Do you know how to describe Rotary to a stranger?

Well, of course you do, and you probably use pretty much the same words every time. And that’s fine

But in the District 9780 Public Relations guide, there are eight phrases, conveying much the same message. Here are the three shortest of those eight.
• Rotary is a global network of community volunteers.
• Rotary works to improve the quality of life for all people.
• Rotary is an international service organization of 1.2 million business and professional men and women who, as volunteers, address needs of their home and international communities.

And how much do you know about the Rotary Foundation?

Probably a fair bit, but this is now the subject of a completely separate committee within our club, and we need to have a comprehensive grasp of Rotary’s predominant service activity. These pages will include a summary of the foundation over the next three editions.

Financial Support

In 2003/04, the Rotary Foundation received contributions totalling Aus$143m and spent more than Aus$117m in support of humanitarian and educational programs implemented by clubs and districts. Contributions from Rotarians go into one of three main funds:
• Annual Programs Fund, which provides grants and awards through Foundation programs.
• Permanent Fund, an endowment from which only a portion of the earnings are spent in support of Foundation programs, ensuring the long-term viability of the Foundation.
• Polio Plus Fund, which supports Rotary’s dream of a polio-free world.

Every dollar contributed by Rotarians funds the humanitarian, educational and cultural programs and program operations. Clubs and districts apply for and receive Foundation grants to carry out many worthy projects worldwide. In an effort to maintain sufficient funding for these vital programs, the Foundation launched the ‘Every Rotarian, Every Year’ initiative, designed to increase annual giving to $100 per capita or more. [We now have 6 ‘Centurions’]
In bulletin no. 44, I reported that our club now has five centurians. How about a few more? The Rotary Foundation is almost certainly, the only world-wide charity where 100% of your donation goes to the aimed-at recipient! All administrative costs are funded by a three-year investment income arrangement.

More out of the mouths of babes

A dolphin breathes through an asshole on the top of it’s head. [Billy, 8]
My uncle goes out in his boat with pots, and comes back with crabs. [Millie, 6]
I like mermaids. They are beautiful, and I like their shiny tails. How do mermaids get pregnant? [Helen, 6]
I’m not going to write about the sea. My baby brother is always screaming and being sick, my Dad keeps shouting at my Mum and my big sister has just got pregnant, so I can’t think what to write. [Amy, 6]

We weren’t even in the first fifteen!

Australia is nowadays very prominent in the world of Rotary, but in the early days, we were just too far away. After USA in 1905, came Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland, Hawaii, Cuba, Wales, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Argentina, China, India, Panama, Philippines, and Japan, [all in that order] and then Denmark, France, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa and Australia, all in 1921.
I still chuckle about that poor bugger I mentioned in Vol. 24, No. 27, [Wally Drummond], who had been promoting Rotary in Australia for 7 years, but when RC Melbourne became the first club in Oz. on 21/4/1921, the ‘nobs’ of the day considered him too junior in his firm to be made a charter member!

More wicked wisdom

Epitaph A belated advertisement for a line of goods that has been discontinued.
Etiquette Behaving yourself a little better than is absolutely essential.
Evil That which one believes of others.

This Day Tonight

Marion and Bill Walton gave a very well presented and interesting insight into their duties as volunteers at the recent Commonwealth Games, [2 of 15,000]. Marion on security, Bill on navigation, but both on public relations. Bill also talked about his experiences in Barwon Prison, [purely as a tourist]. Thinking back to my reading of “For the term of his natural life”, clearly, Penal servitude is not what it was!].

Stop Press

• For the Change-over night at the Barwon Heads Golf Club on the glorious fourth, you need to have apologies to Hans by noon , Thursday 30th June. If you don’t, and you don’t attend, you will owe the club for two dinners.
• Apologies for our normal meetings are due by noon Monday.
• Geoff Brentnall would appreciate advice if you know of a suitable speaker during the next year.

• End bit

Dave was charged with bestiality by the Snake Gully police. Dad visited his son whilst he was awaiting his court appearance in the cells. “Tell me about it, son”
“Well, Dad, Mabel wasn’t talking to me and I got really, really lonely. And I noticed our pet emu was bending over and I just couldn’t resist it.”
“The pet emu?”, said Dad incredulously. “Wasn’t that a bit difficult?”
“Yeah, for the first 200 metres,” said Dave, “Then we got in step.”
