Bulletin for the meeting held at the Ocean Grove Hotel on March 22, 2005
Welcome: President TAG Kemp welcomed members and guests including Anne Brown, guest for the first time, Bob Smith on his forth visit to the club, and Neville Wright from Barwon Heads. A warm welcome is extended to these prospective members. Also welcome to Jan Howard, endorsed candidate for Rotary Youth Exchange accompanied by her mother Barbara. Jan will attend the up-coming Youth Exchange meeting at Halls Gap along with Signe.
Unfortunately the guest speaker for the evening has advised that he is unable to attend.
A new Manual of Procedure has been produced by Rotary, which has resulted in the need to update our club’s By-Laws. If you have any suggestions regarding the club’s By-Laws please submit them by the end of this month.
The board has approved funding for nominations to the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) and the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN).
Donations in Kind
The Donations-in-Kind project is part of Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS). RAWCS, like the international Rotary organisation – World Community Service (WCS) is responsible for providing aid to overseas nations suffering from natural disasters, provision of buildings for many needs, hospital equipment, school equipment, clothing, food, sporting equipment, pure water supplies and prevention of Malaria in local communities.
It provides aid for third world nations through the work of Project Volunteers in the construction of Hospitals, Schools, Accommodation, Administration buildings and Churches in some situations. Indigenous people are trained in the construction and maintenance of these buildings.
Donations in Kind (DIK) provide materials and equipment for Hospitals, Dental surgeries, Schools, sports, libraries and many other areas of community needs.
Rotarians have access to items which have no further use in Australia but can serve a need in the developing world. D. I. K. will coordinate the dispatch and delivery of these items.
Alan Joyce has been collecting goods for D.I.K Geelong for some years. President TAG has renewed the call for donations, particularly in light of the Tsunami Relief Appeal and encourages members to assist with the collection and sorting of goods at the North Geelong Distribution Centre. D.I.K in Geelong is coordinating the distribution of appropriate materials to areas in need of this support.
Also, Rotary Club of Geelong West is collecting old spectacles as part of the Donations-in-Kind project. If you have any unwanted spectacles please bring them to the next meeting.
Reports
Youth Service, David Tyrrell – Last Sunday we met with the Swedish host family of Jack Madin. This was a very enjoyable meeting, although we were wondering what Jack was up to while his host family was in Australia! Kack is enjoying his time is Sweden, where it was minus 13 degrees yesterday.
Community Service, John Wynn – Well done to all members who participated in Red Cross Calling. As Tony Haines is retiring from the role of Bowls Scan coordinator a new volunteer is required. Bob Jordan indicated that he will take up the role. The roster is full and was read out for the Seafood Fest on Good Friday.
