Reports
A report has been received that our outgoing exchange student Matt Craig is traveling and enjoying his trip
Rev. Debbie Hodge, Team Leader of the GSE Team, which visited the District recently from the UK, has sent an email to Henry Hudson expressing thanks for our hospitality and to say that the members gained a great deal from their visit.
Past District Governor Bob Furner extended the greetings of DG Cathy Roth and spoke of the work of the Rotary Foundation. The Foundation reached its target this Rotary year of $90,000 plus $30,000 for Polio eradication.
The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to support the efforts of Rotary International in the fulfilment of the Object of Rotary, Rotary's mission, and the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national, and international humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.
The Paul Harris Fellowship Award was presented to Tony Haines by PDG Bob Furner in a surprise announcement. The award is given by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International “In appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among people of the world”.
Libby Furner addressed the club regarding Literacy and the young. Libby pointed out that 130 million school age children are not attending school worldwide, and fundamental literacy skills are not being taught to these children. July is Literacy Month.
• Ninety-eight percent of the world's illiterate population is in developing countries.
• Fifty percent of the world's illiterate people live in India and China.
• More than 50 percent of the population of Africa is illiterate.
• Two-thirds of all those who lack literacy and numeracy skills are women.
• More than 130 million school-age children are not attending classes.
Membership, Geoff Brentnall – The membership target set this year is 60.
August is Membership Extension Month. Ongoing initiatives will be launched during the month eg: weekly review of membership by classification.
If members do not have Proposal Forms please see Geoff.
If members do not have “This is Rotary” and “What is Rotary” material please see John Fox.
Community Service, John Wynn (by email) - Whilst the following is not in the real sense a Community Service Report, I would like to “communicate” and share a "good news" Rotary experience with members.
Recently I attended the monthly meeting of the O.G. Fire Brigade and an 11y.o. Lachie from the O.G. Primary School confidently and eloquently addressed the meeting for some 10 minutes. The subject of his talk was some personal background and a detailed explanation of why he had attended the Fire Station for the last 5 Sunday mornings and would be doing so for the next 5 weeks to assist with weekly duties of hose checking and stowing, vehicle and station cleaning etc.
Lachie is one of a number of students undertaking the Rotary Junior Community Service Award program through the O.G.P.S. and the 30 persons present at the meeting were left in no doubt as to what this Service Award involved and the fact that it is sponsored by Rotary.
The school has now taken a key role in the program, but these young students continue to be great ambassadors for Rotary. Congratulations to Rotary and the New Generations Committee.
