be able to leverage each other’s activity for mutual success. Our donations bucket will be up and running again this season at every market and we have already locked in two beneficiaries who will provide collectors on their respective days – Ocean Grove Toy Library for January and OGSLC for Easter Monday.
Finally, the market roster is an opportunity for every Rotarian to contribution something to the market. Please advise Rotarian Heather of your availability and make yourself available as much as you can. Tell Heather if you want to do more time on the roster.
