RI President’s Message. How Rotarians can lead the way

‘Rotary was founded as a fellowship of people who shared certain qualities: strong ethical convictions, generosity of spirit, and a willingness to be the first to do what needs to be done. Around the world, for generations, Rotarians have been leaders in their communities. And today, the world needs Rotary leadership more than ever before.

My theme for this Rotary year, Lead the Way, reflects my belief that Rotarians have a responsibility to bring about a better future by living according to these long-held Rotary values. True leaders lead by example, and we must all be unfailing examples of Rotary ideals in our professions, our clubs, and our daily lives. Showing caring and consideration, respecting others and combining practical knowledge with compassion: this is how we will strengthen Rotary and better assist those we serve.

Our communities today need real role models, not distant celebrities; practical minds, not idealistic dreamers. And as we all know, our responsibilities as Rotarians go far beyond our weekly meetings; we are all responsible for making our communities – and our world – better places. There can be no boundary between Rotary and the rest of our lives. Everything we do, we must do as Rotarians, always striving to live up to the high standards that being a Rotarian requires.

This year, I ask you all to Lead the Way as true Rotarians – with solid integrity, steady effort, and practical good sense. Together, we can help create a better future through the simple vales of Rotary.’

Wicked Wisdom

Glutton A person who escapes the evils of moderation by committing dyspepsia.
Good Breeding Concealing how much we think of ourselves and how little we think of the other
person.
Gout A physician’s name for the rheumatism of a rich patient
Gourmet A glutton with brains.
China is a sleeping giant. Let her sleep, for when she awakes, the whole world will tremble.

A learned gentleman, whose name escapes me, once said that, but China is now surely awakening and perhaps the world does not yet tremble, but it must surely look on her with awe1

The number of people living below the poverty line in China has reduced dramatically from 300 million in 1978 to less than 80 million today. This is a massive reduction and reflects the 8% to 9% growth rates achieved by China’s economy since the mid 1980’s. However, 80 million poor people, with aspirations to move from rural to urban areas, remains a big challenge for the country and requires a commitment to maintaining the country’s rapid economic growth and urban development. It is estimated that by 2030, 70% of China’s population will be urbanized [currently only 30%], which suggests that the current demand for resources, construction materials and new buildings will continue at a rapid rate.

With Australia’s immense reserves of iron ore and other minerals, what an extraordinary challenge awaits us. We are currently reluctant to export our uranium, but surely, with the world’s reserves of oil fast running out, nuclear power is the energy source of the not-too-distant future, [and an essential feature of any worthwhile desalinization project in our own rapidly ‘drying’ country].

Transplant Games in Full Swing

Our sincere thanks to club members who have volunteered their time to assist with the events throughout the week and the BBQ on the banks of the Barwon next Saturday, 16th.
With 800plus competitors from interstate and overseas covering 16 sporting and 3 recreational events, there are close to 300 volunteers, mainly Rotarians, involved in this project.
Remember that each step taken is a step closer to increasing awareness of the need for increased organ and tissue donation. Every two years, when the games are held in Australia, there has been a significant increase in registrations. May this year be a record!
Even if you are not a volunteer official, please try to attend as many events as you can. Attendance is free and your support will show that you care. Anyone wishing for an events and venue guide should phone 5261 3310.
Submitted by Mary Elliott, Organ Donor Awareness Sub-committee, supporting Transplant Aust.

Local volunteers are reminded to register and receive accreditation and t-shirt at the Myers St. Mercure Hotel this Thursday, 1pm-6pm, or Friday, 9am-6pm.

The Brown and Butteriss Show

Most of you thought Brownie was an accountant. He is, but he’s also a valuer – only millionaires should apply. Many of us lost track of the noughts, but he obviously knows his stuff.
Helen Butteriss is a lass who truly came up through the ranks, from receptioniste to principal of the largest accounting practice in the Geelong district in a very short space of time, [and still found time to raise two children]. Helen clearly demonstrated the importance of setting clear goals through life’s tangle of complicated business laws and procedures, and stressed the importance of asset development, sound business strategies and succession planning.
Ed. Note: On a purely flippant note, if all else fails, you can always reword your will- “Being of sound mind, I spent it all while I was alive!”
Colin and Helen deserve our thanks for an excellent, professional presentation.
