Bulletin No. 19

BULLETIN of the ROTARY CLUB of OCEAN GROVE INC.

Notice for the meeting at the Ocean Grove Hotel on 15th November – 6.00 for 6.30.

PP and ADG Tim Kemp will speak about the Rotary Foundation, [November is Rotary Foundation month]. Margaret Campbell, chairperson, Richard Grimmett will be assistant cashier and thanker, and Steve Gubbins assistant Sergeant and greeter.

Whilst on the subject of duties, both for the regular meetings and the market, it has to be reported that some of our members are very slack in reporting for duty, seeking replacements or lodging apologies.
Repeatedly, rostered Rotarians are letting the club down by not turning up for duty as rostered and not arranging a replacement.
This poses a recurring problem for the reliable people like Geoff Ford, who is then left to handle an essential job on his own.
My job as bulletin editor is to print the roster up to two weeks in advance, and I recognise the inescapable fact that there are still members who don’t read the bulletin. However, if you are one of the recalcitrants and let your fellow members down, there has to be a solution.
In future, if you don’t attend as rostered and have not arranged a replacement, you will be given the same duties again next week. If this appears too aggressive by a mere bulletin editor, please complain to the Board.

Meeting on 22nd November

The guest speaker will be Geoff Brough on ‘Ropes’ [your G is as good as M], with Alison George as chairperson, Rod Greer, ass’t cashier and thanker, and Hans Franken ass’t Sergeant and greeter.

Overdue Accolades

After re-reading my report of the ‘Ocean Grove Race Club’ in last weeks bulletin, I believe that I took it all too much for granted.
Our support of partners’ nights in recent years has not been good, but the Cup Night celebration was a real winner and may well be a fore-runner of things to come. I cannot imagine that there were any disappointed members present, thanks to the marvellous organisation by John Calnin,
the professionalism of Trevor McArdle and David Cornwell at the bookies table and the electronic skills of Richard Grimmett which enabled us to view the races in style, [and with instant replays]. The venue, the food and the service were equally good, and a great night was had by all. A BIG THANKS TO ALL THOSE INVOLVED.

Social events coming up

20th December – Mixed night Xmas party at a venue to be advised. 10th January – Mixed night beach party for all the family, [grand-kids and all]. An appropriate beach is being arranged.

Short–Term Youth Exchange

Short-Term exchanges may vary in length from several days to several weeks. They are available to qualified students ages 15-19, though New Generations Exchanges are open to young adults.
Although participants in short-term exchanges generally do not attend school in their host country, they can tailor their exchange to match their interests or to include tours of specific places or regions.
To be continued. This and following items are extracts from an RI publication.

Last Sunday’s Market

Judy Greer reported 76 sites occupied and about 690 cars. Steve Gubbin’s arithmetic was a bit shaky at that level, and he admits to being a bit vague about the precise number.

Unfortunately, there were some rostered members who did not arrive or apologise, which imposes an unnecessary burden on those that did. Judy reminds members on duty to sign in on arrival – a necessary responsibility for insurance purposes.

A truly great meeting – 42/47. I have a ‘gut’ feeling it has something to do with the new chef.

Most of you were there, so if you want to know more, read ‘This week in the Rotary club of Ocean Grove’ next Wednesday.
The elderly cits. dinner is on 6th Dec. Our Xmas ‘do’ is on 20th Dec.
The penultimate WB at the BH bluff walkway is set for 1pm next Sundy 13th. Bring hammer, gloves, hat and mossie repellent.
Marg. Campbell introduced us to the Shelterbox Down Under project for the distressed people of Islamabad, Pakistan, Guatemala and the Hurricane Katrina effected areas of USA. Each Shelterbox can house 10 people and cost A$1200. A project of the RC of Endeavour Hills.
Pity the Rotarian who inevitably has to follow Rod Birrell as Sgt. at Arms. ‘Nuff said?’
Conference registration papers are available from Tim Kemp. Get in quick. 3 -5 Mar, 06.
We have been requested to bring our ‘blue books’ to Rotary next Tuesday to be advised of amendments resulting from changes since publication Sorry, stupid bloody idea. Won’t work! Please Mr. Secretary, give your ‘bulled’ a list of changes and I will include it next week. Who knows, you may even get two copies!!
Getting back to tonight’s meeting, those lovely young kids were aged 12 -13. What poise and confidence they had ! I wonder what they will make of themselves in adulthood ?

A glimpse of the District Conference.

Full registration, at $150 for all three days, Saturday night dinner and Saturday breakfast, is a real bargain. Accomodation is limited, so contact Tim Kemp urgently.

End bit

Two little boys are sitting on the beach examining each other’s navels. “What are they?”.
“ Well, when you’re born, there’s a piece of rope hanging out there, and they cut it off and twist the end around and tape it inside.” “What for?”
“ So you won’t go psssssshhhhhh and go down.”
