To all those born between 1930 and 1980. [continued from last week]
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have playstations, Nintendo’s, no video games, no Foxtel or other pay-TV devices; in fact, probably no TV of any description. No surround-sound or CD’s, no mobile phones, no PC’s or internet.
But, we had friends, and we went outside and found them. To be continued.

“I am……….one of you”
On a Tuesday in October, 1951, the Rotary Club of Colmar, France, gathered for its regular meeting in the Restaurant Central. There was an overflow attendance that day, for the club was to entertain as its guest an old friend and neighbor from the nearby village of Gunsbach. Many of his contemporaries were already referring to him as the ‘greatest man of the century’.
He had achieved world fame not only as a clergyman, author, physician, musician, and philosopher- but also as a great humanitarian and Nobel prize winner. His name was Dr. Albert Schweitzer, and he had come this day to receive an honorary membership from the Rotary Club of Colmar.
At the same time, the club presented Dr.Schweitzer with a generous cheque, which came as a complete surprise. “It is to be used”, the president stated, “for the humanitarian project at Lambarene in the heart of French Equatorial Africa”.
Dr Schweitzer’s response to the presentation was in part as follows:
“I am happy to be with you today and to accept the honour you have given me. I feel that I am in a sympathetic group. I feel that I am among men who sincerely desire to give our civilization more spirituality, a deepening of thought and of human ideals, and a will to save the world from ruin. I am, therefore, one of you, and I believe in your great and splendid goal.”
[Dr Schweitzer, 1875-1965, has been described as probably the noblest figure of the 20th century].

A first for this club!
At next weeks meeting, during the official visit of our District Governor, no less than four new members will be inducted. New Rotarians Suzy Mann, Ben Israel and Dennis Sanders, and a transferee from Ballarat, Ken Fleay. I am confident to say that this is the greatest number to be inducted into our club since Charter Night. It also increases our existing membership by 11%, which is no mean feat. Please give these new members a warm welcome by turning up in force, with your partners. It is 6.30 for 7.00, and your attendance on this official partners night is assumed. Otherwise, you need to de-register with HANS. ********************************
It was, I think you will all agree, a FEEL GOOD night.
Excellently chaired by Tony Haines, the Graham Bath Junior Community Awards was a great success. Wilma Bath presented the framed certificates to Stephanie Todd, Bianca Myers, Jordan Stewart, Taran Dewar, and. Mitchell Hudson. PP Henry Hudson and Isobel were present to congratulate their grandson, and 15 parents and siblings were also present. ADG Alan Ollis represented the DG.
Rotarians come and go, but Graham Bath was special. In his 36 years in Rotary, Graham formed about 25 Probus Clubs. Surely a world record.
These awards, for year six students, run annually from April to October and embrace five social experiences- Community commemoration, a community meeting, experience of a different culture, exploring a different religion and investigating an Arts activity. How would you have coped at age 11 or 12 ? At least, we usually rowdy lot listened attentively to their [probably], first go at public speaking.

News in brief
• Our November market is on Sunday 5th. A revised roster will be printed next week.
• Next Friday at 7.00, the OG Neighborhood Centre is staging a ‘DO’ at the chicken shop in the Terrace. If, like me, you paid $10 to JC [the enforcer] for the privilege of attending this austere function, turn up , even if only to find out if you gain admission, ‘cos, like me, you probably didn’t get the promised ticket!! Booze and tucker is assured, [so the enforcer says!]
• Next Tuesday’s meeting is a fair dinkum partner’s night. The Melbourne Cup night isn’t, but bring her anyway. Peter Hawthorne wants your sold raffle tickets- and the money, by next Tuesday. You can pop them in his mail box at 129 The Terrace if you like.
• We congratulate Peter Cullen on his being elected a life member of the Ocean Grove Football Club. [He was too bloody old to continue playing, anyway!]
• Tony Haines seeks your views on the future of student Exchange in our club. This is a very serious question, and it requires us to respond, after consultation with your partner.
• The Queenscliffe Rotary Club now meets at the Lonsdale Golf Club. 7.30 for 8.00, on Monday evenings as before, but the third Monday is a dinner meeting. The others are supper only. Henry has been in Canada for the last month, so he doesn’t know much about the timing of the dinner meeting, but if you go, please tell your bulletin editor about it.
