This Day Tonight
- The working bee at the surfside PS went very well, and there will be a final one after Easter.
- Bill Walton will deputise for Noel Emselle at the Rusties 'Do' on 10th April at OG Park.
- The three RYPEN girls will be taken to the S.A. event by the Greers.
- Geoff Brentnall's blue fingernails have now raised $187'
- Peter Hawthorne's Red Cross calling collections are now $6,500, with a possible end result of $8,000.
- Apologies for next Tuesday's meeting may be lodged with Hans, but only between 0800 and 1200 Saturday 3rd April.
- Phil Edwards reports a full house of stallholders for next Monday's market..
- First Aid certificate holders are encouraged to register for a May refresher course with Wal Kelly, or they may lose their accreditation.
- Geoff Brentnall only picked 7/8 in last weeks footy tipping, foolishly rejecting the Dockers for a win. However, Bill Walton proved to be amongst the best five pickers in the national competition by correctly choosing all 8 winners Bloody fluke!
- John Paton rode a bike for nine days for PolioPlus last week, including a climb of 1000metres on each of those days. It was late in the evening's announcements, but I guess it was not consecutive days, continuously uphill, as Kosciusko is a lot less than 9000 metres high! One lady couldn't ride for physiological reasons, and instead swam in public swimming pools along the way for a total of 25kms!!
Mental Health in our community
Naomi Adams and Ailsa Stephenson were our guest speakers tonight. Both trained Mental Health specialists with the Bellarine Community Health Service, they proved to be excellent public speakers, and certainly didn't appear to miss the planned 'power point' facility which they had been promised.
Our Rotary club organised a well-attended public meeting on this subject last year, and we must all have been alarmed to hear tonight that about 20% of Australians will have some form of mental heath problem in their lifetime. I must admit to having glanced around the room to ponder on which ten of my fellow members were at least a bit 'susso!
Eleven locals recently completed an eight weeks course and four of those participant's case studies [identities suppressed, of course], were briefly described by Ailsa.
Those two ladies are not trained medical specialists, but skilled counsellors on depression, anxiety, trauma, family problems, aging, retirement, grief and loss. The nature and extent of questions was ample proof of their effectiveness.
Three fascinating, but otherwise quite useless pieces of information.
- The strawberry is the only fruit that has its seeds on its outer skin.
- A rotten egg has a green yolk..
- The amount of rice that 'rice blast' fungus destroys each year could feed 60 million people.

Definition of Rotary
In 1976, the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested in creating a concise definition of the fundamental aspects of Rotary. They turned to the three men who were then serving on RI's Public Relations Committee and requested that a one–sentence definition of Rotary be prepared. After numerous drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications.
"Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united world-wide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world."
Why are Australian judges often called wharfies? Because they sit on cases.
A little English is a dangerous thing
My proof reader referred to me this extract from last Thursday's 'Age' obituaries, which was in bold type, and which I quote verbatim:
'Goldie was close to most of the six Popes under whom she served…[and] she adhered to a moderate brand of liberalism'. Fair dinkum.
And, at about the same time, I was reading an article in the 'Addy', headed 'Ambos speak out', a highlighted portion reading;
Someone will ring up and say something like "My baby is not breathing" to the call-taker and they won't make it clear that it is a dog'.
