Some amazing stories of Polio
·      Polio is an intestinal virus that enters the environment through faeces. When lack of sanitation was a problem every where, nearly everyone caught polio.
·      It is spread through person-to-person contact, especially in situations of poor hygiene, and enters the body through mouth.
·      The poliovirus is a single positive strand of RNA enclosed in a protective coating called a capsid. It can survive for up to two months outside the body. It is in the same virus family as the common cold.
To be continued.

If you are offended  by Irish jokes, substitute ‘Pakistani’ for ‘Irishman’.
Have you heard about the Irishman who waited outside a brothel for hours because the red light wouldn’t turn green?
Of Student Exchange
Many of our members will join me in memories of very successful exchanges in this traditional programme of Rotary. We may be getting a bit old for current participation, but there are outstanding examples of how successful this continuing programme has been.
My fondest memory is that of Japanese student from Sapporo, Shigeyuki Furuno. Yuki turned 17 during his visit to my first Rotary club, Robinvale, in 1974/75, with no English and travelling outside Japan for the first time. He attributes his success in business to his year at Robinvale on student exchange..
Now one of Japan’s leading businessmen, he attended our annual change-over dinner in 2008 with his very talented wife Atsuko [pianiste, chef and wine consultant]. Yuki joined Rotary in 1999 and is club secretary of Sapporo RC. 125 members, [average age 63], but a paid secretary is also employed. There are 14 Rotary clubs in Sapporo, 3 of which do not have lady members, including Yuki’s club, which also has only one partners night, [Christmas]

Heather Wallace turns it on for the ladies
Our roving social sub-editor reported an evening of wine, food, fun and pampering at Chateau Wallace last Thursday, featuring skin care products from the house of Arbonne. Host Heather provided a door prize- won by Judy, and donated 10% of the gross to Polio Plus. There is to be a repeat performance on Sunday 13/12 at 2.30, directed not only at Rotary ladies, but relatives, neighbours and even partners!! Bring your own skin. Arbonne Xmas hampers will be on special.
