The Last hurrah from our President
“I heard a good comment at the Surf Club presentation night the other week. It was about leadership. The comment was along the lines of ‘It’s easy to get members, but hard to get leaders’.
One of the great things about Rotary is that nearly everyone who is invited to join has already had a good deal of leadership experience and so it has given us a great reservoir of resources to call on to carry out the various challenges. I, along with previous presidents, have been fortunate to be able to tap into this talent and enjoy very successful years for the good of the community and the causes of Rotary.
The annual report will detail all our accomplishments and in it I have thanked members for their participation and efforts over the year. I won’t repeat that here as I suspect I’ll do a bit of that at the changeover dinner. However, it has been a great year, and one in which I have been proud to represent the club on many occasions.
My ‘last hurrah’ through the bulletin is to stress that we all have leadership talents that we can apply to any number of different tasks in Rotary and in the community. In the next few years we will be asked to undertake some role that may take us out of our comfort zone, but it is those challenges that someone saw the potential in us and said ‘will you take on this particular role’.
So when you take on the challenge and have ‘a red hot go’ at the end of the year you will be able to say ‘Rotary has been in our hands’ and we have ‘done good’!”
Rod Greer, President 09/10
This Day Tonight
· It’s $35 pp for the Change-over night dinner at the Barwon Heads Golf Club. Jackets and ties for the gentlemen. The ladies are sure to be dressed appropriately so I won’t insult them with directions, but if any member turns up in nothing more than a jacket and tie, they will be photographed. PHF badges should be worn, with or without the ribbon.
· The RC’s of Queenscliffe and Drysdale are both holding their change-over nights on Monday 28th June.
· The DIK collections by John Wynn & Peter Cullen are on next Monday, PM. If you have offerings and haven’t listed on tonight’s sheet, contact Alison.
· Bill Walton warned us of the next Lookout Reserve working bee for probably Sunday 27th June.
· Our applicant for the next National Youth Science Forum faces one last interview for selection, and, if successful, his name will be published with the club’s congratulations.
· Peter Hawthorne introduced this year’s Organ Donor Appeal, and if your editor heard it right, there are 2000 Australians waiting for life-saving organs, but our so-called lucky country has only 260 active donors. As one of about 40% of OG Rotary members registered, I am ashamed to have to report such appalling figures. If my information is correct, our club members are about 8% of the National listing??
This weeks AudioBoo begins with Dick Clay's excellent raffle and covers President Rod's announcements. Listen while you read your bulletin for the complete Rotary experience at home!
World traveller, former Rotary Exchange Student, raconteur, brilliant orator and CEO of Sustainability Victoria, Anita, told us that it’s all about environmental excellence – a partnership between the Environment Protection Authority, Australian Industry, Keep Australia Beautiful Council, various Government and semi-government bodies and we, the householders.
It’s all about solar power and other ‘green’ and environmentally friendly facilities. It’s about an awareness of the behavioural changes we need to adopt for a healthier and cleaner community, of bringing interested parties together for their mutual benefit. In that sense, Sustainability Victoria is a facilitator, and the Armstrong Creek development, proposing 22,000 new homes and supporting facilities, is a huge challenge for all of those involved with that proposal. Thank you Anita for enlightening us all.

From the Pages of Rotary’s History
Glenn E Estess was RI President in 2004/05, the centenary year of the founding of Rotary. Glenn was extremely proud of his involvement and undertook considerable research into Rotary’s activities during his year of high office.
“During that one year, Rotarians worked over 25 million hours on more than 180,000 projects in 168 counties. Many of these projects focused on the presidential emphasis, which for the first time included water management along with health concerns, literacy, and the family of Rotary.
Clubs also sponsored nearly 8,000 centennial community projects and 600 twin club projects. The crowning moment of the centennial year was the Chicago convention. More than 39,000 Rotarians from 161 countries and geographical regions attended.” History does not record how they coped with catering problems.
Our Footy Tipping Competition [weekly report from Gary Golding]
“A great weekend of footy. Cats move on but it is interesting that the Hawks are on the way up. Sensational tipping by Richard Grimmett-8 winners-his second bottle of wine!!!! Bill W still leads with 69, Geoff F next with 66 and then Gary G on 65, Noel E, Geoff C and Marion W on 64, and then the rest, down to 55.
Gary Golding forecast an exciting ‘Footy night’ for either 24th or 31st August, but not in OG!
Richard Grimmett and I are thinking of a submission to the Guinness Book of Records
None of you may have noticed, but last weeks bulletin was e-mailed to Richard at 9.20 pm, and he published the finished article on the internet at 9.27!. Please note that the meeting at Lombardys didn’t finish until 8.20, I then drove Alison home to Marcus Hill, and then reported on the function to my proof reader before recording the latest news and announcements in the partly completed bulletin. Richard then had to meld my text around several photos and illustrations, but it hit the airwaves, [dramatic expression that!] inside 90 minutes from the advertised end of the meeting. Is that a record for a club bulletin?
