VOL 27 NO. 43

27th April 2010
This Day Tonight
·      Today’s Geelong Advertiser reports that this year’s Queenscliff Seafoodfest raised $50,000  for the Royal Children’s Hospital, down by more than 50% on last year’s effort. Ed. Comment – A lot of very hard work by a huge work party, for a piddling result!
·      Last call for the CPR refresher course. Contact WAL KELLY.
·      The most momentous announcement for this week is the huge success of PP Helen Trigg, having been selected by a district committee to be our District Governor for 2012/13. We all extend hearty congratulations to Helen for this distinguished post. In the 27 years history of our club, Helen is only the second member to become District Governor. Interesting to note that if that high office was pro-rata to membership and duration of club existance, we would have only scored half a DG by now, instead of 2. [If you think that’s all a bit vague, send in your questions – with a stamped address envelope for return!]
·      John Calnin reported that his Anzac Day dawn service brekky mob served 170 B & E sangers. Alison George reflected that if they were laid out end to end, they would stretch……
·      On that note, Secy. Vic reminds us that bowel scan kits are available from pharmaceutical chemists for $10.
·      Another note from Alison reminds us of the forthcoming DIK collections.
·      The Rotary Foundation fact for tonight reminded us that donors of US$10,000 become really important Rotarians, but for US$250,000, you get to be one of Arch Klumph’s associates! [It’s also a tax deduction]
·      The district assembly at Stawell next month, [Sunday, 16th May] has attracted only 5 members to support President-Elect  Noel Emselle, and board members and newer members are urged to give Noel .their support.
·      Judy Greer referred to the recent RYPEN week, and was supported by Karina Maronian, who gave a very comprehensive and enthusiastic review of her attendance.
·      Judy also reported on progress with Bellarine Secondary College, Christian College and St Ignatius  for possible participation in the Science Experience  on 6th/7th May, assisted by Deakin University staff.
·      The projected Theatre Night at Leopold has been deferred until later this year.

Three fascinating, but otherwise quite useless pieces of information.
  *  A New Zealand fisherman caught a colossal squid that was 10 metres long. Its body was so enormous that calamari rings made from it would be as big as tractor tyres.      Fair dinkum
  *  Polar bears have transparent [not white] hair and their skin is black to absorb maximum heat from the sun.
  *  Hippos, whales and dolphins are the only mammals that give birth under water.

Our Footy Tipping Competition [weekly report by Gary Golding]
Predictably, no one got within a lion’s roar of 8/8, but five of us got 5/8. Geoff Ford was the ww [wine winner]. One of our number has not yet paid to enter the competition! His name will be printed next week.

The Anzac Day Dawn Service
It was, once again, a brief but very moving ceremony. [Even my little dog stood to attention!] No locals involved with the first world war have survived. All those surviving servicemen and women of the second world war would now be in their eighties or nineties, and the ranks of the Korean and Vietnam wars are thinning. Yet, every year in this small country town, men, women and children of all ages get out of bed in the dark to attend the dawn service, and remember. Richard Grimmett, in his customary role of stage manager, estimated the crowd at 400. John Calnin, in his customary role as maitre D, handled the hungry horde and his team of Rotary helpers, with his usual aplomb and efficiency. I am always proud to be a member of the Rotary club of Ocean Grove, but I was especially proud last Sunday morning. We are a very visible presence at the dawn service, and I imagine that it will continue for the life of this club. See also p 1

This year’s District Assembly wll be held on Sunday 16th May at the Stawell Secondary College
This important Rotary function is compulsory for incoming Presidents, and pretty well essential for incoming Board members and committee chairpersons. But any Rotarian can attend, and President-Elect Noel Emselle will warmly welcome your support.
The day promises something for every Rotarian – valuable information and support for all incoming club officers, as well as all the latest Rotary news and information for new and more experienced Rotarians alike.
Registration on the day starts at 9.00 am, with sessions starting promptly at 10.00 am. The day’s proceedings will end at 3.30 pm. Detailed program sheets are available from Noel

Q & A in half a line
What’s an innuendo?  An Italian suppository.

Tonight’s guest speakers
Nikki Dunne from the OG Neighborhood Centre described the ‘Drop-In programme’, which is aimed at the youth of the district and supprts about 800 local teenagers, of which Cassie was a very able supporter of  Nikki in her address to the meeting.
The Centre has conducted 6 camps, plus trips to the Gold Coast and other place of interest and fun. One of the tangible advantages of the Centre’s efforts to involve the youth of our district in productive activities is the drop of 85% in the incidence of graffiti in the town and surrounds.
On a less encouraging note, is the increasing use of the computer scourge- ‘Facebook, which is a foreign object to your editor, but a highly volatile medium in the broad community of  this and other innocent innocent[?] towns throughout the country. [Frankly, I am grateful to have been a teenager in the last, rather than this, century!
