September is New Generations Month

For the past three years, members of the Interact Club of Cherkasy-Centre have spent every Friday and Sunday reading, drawing, and playing games with the children at the Warm House orphanage in Cherkasy, Ukraine. They were recognized for their dedication in October with the ‘Service for the Sake of Peace’ award.
The Ukrainian Peace Council, along with 10 national and international organizations, created the award to encourage service that promotes peace, charity, social action, and tolerance. Like the country’s Service for Peace contest, this student competition seeks to advance the United Nations’ International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World [2001-10].
Representatives of more than 30 youth groups entered the contest from countries around the world, including Italy, Japan, Poland and Russia. Honored in the Charity toward Children category, the Cherkasy-Centre club was one of only seven groups to receive an award. This October, the winners will spend three days in Kiev, where they will participate in Service for the Sake of Peace programs, classes, and tours of Ukraine’s capital.
Rotary International also recognized the club for its work with the orphanage during last year’s World Interact Week celebrations. The Rotary Club of Cherkasy-Centre is a proud sponsor of the nearly three-year-old Interact club.
“In the Ukraine, Rotary is not well known,” says Serhiy Sayenko, past president of the Cherkasy-Centre Rotary club. “the work of these active teenagers helps to demonstrate Rotary’s goals and principles to our community.”
Because of Interact, “we can share our love and heart with children who need so much,” says Interactor Dasha Vakulenko. “It is great to have such a club in this world.”

Ed.-- “ Just another example of the world-wide activities of this great institution in which we serve.”

Why is it so?
Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
What disease did cured ham actually have?
How is it that we put a man on the moon before we put wheels on luggage?
Why is it that people say they “slept like a baby”, when babies wake up every couple of hours?

The death of the quiz—again!

At least, I had a 200% increase over the previous resurrection, with three Rotarians having a go and all three getting it right. But Rod Greer is the champ, as he e-mailed in at 9.55am on day one, 3hrs 51mins ahead of Tim Kemp and about 10 hours ahead of Georgie Girl. With only 3 starters, the championship cup will not be presented.

Only read this if you are a Past President of this club.

Helen Trigg and Martin Geerings have new dinners badges, at the club’s expense. The red print designation of their year as president is an innovation, timed to coincide with the loss of their old badges, and a gesture by the Board to recognize, in a small way, their contribution to the club.

If any past president wishes to replace their existing badge with the ‘past-president’ style, Foxy has been delegated to do so for anyone interested. It is purely voluntary, but the club will bear the cost. Actually, Patricks stuffed up the first order as we wanted, e.g., 2004/05, not 2004-2005 as printed, but we will insist on correct printing next time. Lend your existing badge to Foxy for one week and he will take a photo-image of it.

Missed Birthdays

Somehow, your editor missed recording Ken Wyatt’s birthday on 21st September, and David Cornwell’s on 23rd September. Sincere apologies, fellas!!

I bet you are all pleased that you are already a fair dinkum Aussie!!

It is all very easy to be cynical about Australia’s immigration policy, but after listening to guest speaker Bob McDonald’s address last night, one wonders how any applicant ever gets in. If an applicant can wade through 50 pages of bureaucratic nonsense, [Oops, I almost said ‘bullshit’] pay a minimum of $3860 and pass a language test which Bob concedes 90% of us would fail, then, they deserve to get in.

Bob started his UK career in immigration procedures in 1962, commenced several overseas postings in 1968, and served in such diverse locales as Malta and Helsinki before migrating to here. A developing friendship with Hubert Opperman introduced him to Australia, and he came to reflect that the Immigration Act of 1901 was just the forerunner of a very strict entry policy.

He sees Indonesia as a barrier to our determination to keep illegal immigrants out of this country., but how many of us could pass a test of three consecutive essays, each of 500 words, in just one hour? Probably, a Chinese student!!
