What a lovely Hobby
Dr. Spencer M Free was a top-ranking Pennsylvania surgeon in the early 20th century. In 1919, when Du Bois, Penn., a coal-mining and railroad centre, was first mentioned as a possibility for a Rotary Club, Dr Free was immediately interested. The meeting to organise the club was held in the library of his home, and he became a charter member and the club’s first president
One of his hobbies was his “birthday list” – the names of friends all over the world, to whom each year he mailed greetings. In 1935, when the Rotary Club of Du Bois held a dinner on the occasion of his 79th birthday, he was showered with letters and telegrams from friends everywhere. He died in 1935 at the age of 82
But his main hobby was writing poetry an example of which was reproduced in the publication, “ROTARY – Fifty Years of Service”. It is my favourite piece of poetry, and if you recall me penning it previously, I make no apologies.
‘Tis the human touch……….
“Tis the human touch in this world that counts,
The touch of your hand and mine,
Which means far more to the fainting heart
Than shelter and bread and wine.
For shelter is gone when the night is o’er,
And bread lasts only a day,
But the touch of the hand and the sound of the voice
Sing on in the soul alway.”

Someone must have sent Sheeds a copy
In my bulletin no. 13, I was critical of the AFL participants in the Grand Final who didn’t join in the singing of the National Anthem. However, in the Australia v. Ireland international rules match in WA on Friday 21st Oct., they were all clearly singing it, even coach Kevin Sheedy. Power of the press!!!
A Quizz for you
I have decided to introduce a general knowledge quizz into these pages, and its longevity will depend on your support. There will be a prize for the first correct answer, and because the NPCO’s [Non Personal Computer Owners] will be at a disadvantage, I may give them a 48 hour advantage over the EMR’s [E Mail Recipients]. The winner will be announced and prize presented – by the Sgt. At Arms, at the following meeting, and the correct answer will be printed in the next bulletin.
So, the first question is Which country has the longest coastline? EMR’s to respond only by Email, NPCO’s by phone.
RDU magazine for October
Many of us have little time to read it from cover to cover, but there is a very good article on membership, [p35], and the topical question – Statement of Rules – is discussed on p40. Have a look at ‘The six nouns of Rotary’ on p44. There are now 1203 clubs and 34,958 Rotarians in Australia and PNG. My favourite fruit, Mango, is promoted on p23 of rotarianlife
Rotary Publications and merchandise available
I have copies of the current catalogues for Rotary International and Rotary Down Under. The RI catalogue is a very comprehensive list of publications, with 50 pages covering every facit of Rotary. Any member may order through me and pay on delivery. Committee chairpeople may obtain their own copy of the catalogue for ready reference. The 20 page catalogue of merchandise is fully illustrated and orders can be placed through me as for RI. Both catalogues are available from me at every meeting.
Previous meeting
Dianne McLennan was a highly qualified and excellent speaker who gave us all an insight into the practical operations of the Equal Opportunity Act 1995, and the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act of 2001, spiced with accounts of some actual cases before the Equal Opportunity Commission of Vic. The quality of her address was matched by the meal, the product of a new chef, and we even had JC as the acting Pres.!!
