Bulletin for the meeting held at the Ocean Grove Hotel on Tuesday August 3, 2004

From the president, T.A.G Kemp:
  • Centenary Dinner; Date - 19 Feb 05, 7.00 for 7.30. Venue - Barwon South Community Centre. Cost - $48 per head (includes 3 course meal, wine & soft drinks, light entertainment). Attendance is limited to Rotarians & partners; the evening is meant to be fun, no working, no speeches, no fundraising.
  • Club Assembly tonight – the object is to meet to discuss programs and activities, with special emphasis on long-term objectives and strategies.
  • Members are reminded that the meeting starts at 6.30 and the appropriate gathering time is 6 – 6.15pm to avoid being late.

    Induction, David Cornwell. (Introduced by Dennis Saliba): David was born in Sydney and raised in Adelaide, returning to Sydney to begin a career in the Commonwealth Bank and pursue interests in sport – Aussie Rules, Rugby League and the beginning of a 35 year interest in basketball including the St Kilda Police Boys and the Southern Giants. Positioned at Geelong in 1992, David has been involved in coaching womens basketball, as well as committee level or membership to South Barwon Swimming Club, Victorian Swimming Club, Ocean Grove Football Club and Ocean Grove Golf Club. David has been a consultant to Mazda in establishing in Geelong and as an employment consultant, and involved with St Laurence Community Services.

    A brief address was given by John Fox regarding the Council on Legislation (cost 5 mil each three years), the Rotary Foundation (which distributes 100 million per year), the future of Rotary and various articles of legislation that were not passed ie: Extending membership to passive members, spouses etc and the proposed se of the Rotary logo on business material. John pointed out that Rotary established 8,400 clubs and 400,000 members in the first 50 years, and more than 24,000 clubs and 800,000 members in the next 50 years. “As long as men and women of goodwill meet, Rotary will survive” says John.

    Community Service, John Wynn:

  • The first major project will be held on August 28-29. This will be a weed pull behind the Surf Beach around the fire track area. Members of the community, Lions Club, Community Association, Ocean Grove Fire Brigade, Fire Brigade Aux (Catering). This will provide a good opportunity to clean up the foreshore and work together with others. Please make a special effort to attend.
  • Road Clean-up – safety issues are still to be sorted out.
  • Elderly Citizens Christmas Dinner – John Calnin will coordinate the Dinner
  • Christmas Tree lights at Point Lonsdale. Lights will be erected on Nov. 13. Light-up will be on December 4 – while the Great Victorian Bike Ride is in town
  • The Bloodarine Challenge continues so please remember to make a donation.

    Vocational Service, Peter Cullen:

  • Mock Job Interviews will be conducted over the next two weeks.
  • Workplace visits are being planned.
  • The Pride of Workmanship awards will be continued.
  • There will be a dinner at the Gordan Restaurant in November.
  • A Livewire candidate has been selected.
  • The Shine Awards will also be continued.

    Youth Service, David Tyrrell:
    Seimens Science Expo – approx. 10 students and their schools are interested in the expo.
    Letter received from local police regarding funds for bicycles – referred to Board.

    Martin Geerings: Signe Uhlenfeldt will address the club on August 17th. This will be a good night to bring partners (not a designated partners night)

    Membership, Geoff Brentnall: August is Membership Extension Month. We now have 51 members and are on the way to our target of 60. Un-represented classification will be mentioned at coming meetings, along with prospective members. If you know any of the people mentioned, please invite them to Rotary. Examples include: Architect, Dentist, Chiropractor.

    Market, Tony Haines:
    There are now 8 weeks and 5 days to the first market. A working bee will be held at the site on September 18.
    John Webb has again agreed to sponsor the raffle to the tune of $150 per month. Alison George and Cheryl Selkirk will manage the raffle.
    Signs will be placed at the Neighborhood Centre.

    Assistant required for Rod Birrell to distribute and pick p equipment and signs.

    Treasurer, Coral Barker: at 31 June, we have $22,613.25 in both accounts. A copy of the financial report will be on each table at the beginning of each month.

    Notes:
    Partners of Rotarians: A Coffee night will be held on August 12th at Barwon Orange - 7.30pm. All partners of Rotarians welcome. A great opportunity to get to know each other better over, and the best coffee in Barwon Heads.
