Our adventures with the Canadians – part 2.
Our visit to Sovereign Hill at Ballarat last Wednesday started with a photo-shoot at the old time studio, where we all donned period costumes. We all got copies, and no doubt, you will all get a chance to identify the group. A good looking mob, with a couple of sexy sheilas in the front. A tour of the mine, where we didn’t find any gold, a wander up the main street, lunch at the pub, and a tour of the Gold Museum. Sovereign Hill was packed, and an excellent tourist attraction.
Lake Wendouree wasn’t and neither were the begonias, but category six water restrictions may have been the cause.
The highlight of the visit by our Canadian friends was the two-day trip to Port Campbell and back. Half of the explorers even went on to Warrnambool and Port Fairy before returning home. The four carloads met at the Anglesea Golf Club, where we saw, at close range, scores of kangaroos. Then on to Kennett River and about six koalas, one at a range of just three or four metres. Lunch at Apollo Bay.
Maits Rest on the drive through the Otways was a magic experience, then the Twelve Apostles, serviced by a large carpark and a tunnel under the road for the walkers, and three helicopters for the rich people. No wonder there was such a big crowd: the Twelve Apostles, [we counted only eight], are spectacular. Loch Ard Gorge was the final port of call before a typical Aussie pub dinner, but we then drove on to the ‘London Bridge’ for the penguin parade and a beautiful sunset before bedding down at the Port Campbell Motor Inn. Margaret, the Rotary- supporting proprietor, gave us 8 rooms for $99 per room.
Half the entourage came home via the Otway Fly and Allan McKenzie’s dahlias. It was a great trip and a real ’hit’ with the Canadians.

This Day Tonight
• Visiting Rotarians included President Elect Keith Nixon of the RC of Southampton, Ontario, Canada, and his wife Judy, President Elect Sue O’Brien of the RC of Coburg, and Past President Vic Harnath, formerly of Charlton but soon-to-be RC of Ocean Grove.
• Our Public Access Defibrillator program is to be featured at the Warrnambool conference next week, and Wal Kelly seeks some assistant presenters at our stand. For those who are going, how about you offer your services?
• Pres. Richard Grimmett and Pres. Elect Alison George are our voting delegates at the Friday afternoon session..
• As you will see from the roster above, we need more volunteers for Wednesday 12 to 2, Thursday 2 to 4, in relation to the Organ Donor program.
• Peter Hawthorne is hoping to organize the ‘Farm Stay’ program, and anyone with ideas should speak to Peter.
• The winners in the car raffle came from such diverse places as Jeparit, Wittington and Ross Creek. It is reliably reported that Geoff Ford’s mob sold more tickets than any other team in the district.
• Tony Haines reported that the ever popular RYPEN weekend is set down for the period of Friday 30th March to Monday 2nd April at Southend, near Millicent S.A. A volunteer driver is required.
• Chairman Tim Kemp advised a donations-in-kind pick-up on Monday, 26th Feb, [next Monday, PM]. Specifically household goods excl. furniture, crockery, cutlery, books, [particularly educational material], and a set of encyclopedias would be a treasure.
Tonight’s Speakers
** Student Katherine Sutherland and teacher Jan Strauch of the Geelong Christian College presented a comprehensive report on the State and National Science and Engineering Challenge in which three Geelong secondary colleges performed with great distinction. Christian College team came first in the Geelong regional final, second in the State and then sixth in the national titles.
This was a Rotary sponsored event for which Katherine and Jan expressed their grateful thanks. The teams crowning achievement was the construction of a model bridge. A very slick and convincing presentation.
** Keith Nixon, on his fourth visit to our club, shared Chairman Tim Kemp’s enthusiasm for another joint project, the first one, in Fiji, having proved to be a great success. This one may be a water filtering project.
But the main thrust of Keith’s address to the club was his warm thanks to the local hosts who had shown such hospitality to the eight visiting Canadians, and his wish that Ocean Grovers may visit Southampton in 2008. An excellent promotional DVD illustrated the charm and beauty of his home district.
The Southampton Rotary club was chartered in 1938 and meets in the local Scout Hall, a building actually erected by the Club. They have many ongoing projects, including schools, hospitals, foster parents programs, and many others. **********************
