Bulletin Number 47

Bulletin for the meeting of the Club held on June 14, 2005
Programme: Guest speaker – Mr. Michael O’Brien, CEO G Force, Geelong.

President TAG Kemp

President TAG Kemp welcomed members and guests. A warm welcome was extended to Matt Gerber, Rotary Youth Exchange Student from 1997/98 who has returned from Le Grande, Oregon, USA to visit the club.

Welcome also to Michael O’Brien from G Force.

Congratulations to Tony Haines on reaching 12 years in Rotary.

Organ Donors – there are new forms out for Organ Donors so you will be required to fill out a new form even if you have already registered.

From the floor:

Geoff Chandler, Memorial Garden Project – Geoff has written to the City of Greater Geelong regarding the planned memorial garden at the lookout. Considering that the City has allowed plaques on the Bellarine Rail Tail, it is suggested that they might see merit in our proposal as well.

John Wynn, Community Service – There will be a working bee on Sunday morning at 9.00am to plant 100 trees at Smith’s Beach (end of Hodgson Street). Bring any equipment such as crowbars, picks etc. John will have a Job Safety Analysis Sheet (JSA) for members to sign. Please ensure that you sign on and off this document.

The Grubb Road walking track scope analysis will be done over the coming week and John will report to the club on the requirements for that job soon.

Insurance cover for Rotary Clubs is an issue at the moment with some insurers limiting the age to 95!

PE Helen Trigg – Members are reminded that the changeover dinner will be held at the Barwon Heads Golf Club on July 5th. This is a night for all members and partners, so you will be booked in as such unless you advise otherwise. There will be a two-course meal for $25 (less $5) subsidised by the club. The venue is excellent and there will be a number of invited guests who will be seated amongst the members. Please make our guests welcome.

Matt Gerber is with us tonight, and will speak to the club on June. Note: This will be a good night to bring your partners.

G-Force Target 100 Program

G Force Recruitment, in collaboration with the Geelong Manufacturing Council, and the City of Greater Geelong, is attempting to add 100 New Apprentices to the Geelong Region throughout 2005.

The New Apprenticeships can be taken either through G Force’s Apprentices and Trainees department,or can be directly employed by an employer.

G Force’s General Manager Eric Black believes this is a fantastic way for local employers to encourage new skill development within Geelong’s industry. ’By employing a New Apprentice, the employer is not only giving a young person a chance to enter the workforce, they are increasing the skill base within their industry’.

The need for Geelong industry to develop its skill base has been highlighted within the ’Sustainable Opportunities for Geelong Manufacturing Sector Project Action Plan’.

Also, a recent study by the City of Greater Geelong indicated a negative growth trend in the employment of New Apprentices in the local manufacturing sector.

This trend has developed over the past five years and points to the looming of a serious skills shortage over the next five years.

The Geelong manufacturing Council is encouraging local businesses to address this problem by empoying an additional New Apprentice. For more information, call 1800 GFORCE (1800 436723) and a representative from G Force’s Apprenticeships & Traineeships will be available to speak to your organisation about Apprenticeships and Traineeships in general and in particular how your company can become involved in the Target 100 Program.
