Guest Speaker: Anne Barker. Foreign Correspondent for the ABC

Anne is a Walkley Award winner, no doubt appropriate recognition for her excellent, concise and accurate reporting in of the diverse events she has been witness to in many parts of the world.
Anne Has reported for the ABC from Thredbo during the landslide collapse, East Timor after Independence, from Cairo during the Arab Spring uprising, Jerusalem where she was challenged by some Jewish religious practices and most recently from the cave in Thailand during the rescue of the boys and their teacher.
She is preparing for a position in Indonesia, which will encompass Malaysia and Singapore. She says this is her dream appointment.
Anne has been working since beginning her career as a journalist for the ABC for 30 years. She studied teaching at University and found her niche in journalism during work experience. Most of her career opportunities she believes have been by chance and most have worked well as she has encountered very unusual situations and experiences. Her experience in the Thailand cave rescue she believes was a privilege and most enjoyable as the outcome was so positive. It was also very challenging juggling live crosses and the huge volume of reporters all competing for every scrap of news and space, however co-operation between reporters was good. The work done so willingly by the huge numbers of volunteers was amazing. Funding for some of the rescue came from the governments of the rescuers and the Thai Royal Palace met the cost of food and fluid.
Anne is amazed by the changes that have occurred in technology and has no doubt that there are more to come in the future.
It was good to hear that most reporters and cameramen have some training in emergency and hostile situations to keep them as safe as possible.
Anne’s talk was very interesting and well received by the audience who were pleased to meet the person whose voice most of us listen to through the ABC.
