Bulletin No. 31

Bulletin for the meeting held at the Ocean Grove Hotel on February 15, 2005

President TAG Kemp welcomed members, visiting Rotarians and guests, including the guest speaker, Snr. Sgt. Tony Hill of the Bellarine Police Station.

The president informed the members of the death of Graham Bath on Monday Feb 14th. Graham was a Paul Harris Fellow, Sapphire Pin recipient, Rotarian for some 40 years, and was instrumental in the establishment of many Probus Clubs in the region. The club will sadly miss him and sympathy is extended to his wife Wilma and family. The funeral service will be held on Friday.

Welcome to Alan Barber, editor and journalist. Alan spoke briefly about his new publication, Ocean Grove Voice, to be launched on March 16.

Welcome also to Pat and Julie Culton, previously members of a Rotary club in Bendigo.

Reports

Trevor McArdle: Unfortunately John Webb can no longer host the annual sports evening. Any suggestions for a new activity welcome.

Guest Speaker, Snr. Sgt. Tony Hill. Sgt Hill showed a brief video about policing in Victoria. The Police Force is many things, as seen in the video, but it is also a business, with a CEO and a budget. Christine Nixon is at the head, with a forward thinking approach to issues. The police have to move with the times and ‘work smarter’. Consequently there are on-board computers being fitted to all police cars, allowing instant exchange of information. The 000 phone number is being used as a contact number rather than just an emergency number and members of the public are encouraged to use it. Training is a critical part of the operations and a significant portion of funds are spent here. Bike patrols are popular policing methods as well as the High and Low Ropes course for young offenders. These programs reduce the revolving door aspect of re-offenders, who make up 60% of all offenders.

Notes from the president:

The Centennial Dinner will be held next Saturday night. There are spare tickets, which will cost the club so please think about coming along to this great evening for Rotary.

Some new members have asked for Rotary shirts. Please register your interest with Tim so that an order can be put together once reasonable numbers are reached.

Peter Molloy has requested Leave of Absence.

Conference application forms available from Dennis at Bendigo Bank.
