A few little questions, [for which I am grateful to Canadian Keith Nixon] which I pose to you all.

• Can you cry under water?
• How important does a person have to be before they are considered to have been assassinated instead of just murdered?
• Why do you have to “put your two cents in”……..but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts?” Where’s that extra penny going to?
• Once you’re in heaven, do you have to keep wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

A reminder about the Transplant Games in Geelong, 16-23 September.

If you are a volunteer, and have not been contacted with your itinerary, and have not at least received the letter from Transplant Australia dated 10th August, you should urgently phone 52613310 or 0429613310

Additionally, the following is an extract from an e-mail sent by the organizers to Marion Walton on 15th Aug.
‘We are extremely grateful to the R/C of Ocean Grove and to your committee rep. Peter Hawthorne for valued support. Upon your suggestion Marion, I take the opportunity of having you make the following announcement:
It would be very much appreciated if anyone could find the time to assist with the following:
• Sunday 17th. Two men with a trailer to collect 200 chairs [braced in rows and not too heavy!] from the Flinders Peak Secondary College, Hendy Rd. Corio, at 10.00 am and deliver to the Norlane Pool – then to collect them on Wed. 20th and return to the school.
• Monday 18th to Friday 22nd. Attend the internet room at Gordon TAFE, 9.00 am to 1.00 pm, or 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm, so that competitors and volunteers have computer access throughout the games.
• Tuesday 19th. Norlane Swimming Pool 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm – 3 time-keepers and two reserves requiredand also to help at the Lions BBQ 5.00 to 6.00, when swimming resumes. C OVER
• Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd. 15 to 20 people required to assist with setting up and decorating for the Gala Dinner.

It is clearly recognized that these duties may be a bit inconvenient for our members, but if you can help, it might be best to contact Marion on 5255 2546 or 0427 360 263 to confirm that the duties remain unfulfilled

More wicked wisdom

Gambling The sure way of getting nothing for something
Gentility What is left over from rich ancestors after the money is gone.
Gentleman One who never strikes a woman without provocation.
German A language that was developed solely to afford the speaker the opportunity to spit at
strangers under the guise of polite conversation.

It may have been amazing. But then, me and Gus, we don’t get amazed much any more.

With about 35 guest speakers every year, all Rotary clubs have to put up with a bit of commercialization, and tonight, we got it. Digital sound recordings for children was a subject which proved the point that our programs need to be well balanced. Thanker Helen Trigg suggested that Brian Hamilton’s wife Rosemary might be a future guest speaker on her vocational ‘therapeutic hypnosis’, and demonstrate how our lot could be kept quiet during speaker-time. Fat chance!!

Bits ‘n Pieces

• If you do not submit apologies in advance of absence, PP Hans will take such action as will cause you the utmost damned astonishment.
• There is an open day at the Neighborhood Centre next Saturday morning, so pop in!
• I always leave about one third of the bulletin to top up with topical stuff from the meeting. Tonight, I am bereft, so here’s the dreaded quiz.

1 Which lost Inca city was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911?
2 Which country was ruled by Ivan the Terrible?
3 Who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic?
4 Who replaced Gray Davis as governor of California in November 2003?
5 Which Norwegian adventurer sailed the Pacific on a balsawood raft?
6 What was the name of the short arrow shot from a crossbow?
7 Which Scottish leader defeated the English at Bannockburn in 1314?
8 In the first world war, what was ‘No Man’s Land’?
9 Which San Fransisco bridge was completed in 1937 and spans 1280 metres?
10 Which Italian Renaissance artist had the surname Buonarroti?

A handsome prize for the neatest correct entry. E.mail recipients have a 24 hour handicap. Overseas subscribers are urged to compete.

End bit

A Tasmanian discovered a flock of sheep on the roadside outside Launceston and stopped for a chat with the drover. “Where are you from, mate?”.
“Up Coonabarabran way”, drawled the drover.
“Jeesus, how did you get your flock across Bass Strait?”
“Aw, I didn’t come that way”
The editor will explain that to the Canadians when they get here.
