Guest Speaker: Barry Golding. “Mens Shed.”
Barry is Professor (Adjunct) in adult and community education of the Federation
University Australia until 2021. Prior to this appointment he was Associate Dean, Research, School of Education and Arte at the University of Ballarat; leader of the RAVE
(Researching Adult & Vocational Education) Group and Manager of the ‘Men’s learning beyond the workplace’ International Research.
In June 2016 he was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in recognition of ‘his significant contribution to tertiary education as a
researcher and author, to professional organizations and to the community.
Barry was President of the Adult Learning Australia Board, a voluntary Patron of the Australian Men’s Shed Association and an ALA board member until 2015. He was the Inaugural Chair of the International Men’s Shed Association.
He has also been responsible for creating and maintaining four main walking and
mountain bike tracks totaling around 270km in the Goldfields area as well as being a
former core member of the eight person Mulga Bill’s Bicycle Band from 1970 – 1976.
He is also an author of at least two books.
25 years ago Maxine Kitto realized there were many men sitting in their cars on their own
in car parks waiting for their wives who were involved in groups ‘doing things,’ and she
suggested that there could be a place where men could go. The fist such place was in
Goolwa, SA. ‘The Shed.’
Obviously Barry is an expert on older men’s learning and has found that men learn better
by doing and being involved in group activities many of which are structured. E.g. fire
brigades, masonic lodges, golf clubs or woodwork and construction activities for children
or charities.
The first Men's Shed was formally established in 1998 in Tongala. The movement was
publicized through the National Bank Newsletter and by word of mouth. By 2018 there
are 2000 sheds globally with 1000 in Australia. There are seven national associations.
Most Sheds are independent and different. The fastest recent growth has been in
Scotland, Wales and England. There is one new shed opening every day somewhere in
the world. In 2005 there was a national gathering, which has developed into a biennial
conference since 2009. The movement is obviously needed and valued especially as
many lonely men and war veterans are involved – it is a great way to promote men’s
health.
lives. Barry believes that most learning occurs through parents, community associations
and work not at school!
