Heather receives Rotary Leadership Institute Certificate from AG Jane Cox
24th August 2010 This Day Tonight
· This is old news and should have appeared in last week’s bulletin. A group of 16 Rotary ladies attended a very successful luncheon at ‘Café on Track’ [part of ‘Davidsons’], on Monday 16th August. It was an initiative of Ingrid Cummins, supported by Trish Emselle.
· AG Jane Cox [RC Geelong Central], presented Heather Wallace with her recently won Rotary leadership award..
· 98mm of rain to 8.30 pm on Tuesday 24th August, [the highest monthly total for at least two years], guarantees that Bill Walton still doesn’t need a watering roster for the new grass at the lookout reserve.
· Geoffrey Cummins announced that the members’ distribution of market promotional material is timed for the week of 20-28 Sept.
· Norman Elliott reported that our fellow Rotarian Gerry Spencer is recovering from his back operation in Epworth Hospital.
The Great Debate was an excellent night’s entertainment
It matters not that the affirmative team [that service clubs are struggling for membership] won by a very narrow margin. All six debaters did well and had prepared their arguments with great skill, humour and eloquence. It was a fun night.
Three fascinating, but otherwise quite useless pieces of information
· Louis XIV became King of France at the age of 4 and went on to reign for 72 years.
· The name Wendy was not used before the publication of J M Barrie’s Peter Pan.
· Yellow tennis balls were not used at Wimbledon until 1986. Before that they were white.
The footy tipping competition reaches a climax!
With just the last round of home-and-away matches next weekend, it appears that Bill Walton will be the runaway winner of the season, but Vic Harnath took the honours last weekend. Presentations 1,2 & 3 - 31/8.
More snippets from Rotary’s history - Paul Harris was unquestionably Rotarys father. He had the profound effect of creating and shaping its very existence and early years. But then he stepped back, and during his hiatus years, the long-term philosophy of the organization – almost all of which remains today – was influenced by other men of vision and action.
In the 1920’s, Paul returned to serve the rest of his life-long term as president emeritus. In 1929 he suffered a heart attack. Thereafter, he became Rotary’s roving ambassador, travelling around the world, usually with Jean at his side, to conferences, conventions and club assemblies. Paul memorialized many of those trips by writing articles for The Rotarian and three books of “Peregrinations,”, recounting his visits to the exotic parts of the Rotary world.
Never Jump to Conclusions!
A small girl went out to where her father was working in the garden and said, ”Daddy, what does sex mean?” Dad was not quite sure that he had heard right.“What does what mean?”, he asked, obviously playing for time. “Sex”, she repeated.“Why…er… why do you want to know what sex means?” “Because Mummy told me to tell you lunch will be ready in a couple of them”.

A letter to the editor from Ian Downing about the Art Show
“The Show will run from Saturday 29 Oct to Monday 31 Oct 2011 in the Queenscliff Town Hall. We have worked as a team for twelve months. Much of the preparatory work is done. We will soon be entering the executive phase of the operation. We now aim to bring the membership ‘up to speed’ and in so doing share our enthusiasm for a ground-breaking project that will take our Rotary Club to another level of community service. The official opening will be held on Friday evening 28 Oct in the Queenscliff Town Hall.
Gathering sponsorship is a key-preparatory task. We can now proceed with confidence – and are more than hopeful of increasing our sponsor numbers. In the meantime I would appreciate it if you would publicise and compliment Phil Edwards for his $5000 ‘Art Show Major Sponsorship’, and Bill Steains for his $1000 ‘Art Show Sponsorship’.
You will know that professional fund-raisers [I was one] always stress the importance of getting donors from within a beneficiary organization’s membership [it is always easier to get people to put their hands in their pockets when they know the asker is also a donor]. Possibly there may be more contributions at one or another level from within the Club. Incidentally you might also publicize the fact that our fellow-Rotarian Geoff Eglin [Paxton Press] printed free of charge the sponsorship brochures [designed by Dick Clay and his sponsorship team] that we hand out when dealing with potential sponsors – the invoice value of the brochures was $220.”
Tonight was my last night at Rotary for five weeks, and Alison George will text the bulletin for September.
