Notice for the meeting in the garden at the home of Alison George, 13th Feb, 6.30 for 7.00.
This is the evening of the official visit of the delegation from the Rotary club of Southampton, Ontario, Canada, lead by President-Elect Keith Nixon. Southampton is located on the eastern shores of Lake Huron, at 44o 29’ Nth. Latitude. That point Sth. Latitude would put you very much further south than Tasmania, and at about the area of Timaru on the south island of New Zealand. Current conditions in Southampton are ice and snow, well below freezing.
[This is not a rostered partners’ night, but partners will be welcome. This means that if you intend to bring your partner, you need to register with Hans. If you are not coming, you need to apologise to Hans. However, partners of hosts are particularly asked to attend. I bet you are all very confused about all that. I know I am. Unfortunately, as much as we would like to have a full attendance, partners included, there is a ‘space’ limitation.]
All members and partners are asked to wear their badges to help our visitors.
Speakers Southampton Rotarians Subject “Hail Fellows, well met” Chairman John Fox
Assistant Cashier & Thanker Tony Haines Greeter & Assistant Sergeant Peter Hawthorne
Anniversaries Wal & Val Kelly

RI President’s message ‘Good planning is vital for successful service projects’
We Rotarians are a practical lot. We are not ones to stand idly by when our help is needed. Nor do we begin a job without the tools to finish it. We do not sit at home and wish for a better world. Instead, we work to achieve it.
In choosing our projects, the first important step is planning. Before any work is begun, we must assess the needs and our ability to meet them; we must ensure that we have everything that we need to bring the project to its conclusion. And we must be sure that we are approaching each need in the most efficient, most effective way. Communicating with the people whom we are trying to help is absolutely vital here, as I have seen over and over in my travels.
The best projects are those in which the Rotarians involved have thoroughly researched just what needs to be done, how, and why – and have kept everyone involved at every step. This goes beyond involvement in the planning process. Successful projects transfer the ‘ownership’ of the project to the beneficiaries, for this ensures that the benefits continue into the future. In brief: Plan well, ensure that you are meeting the real need [and not the perception of the need], and give ownership to those who will benefit.
Deciding whom to help is never easy. When we make that decision, we must look not only at the needs surrounding us but at ourselves – what we have to give and who can benefit the most from it.
W.B. [Bill] Boyd.

Either way, it hurts
A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice-cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully up onto a stool. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked kindly: “Crushed nuts?”.
“No,” he replied, “Arthritis.”

This day tonight {back inside at the hotel, not too rowdy, but we still needed two microphones!}
• Visitors included Tim Ballan from Werribee RC, [not Tim Werribee from Ballan as I reported recently], and Past President Vic Harnath, of RC Charlton, who will shortly join our club.
• Suzy Mann and Ben Israel holidayed in the Sunraysia district recently, and announced their engagement. They are to be married on 30th November this year, [a Friday], and it has been suggested that we could attend ‘en masse’. A good idea for an official visit, but we might need a good PA system!! Weddings in Rotary are not that common. Watch this space.
• Organ Donation week was announced by Peter Hawthorne, 18 -25 Feb. We will be asked to participate, but in what capacity? I urge you to keep watching this space.
• Red Cross calling is on again in March. We sounded unenthusiastic, as always, but will, undoubtedly, succumb! It’s the Rotarian in us that persuades us to do it.
• The guy that got us to clean up his front yard now wants us to clean up his back yard. We were even more unenthusiastic about that one, but more research is to be conducted. [ref. Marion Walton].
• Tony Haines reported on Rylah week, 18 – 25 April. We need 18 – 25 y.o. bright, articulate, energetic young males or females with initiative. Nominations to Tony.
• PP John Calnin reminded us of the need for 23 of us to be marshals for $25 each at the 80 km. womens cycling event around the Bellarine on 1st March. [see bully 25/28]
• Foxy gave a brief report on the Canadian visitors due at Alison’s on 13th Feb. Register with AG
