From President Rod (newly returned and in training for his big gallop – Course Bookmakers are offering evens for a finish and fifty-to-one for a pre-midnight finish).

· Program and Guest Speakers: Congratulations to John Eyles and his team for organising the Club’s Vocational Service Award Scheme and presenting three outstanding recipients at last week’s meeting. John reminds us that ‘Vocational Service’ is one of the four original ‘Avenues of Service’ for Rotarians. Recipients Rhonda Beacon (City of Geelong Customer Service Officer); Shelly Cumming (Paxton Press Graphic Artist – and daughter of proud Rotarian Geoff Eglin) and Emma Harrison (22 years service as a Community Health receptionist) set exemplary standards for us all. We wish them well in their future endeavours.

Volunteers: This is the busy time of the year. Market workers and raffle ticket sellers, please step forward. And, there will soon be plenty of opportunities coming up for the Surfside School and Lookout Reserve projects. Check your diaries and be ready to volunteer.

Rod’s Foundation Run – 22 November 09: Buy your guesses; how fast and what is the predicted time? $10 for three guesses or $5 each.

The Rotary Way: October is Rotary’s Vocational Service Month and last week’s presentations - and President Rod’s comments - are timely. In reminding us last week that ‘Vocational Service’ is one of the four original Rotary ‘Avenues of Service’ (the others being ‘Club Service’, ‘Community Service’ and ‘International Service’), Rotarian John Eyles highlights the essential distinction between Rotary and other service clubs. Rotary sees vocational diversity and excellence as civilisation’s essentials and leaders in their callings should apply a measure of their trained skills and capabilities hands-on and voluntarily for the greater good, locally and beyond. Hence Rotary’s historic emphasis on projects (major and otherwise) where personal and professional contributions of time, effort and resource often outweigh financial ones.
