Presentations – Judy Greer: Rotary Club of Ocean Grove 2018 Graham Bath Junior Community Awards.
Welcome:
In his absence, on behalf of our President, Graeme Chamberlain, and on behalf of the Members of the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove, it gives me pleasure to welcome the representative groups of Year 6 students from our three local primary schools – Surfside, Our Lady Star of the Sea and Ocean Grove, who have participated in our 20th Annual Graham Bath Junior Community Awards. Welcome to parents, and other family members and friends of the students, who have joined us for the presentations this evening. I acknowledge the presence of staff from each school including the Principal of Star of the Sea, Rhonda Boyd, who is about to retire.
Thank you Rhonda for your support in introducing the program at your school some years ago.
History: Most people in the room will have an awareness of the purpose and activity content of the program that was instigated and trialled back in 1997 by the Rotary Club of Mitchell River in Bairnsdale, East Gippsland in four of their local primary schools. The purpose of the program was, and I quote, to involve young people in a direct and positive way in using their skills and abilities to benefit both themselves and the local community’
The program proved to be very successful and is now recognised as a valuable program around Victoria, interstate and even overseas. We are indebted to Club Member Tony Haines who has been involved with the Award for 20 years, since it was first introduced to our Club by a past member, Graham Bath, after whom we named the Award, and commenced the program at Ocean Grove Primary School. So special thanks to Tony for ensuring that the program is still available to the Year 6 students of Ocean Grove.
The program whichthe students undertake is quite intensive and impacts on the whole family particularly through Terms two and three and so I thank parents for giving their time to support their children in what the club hopes has been a valuable learning opportunity about Community. It also requires ongoing commitment and support from the teachers of the students. Thank you to the Year 6 teachers for supporting us with the program and for making Tony, Geoff Chandler and myself so welcome in your classrooms. Thanks Tony and Geoff for all your assistance and commitment in getting the program up and running once again. The program requires commitment and persistence from the students too, with a range of activities to be completed which covers Community Service, Physical Recreation, Skills Development and Social Experiences focuses on a Community Commemoration, a Community Meeting, a Cultural Exchange, a Religious / Spiritual Experience and The Arts. Three of the activities each require an hour a week for 10 weeks – now that’s a commitment!
In all there were over 50 students who embarked on the program this year. For various reasons some found they are unable to see it through, but all those who did have made presentations at their particular schools during the past week. Tonight, we bring to you a selection of students from each school that will highlight some of the activities they completed for the Award.
Invite students forward in school groups – presentation of certificates at completion of each school group by Geoff Chandler. Year 6 Representatives from Ocean Grove’s three Primary Schools selected to speak at Rotary on Tuesday 30thOctober 2018:
